How many school uniforms should you buy?

Before buying school uniform, it's best to check what your schools requirements are. For instance, some schools will allow black trainers as apart of their uniform policy, however others might only allow smart black shoes.

The main items you're likely to need as part of your child's back to school uniform are: the correct coloured polo shirts and jumper, easy-to-fasten trousers or shorts, a dress or skirts, and shoes that your child can fasten themselves.

In terms of how many items you need, Matthew Easter, Group CEO of Trutex and Chair of The Schoolwear Association explains "For items that are worn next to the skin, one to wear, one to wash and one in the drawer is a good rule of thumb. This approach helps avoid midweek panics - uniform washing every night is not only costly but tiring.  For outer garments such as blazers only one is needed as this can be washed less frequently."

Where's the best place to buy school uniform?

Buying school uniform can be an expensive purchase so it pays to get it right. Choosing good quality items that will stand up to the rough and tumble of the school playground and the messy play of primary school is important, and Matthew Easter recommends looking out for the following labels:

• ‘Permanent pleats’ means you won’t have to iron them into place every time after a wash

• ‘Stitched down pleats’ means that the pleats have been sewn for a portion of the length, making them more secure and comfortable to wear.

• ‘Crease resistant fabric’ means the fabric fibres are less likely to get or hold creases.

• Garments labelled ‘stain resistant’ or ‘water resistant’ will still get stained or wet but it’s harder for the dirt, rain or other substance to get into the fibres so easier to get any stains out on washing.

• ‘Easy-iron fabric’ can be ironed at a lower temperature

• ‘Non-iron fabric’ means you can wash and hang to dry without the need for ironing.

As well as choosing materials and styles that will last, getting it at the right price is important. John Lewis has recently announced it's freezing prices on school uniform so you can get new school uniform at 2021 prices, while its ANYDAY range offers good quality cheap school uniforms.

M&S has done the same as John Lewis, offering 2021 prices on its back-to-school products to support families with budget constraints. It's also developed energy-saving and crease-resistant clothing technologies to simplify morning routines and save time. They have also introduced Stay New technology that keeps shirts pristine white even after a couple of washes.

Many shops offer 20% off discounts on school uniforms at certain points throughout the year - keep an eye out for those - and don't forget to check out the supermarkets for cheaper school uniform.

Donating School Uniform

With many families struggling with the cost of living at the moment, buying school uniform can be a challenge. Wacky Warehouse and B&M have launched an initiative that allows parents to bring their old school uniform along to one of the soft play centres which will then be donated to a local charity, and charity shops are also a great place to either donate or buy school uniform.
