skincare products to use during pregnancy

Now you're pregnant, it's time to ramp up your self-care regime, and that includes skincare products to use during pregnancy. Whether you’re looking to take better care of your skin, or simply wanting to pamper yourself in the time before your little one arrives, you’ll want to know the best skincare products to use during pregnancy.

Unfortunately, it's common for skin to go completely haywire thanks to raging pregnancy hormones. When you have got hyperpigmentation, breakouts and redness to contend with, you can feel like you are never going to have that pregnancy glow that everyone comments on when they know someone is expecting.

Best pregnancy skincare at a glance:

Some mums-to-be experience acne, despite never suffering from it before. Others find their skin suddenly becomes very dry and flaky. Stretch marks are another unavoidable change that many women experience and will likely remain long after pregnancy is over which is why it's worth investing in skincare products to use during pregnancy.

It's important to be aware that there are also a few potent products from your beauty cabinet that are not recommended when you are expecting. Pregnancy can make your skin super sensitive. Some of the products that you have been using for years may suddenly cause your skin to flare up.

"You should avoid benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid for breakouts, as these ingredients are considered unsafe," says skincare expert Joyce Connor. It's also advised to steer clear of retinol during pregnancy due to its vitamin A content. You may want to avoid fragrant potions if you're hypersensitive to strong smells and/or suffering from morning sickness.

Have a look at our guide to the best skincare products to use during pregnancy, including M&B Award Winners, that are safe to use while you're expecting.

Best pregnancy skincare gift set

Mother&Baby/Stephanie Spencer

The Motherhood Kit from Luna Daily is designed to nurture skin through every stage of pregnancy.
This set contains an array of gentle, soothing and hydrating formulas to support you through everything from post-partum soreness to stretchmarks and dry nipples. The brand's kind-to-skin products can be used from tip (and nip...) to toe and are enriched with nourishing ingredients (think aloe vera, vitamin E and coconut oil).
The set comes with a gorgeous (and generously sized) wash bag, which is ideal for packing in hospital bags, and we love the thought that has been put into creating a set that sees mum through from pregnancy to post-birth recovery.
Hub Editor Stephanie Spencer says, "The everywhere wash is lovely to use, I'm much more conscious of what ingredients are in my skincare now that I'm pregnant, and to have something which is specifically for maternity use is very reassuring. I also love the skin support oil, it helps relieve tightness over my bump and it's great that it can be used post-birth as well."
The set also includes a perineal prep oil, a post-birth recovery spray and a nip and lip balm. "The spray is such a compact size, it's going to be great for having in my hospital bag just in case, and I like that the nipple balm is also for lips, it's quite a discreet tube and ideal to have in your handbag.
It's difficult to think of anything that could be changed, the only thing I can think of is that there's quite a few boxes with the products in, perhaps there could be less packaging, but really everything looks great and I think anyone would be thrilled to get this as a mum-to-be gift."

Pros

  • Comes with everything you need to treat your skin during pregnancy and post-birth
  • Included washbag is a great size and good quality

Cons

Best massage oil

Formulated by founder, Jan, a qualified midwife and aromatherapist, all Motherlylove products are blended for safe use during pregnancy. Tums and Boobs massage oil reduces itching on your bump, reduces anxiety, reduces nausea and reduces stretch marks.

Review: "This massage oil is amazing, I used it daily whilst pregnant and found it very luxurious and relaxing to use. I was lucky enough not to have a single stretch mark during or after pregnancy and I have no doubt a large part of that was down to this oil! I know genetics play a part but I have stretch marks in other areas pre pregnancy so pretty sure I would have aquiured more had I not used bumps and boobs! My little boy was 2 months early so I found myself with nearly a full bottle after his birth which I did use for a while as my bump shrunk back. But I would also recommend this oil in another very different way.... I had run out of my usual face cleansing oil, researched online ingredients wise to make sure everything was suitable for facial use and went for it! Since my skin has been the best it's been for months and I can't quite believe it, since having my baby my usual products don't seem to be cutting it, but now my skin is super soft, my pores have shrunk, it's no longer dehydrated and literally glows! I know this is not what it was developed for but wow, it's perhaps something you should think of because it's amazing as a facial cleanser!"

