There is always so much happening at Christmas from parties to shopping, wrapping presents, preparing nativity play costumes and of course decorating the house, it can be hard to remember to take time out and relax. That is why Christmas shows for families are so lovely. They give you a reason to sit down and enjoy something together, if just for an hour or two, before the chaos resumes, or you could turn it into a day out for the family.

There are so many different types of Christmas shows for families for you to enjoy, from special toddler theatre shows to something aimed at the whole family, it just depends what you are looking for. Of course, we all love pantomimes (oh yes we do, oh no we don't) because they are guaranteed to give everyone a laugh, a soaking and maybe even a peek of a famous face. But there are also plays which tell Christmas stories ranging from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol for older children, or Julia Donaldson's Stick Man for a younger audience. If your little one loves music and dancing, then they might love to the The Nutcracker, a traditional ballet, sure to put you in the festive mood, as well as Christmas musicals you can either watch at home or in a theatre.

Whether you have babies, toddlers or school aged children there is something for every one to enjoy, and don't worry about your little one making noise or refusing to sit down, theatres expect a bit of noise during family productions. A Christmas show for families is the ideal way to introduce your little one to the joy of theatre, plus spend some time together as well over the festive period. If they really love it, then it might provide inspiration for Christmas gifts with puppet theatre toys, or even the books the show was adapted from.

We have rounded up the best Christmas shows for families throughout the UK, saving you the work of looking which will tick one more 'to do' item off your list.

Top tips for attending a Christmas show for families

Book Early: Christmas shows are popular and can get booked up quickly and so we suggest you book ahead to ensure you can get tickets. Pantomimes, especially those with big celebrity names, can sell out quite quickly so plan the shows you want to attend and get the tickets booked so you can relax and look forward to them.

Check age recommendations: Family shows will still have age recommendations for little ones, and some may restrict children under a certain age if the show is not deemed suitable. Before purchasing your tickets check for any restrictions.

Arrive early: There is nothing worse than rushing with children so ensure you get to the theatre in plenty of time. No doubt before the show your little one might want to go to the bathroom or get some kids' snacks for during the performance so allow time to get organised and comfortable in the theatre before the show begins.

Dress comfortably: Bring extra layers in case the theatre gets chilly, especially if it is a show with ice skating. Also, shows can be long and kids can get fidgety, which is fine, but make sure they are wearing comfortable clothes.

Get a booster seat: Lots of theatres have stacks of booster seats on offer for small children to use throughout the performance. Make sure you grab one of these so your little one can see what is happening on stage.
