We all love to get cosy during the winter, especially at Christmas in our comfy matching Christmas pyjamas, and there is nothing better than snuggling down as a family to watch your favourite Christmas musical. There is something about a Christmas film or show with catchy songs that just warms and brightens us all, even when it is cold outside. It is the perfect way to kickstart the festive season or entertain the little ones during the school holidays.

If you fancy staying warm inside why not choose to watch a classic Christmas musical like White Christmas, or perhaps a themed Christmas musical such as The Nightmare before Christmas, which could work on those spooky Halloween movie nights too. Children's musicals are also lovely for a family movie night, or to take your little one to a baby-friendly cinema.

If you want to venture out into the (hopefully) festive weather then why not book tickets for a Christmas musical live on stage. There are so many to choose from all over the UK, including West End shows, touring productions and local theatre. There are Christmas shows for families all throughout the festive period and tickets are available right now.

Whatever you decide to do, whether you rewatch Christmas classics along with yummy treats like hot chocolate snowmen, or try something new, we have rounded up our favourite Christmas musicals that we will be enjoying over the holidays, so you can enjoy them too.

Adapted from Dr. Seuss' famous 1957 book, The Grinch who Stole Christmas, we love this upbeat musical which is a live action TV adaptation of the Broadway musical. Starring Matthew Morrison, kids will love seeing this well known character sing and dance through Christmas in Whoville. This can be streamed on Apple TV+. There are lots of versions of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas ranging from the 1966 animated original which includes the song, 'you're a mean one, Mr. Grinch', Jim Carrey's 2000 live action version and an animated remake of The Grinch from 2018 starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Nightmare Before ChristmasAmazon
Price: £4.99+ per month (Disney + subscription)

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas might be a little creepy for younger children but it is a great festive musical, despite what the title might suggest. However, it is also ideal for Halloween too with the main character of Jack Skellington being rather ghoulish. He isn't bad though, bored of being scary he tries to spread the joy of Christmas into Halloween Town but it's not as easy as it seems. Rated 9+ this might be one for older siblings to enjoy for a late Christmas movie night with the grown ups. There is even a sing along version on Disney +.

Watch on Netflix

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas JourneyIMDb
Price: £4.99+ per month (Netflix subscription)

www.netflix.com

Starring Forest Whitaker and Hugh Bonneville, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is the magical story of a tired toymaker who finds new hope when his granddaughter arrives. Full of festive joy this film is both gripping and heartwarming, with family at its heart. Rated PG it should be suitable for young children and all the family can snuggle up for a cosy movie night together.

Watch on Amazon, Sky Store, Apple TV and YouTube

White ChristmasAmazon
Price: £3.49+

A Christmas classic, this is perhaps one for the grown ups once the kids are tucked up in bed. That said, it is full of wholesome Christmas cheer and with Bing Crosby's famous rendition of 'White Christmas', it really does complete a family movie night during the holidays. When two army friends team up to become a song and dance act, they try to save a ski resort during a season with a lack of snow. It is sweet and full of musical numbers, plus if it's rainy outside, this is one way to experience a white Christmas.

Plus, what a great introduction to London's famous Globe theatre. The Snowy Day@polkatheatre

Adapted from the book by Ezra Jack Keats, The Snowy Day tells the story of the main character, Peter, waking up to snow covering his New York neighbourhood. We love that Polka Theatre is completely child centred and it is a dedicated children's theatre. The Snowy Day is designed for children age 1- 4 years old and it features music and dance with limited dialogue. With a running time of just 40 minutes this is a great introduction to Christmas musicals and theatre for your little one.

This is a great festive introduction to theatre for little ones. Packed full of songs and dance, plus lots of stories and adventure, this is ideal for children from ages 3 - 6. When Father Christmas can't find his keys, his glasses or his boots, the elves get impatient. The sleigh is loaded. It's nearly time. This is fun for all the family and has a running time of 60 minutes.

HOME Theatre, Manchester 6th December 2024 - 31st December 2024

Miracle on 34th StreetHome Theatre

A heartwarming Christmas film has been transformed into a festive musical on stage and we think this is one for all the family to enjoy. Telling the story of Susan, who must restore the world's belief in Santa, this beautiful story is full of joy. It features songs like, 'It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas' and will really get the whole family in the mood for the festive season.

Are Christmas musicals suitable for all ages?

Before snuggling down to watch a Christmas musical as a family, check the age rating of the movie, ensuring it is suitable for any little ones also watching the film. Also, if you are watching an old favourite you can judge if you think the content is appropriate for young children. Similarly, if you are going to the theatre, check for any age recommendations or restrictions with the theatre before booking your tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Do Christmas musicals have to have catchy songs?

No, not always. Just because they are a musical doesn't mean all the music will be upbeat. That said, normally, there are a couple of numbers that get your toes tapping.

Do musicals have any talking, or just singing?

Some musicals will have characters singing every line, which can be fun, but might make it harder for little ones to follow the story. However, ordinarily there will be some dialogue.

What are the best Christmas musicals?

This depends on many things including who is watching the musical and what you like. Children's musicals might be simpler but sweet, while musicals for an older audience could be more complicated. Most musicals will make you feel good and there are some classics such as White Christmas, Meet me at St. Louis, Muppets Christmas Carol and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas which are popular with most people. No matter your age, there will be a musical for everyone.
