If you want to have a go at ice skating, then autumn and winter are the often the perfect time to find a great family ice rink. However, getting on the ice any time of the year promises to be an exciting (and often funny) experience for everyone and it doesn't matter if you slip and slide your way round the edge, or glide gracefully around, it's still a great way to spend time together and makes a great Christmas event for little ones.

As we get close to Christmas then more ice rinks pop up around the country offering wintry skating experiences, sometimes outside, and often in the grounds of beautiful or iconic landmarks such as Brighton's Royal Pavilion, Warwick Castle or the Eden project. You can also find ice skating at Christmas events such as Winter Wonderland and Lapland UK. Booking to go skating at one of these pop up ice rinks is a great excuse to visit places you have never been to, a castle you would like to see, or a city, such as Edinburgh, that you have always wanted to visit, plus it's an excuse to stay in an Air BnB and get some time away.

There are permanent ice rinks throughout the UK which you can visit for a one off session any time of the year and some which also offer skating lessons if you get the taste for it, or if you have been inspired by Disney on Ice. You never know maybe your little one will be the next Jayne Torvill or Christopher Dean. Whether you are a seasoned pro, or you just want some family fun this half term or at Christmas, read on for all the best ice rinks in the UK, including pop up ice rinks and those that are available to use all year round.

With so much choice we have rounded up our choice of the best ice rinks, plus British Ice Skating also has a handy rink finder. All you have to do is choose where you want to go and pack those winter coats to wrap up warm!

Why should you go ice skating in the UK?

Whether you choose to go to a pop up festive ice rink, or want to attend more regularly all year, ice skating is a great way to keep fit and try something new. It is fun for all the family and often the pop up rinks are surrounded by lots of festive entertainment, so even if you have family members who don't want to skate, it can still be a fun day out for all the family.

Is ice skating accessible for all?

It is best to check the website of the ice rink you want to attend, but generally, ice rinks, both pop up and permanent, offer accessible sessions for those with disabilities or for young children. There are often ramps for wheelchair users and skate aids for small children. There might be age or height restrictions for children under 3 or 4, so again always check the information for specific rinks on their website.

What is the largest ice rink in the UK?

There are lots of large ice rinks throughout the UK and Winter Wonderland, in Hyde Park London, boasts the UK's largest outdoor ice rink. However, for year round, indoor skating the largest ice rink is the National Ice Centre in Nottingham. That said, Planet Ice are currently building a new venue in Manchester and that will become the largest ice rink in the UK.

What to wear for ice skating?

Dress up warm, especially if you are skating outside. It is best to wear layers so if you get hot you can remove one without getting chilly. Avoid bulky clothes which could restrict your movement while skating and it is also a good idea to wear winter clothes like hats and gloves as well.

Do you need to bring your own skates?

No. Most ice rinks have skates to hire, although this might be at an additional cost. If you do have your own skates then you should be able to wear them, although some ice rinks will ask to do a suitability check.