The Motherlylove Stretch Mark and Massage Oil was shortlisted for Best New Mum/Maternity Skincare Product in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards. Check out our full review here.

  • Free from synthetic fragrances and colours

Review: "I am very sensitive to scent and this product smells amazing. It has very refreshing and subtle scent. I started using this product when I was pregnant and looking for a safe and easy care for my face. I just love how easy it is and how effective it is. Even for those first few months where I barely slept, I was able to stick to the skin care."

Best hydrating moisturiser

La Roche Posay's intense moisturiser rehydrates, soothes, and softens your skin with La Roche-Posay Thermal Springwater. Containing no fragrances or parabens, this solution will make your skin feel more smooth than ever.

Review: "At the moment I have really dry skin from my pregnancy and this moisturiser is just what I need to help keep it looking moisturised. None of my other moisturisers were able to stop my skin from becoming dry and flaky within hours but this stuff works. I'm also using it on my bump to try and prevent stretch marks (I know they will come if they are coming but trying everything to stop them) and I can really feel how moisturised my stomach is even hours after applying."

Pros

  • Suitable for very sensitive skin
  • Facial moisturiser for very dry dehydrated skin types
  • Contains Hyaluronic acid

Cons

  • Small tube for the price

Best rosehip oil

Suitable for vegans, and during pregnancy, the Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil is rich in Omegas, with Rosehip Fruit and Seed oil, this will help regenerate your skin without irritation. Known as a 'best-selling skin saviour' it will improve your dull, tired skin and leave it feeling clear and silky smooth.

Review: "I use this oil at the end of my routine, and I find it has made a special place on my bathroom counter. As a final step, it marries together my few other products. Because it's a dry oil, I'm not smearing more and more thick creams on my skin, the rosehip oil sinks in and leaves a comfortable glow on top of everything that makes me feel I've done something right. Over time I've noticed more even texture and tone. When I started my new routine I incorporated a lot of products too soon so I cant say if the oil helped reduce my acne and texture/scarring, but realistically I'd bet that the rosehip oil is on duty for bumps and redness. I feel luxe when applying, my skin is plump, and the light aura of fragrance feels very grounding. This rosehip oil makes my night routine complete. I like to use ~single ingredients at a time so there's no interaction on my skin I'm unaware of, and knowing the sources of this oil has me grabbing for it just to add rosehip berries on my face. It's fun."

Pros

  • Vegan friendly
  • The oil can be used to address a catalogue of complexion complaints without irritation, including dry, flaky patches, blemishes, dull skin tone
  • Fresh and long-lasting

Cons

  • Some people didn't love the smell

Review: "Used this product during my first pregnancy and currently using it in my second. Smells nice, the product is thick and feels luxurious when applying. So far no stretch marks!"

Pros

  • Dermatologist-tested
  • The rich belly butter smooths over the skin
  • Supports the skin's elasticity during nine months of stretching

Cons

  • Some people felt it was on the pricey side for the amount of product you get

Best for acne

Another superstar brand for clean skincare, The Ordinary’s simple and clinically proven formulas make them ideal for pregnancy. While the usual go-to product for acne combat – retinoids – are unsafe during pregnancy, azelaic acid is the perfect substitute. Used locally on any problem areas, azelaic acid will drastically improve acne and rosacea, and will also work by stopping the production of pigment in the skin. If that wasn’t enough, the Ordinary’s formula is also intensely brightening as well as affordable if you’re on a budget.

Review: "I absolutely love this product, made my skin baby smooth from the very first application! It has a really lovely silky texture that makes my skin super soft and buttery- I’m in love! I have problem skin and use it every morning with absolutely no adverse reactions or flare ups. Definitely recommend!"

