What to be for world book day

Your little one is sure to have their own ideas about what they want to go as for World Book Day if they're allowed to dress up for school. Every kid has their favourite book and literary character (Harry Potter, ahem!) But there are lots of different ideas that can make your life a little easier as a parent, so be sure to think outside the box for easy outfit ideas.

For example, animals often feature in storybooks, and it's pretty easy to find costumes for them. With a little customisation you can turn a pair of rabbit ears and some face paint into Peter Rabbit, with a blue jacket, for example. Characters with recognisable clothes like Alice in Wonderland or characters from fairytales like Red Riding Hood can also be easy to put outfits together using clothes from your child's wardrobe and a fewn added tell-tale accessories. Alternatively, costumes can be made on a budget, like making BFG ears out of cardboard.

What is the best costume for World Book Day?

We think the best costume for World Book Day is one your child will feel comfortable and confident in. The main priority is for them to have fun with their friends and feel good. If you can find a costume they'll love on a budget, even better – especially if it's not necessarily going to be suitable to use again the following year or on any other occasion. Unique costumes will always get lots of attention, of course, but try not to create anything too complicated – remember your little one has to wear it all day long! And keep in mind that any accessories, if they're not attached, may get lost.

Can you wear normal clothes for World Book Day?

Costumes are usually optional on World Book Day. Your school may have their own policies about whether your child can wear their own clothes on the day or if they have to wear school uniform if they're not in fancy dress. There are many costumes that can also be worn with your child's own clothes underneath or as part of the costume, so make sure you have something in their wardrobe that'll work well.

Do I need to buy a costume?

If you've left it too late and you're wondering what to wear on World Book Day if you don't have a costume, or if you are quite crafty or know your child isn't a big fan of dressing up outfits, there are plenty of children's world book day ideas you can create using things you already have in the home. Here are some last minute world book day costumes you won't have to buy from the shop...

Where's Wally — All you need for this look is a pair of unwanted glasses, a red and white striped top, a bobble hat (ideally in white) and a pair of blue trousers or jeans.

Kids could even wear a blue or denim skirt if you have white and red stripped tights.

Chimney Sweep — Find some dull clothes from the small bag that you no longer want and start distressing them by making them look out of shape, ripped and dirty.

Brown, grey and black clothes work best for chimney sweep costumes and you could look like an extra from Oliver Twist or Mary Poppins.

Use spots of black or brown powder make-up on the face to create the soot effect and add a baker boy hat to complete the look. You could even find a prop that resembles a sweep.

Mildred Hubble — Got a witches hat somewhere that you often pull out for Halloween? Use it to recreate the look of Mildred Hubble from the popular book series, The Worst Witch. Find a grey school pinafore, black tights, white school shirt, stripy tie and pull over a DIY black cape and your little one will look fit to attend Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches in no time.

Mr Bump — We've all got bandages from the first aid box in the house! Recreate the look of the iconic Mr Bump from the Mr Men series by dressing up your child in a blue outfit before wrapping up their head and midriff with bandages.