  • Reduces the look of blemishes
  • A multi-functional support ingredient for all skin types

  • May not be suitable for very sensitive skin

Best for post-birth recovery

MEM spritzMother&Baby/Stephanie Spencer

Chances are you'll be quite sore after childbirth because of stretching, bruising, and swelling, even if you don't have a tear or episiotomy. This midwife developed and mum approved Spritz for Bits contains natural essential oils which work together to help soothe discomfort after childbirth, including lavender for soothing pain relief, tea tree oil for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, and Vitamin E for encouraging skin health and elasticity.

Review: "I can not recommend this product enough. For my last couple of weeks of pregnancy I was in agony with hemorrhoids and tried everything to ease my pain. I was dreading having a natural birth and then becoming even worse. I tried the spray the first time I went to the toilet after giving birth. I had grazed but not torn. I felt very swollen and saw and was dreading the spray stinging but it was instant relief. I felt like it sorted my problem with my hemorrhoids too. I’ve just purchased my 2nd bottle as we all use it in the house now. I even use it on my daughter who’s 4yrs old. It’s so easy to use rather than using a cream. I’ve just had my 3rd child and this is the one thing I’d recommend the most from this pregnancy."

Containing hyaluronic acid - a natural hydrator - this formula will absorb instantly into your skin, becoming your pregnancy skincare saviour. The lack of scent also makes this a great choice for sensitive skin, or those of us who are more sensitive to certain smells during pregnancy. Unlike other gel moisturisers, this one won’t leave your face feeling greasy, and the cool feel of the gel will also refresh your skin and leave it wanting more.

Review: "I have been using it for 2 weeks and I can tell there is a slight difference to my skin- more radiant and no more oily skin on my nose so that's a great advantage, also I think my face seems softer. It has a pleasant smell, it's not too strong even though I'm pregnant and have a very sensitive sense of smell, does not bother me one bit. It's very light, watery kind of texture, giving nice cool touch to my face which I love. I apply this cream as recommended, after deep cleansing, once in the morning after shower and just before bed time. I can tell already there is no occasional spots popping up since I use this product. I definitely recommend it, if it does its job as it does now will stick to it for a long time."

We spoke to Lesley Gilchrist, CEO and founder of My Expert Midwife, to find out more about how your skin can change during pregnancy, and things to consider with your skincare routine.

Pregnancy skincare FAQs

Does your skin change during pregnancy?

Yes, is the very simple answer your skin definitely changes during pregnancy. As you move through Trimesters 1, 2 and 3 you may experience periods of lush, glowing, peachy skin, whilst during others you will have dry, spot-prone or irritable skin – blame it on the hormones! Pregnancy is a time of massive hormonal shift which everyone associates with mood and emotions, but they affect so much more than that, skin included. Skin is the largest organ in (or on) your body and is hugely influenced by our hormonal balance; as a teen and during puberty it can break out in acne, during menstruation you might notice you have small breakouts and your skin becomes oilier, and during your pregnancy you might experience areas of hyperpigmentation, dryness and rashes – all of which are caused in some part by hormones. Your skin is also affected as your pregnancy progresses because it stretches as your bump grows, but you may also notice your skin stretching on your bottom, thighs, breasts and arms, in fact anywhere, as you have increased blood volume and may put on some additional weight. This stretching leads to dry, irritable and sometimes sore skin, and for up to 80% pregnant women stretchmarks, however with care and attention, and the right products you can give your skin the care and attention it need during this intense period of change.

Are there any common skin conditions that can happen because of pregnancy?

There are many weird and wonderful skin conditions that are associated with pregnancy including (but not limited to):
Hyperpigmentation – occurs when an increase in melanin causes patches of darker skin
Melasma – also known as Pregnancy Mask – is very common affecting approximately half of all pregnant women and causes darkening of patches on the face hence the mask appearance
Stretchmarks – also known as striae – these are literal tears to the dermis of the skin caused by rapid stretching and are extremely common affecting up to 80% of pregnant women they might be pink, purple, red, brown or black but will gradually fade to skin colour or silvery.
Acne– can be caused by increased blood flow and oil production which occurs during pregnancy
PUPPP– PUPPP is an itchy rash that sometimes appears during pregnancy. The letters PUPPP stand for Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy and presents as itchy hive-like patches which often start around the abdomen but may spread across the body.
Varicose Veins/ Varicosities/ Haemorrhoids – swelling and sometimes itchiness of veins especially in the legs, the vulva or anus can occur as a result of rapid weight gain adding pressure to the circulatory system although topical relief can be applied for itching, pain and discomfort there is usually no other treatment during pregnancy

What skincare products would you recommend as must-haves for mums-to-be?

Skincare should be tailored to the individual, however, during pregnancy women often find that their usual brands don’t have the same effect anymore, this is likely to be down to hormonal changes, but also to the rapid stretching of the skin during this time. It's worth investing in a specialist pregnancy skincare brand such as My Expert Midwife, that truly understands the impact that pregnancy has on a woman’s skin. Pregnancy skincare should have carefully selected ingredients that work together to solve specific problems be that tears and sutured wounds, stretchmarks, sore nipples, or stressed and achy muscles.

Are there any skincare ingredients to look out for during pregnancy?

Yes, there are products that we would strongly recommend you choose during pregnancy. Your skin may change significantly following conception due to hormones fluctuating and your skin stretching so now is the time to invest in good-quality pregnancy-specific skincare products.
Look for ingredients that are as natural and gentle as possible. Cheap products may be appealing but tend to contain poorer quality ingredients which are mainly synthetic and less likely to be effective.
During pregnancy your skin needs additional hydration, elasticity and soothing so keep an eye out for ingredients such as; Calendula flower extract to soothe, Coconut oil, Vitamin E and Beeswax to hydrate and lock in moisture, Lavender to calm and as an antimicrobial, Arnica as an anti-inflammatory, and Frankincense to ground and soothe your mind.

Are there any skincare ingredients pregnant mums should avoid?

Your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy and added to the fact that your skin absorbs many of the ingredients put onto it you need to be very careful with the products you choose. The recommendation in pregnancy is to avoid:
• Anything derived from Vitamin A such as Retinols which have been linked to birth defects
• Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid, Accutane – often found in spot and acne treatments have been shown to have some risks to the fetus
• Some Essential Oils such as Rosemary Oil, Clary Sage, Basil, Thyme, Cedarwood are all contraindicated during pregnancy
• Aluminium Chloride – often found in deodorants, but which have some risk to the fetus
• Hydroquinone – a skin-lightener which can reduce hyperpigmentation but has limited research in use during pregnancy but does absorb through the skin so is advised to avoid.
• Formaldehyde – has been linked to miscarriage and can be found in some nail polishes (gel polish) and hair straightening products.
• Phthalates – are found in hair sprays, nail polishes, skin cleansers, shampoos and much more and have been linked to low birthweight babies, premature labours and mental health disorders in infants.

Do you have to change your skincare routine when pregnant?

There is nobody that will tell you that you must change your skincare routine during pregnancy, but your skin will definitely tell you. If your skin becomes reactive, dry, itchy, prone to break outs, sore, or irritable it is time to consider the skincare products you are using. Check the ingredients in your usual range and switch them up for products from specialist brands who really understand pregnancy and who are best placed to advise on natural, effective and safe skincare ingredients. Using naturally-derived ingredients in therapeutic doses will provide your skin with the best care at a time it is at some of its most vulnerable.

Is normal moisturiser safe to use when pregnant?

Many women continue to use their familiar skincare moisturisers during pregnancy but I recommend that you check the ingredients and are careful to ensure that there are none that are advised you avoid during pregnancy such at Retinols. Switching to a natural, fragrance-free moisturiser that contains soothing, calming and hydrating ingredients such as coconut oil, beeswax, Vitamin E, calendula, and Geranium may be more suited to the demands of pregnant skin.

Is caffeine in skincare safe during pregnancy?

Caffeine in pregnancy is a hot topic. Recent studies have linked caffeine to low birthweight babies and even miscarriage and so the NHS advises all pregnant women to reduce their caffeine intake to a maximum of 200mg daily, or preferably to switch to decaf or uncaffeinated whenever possible. However, not only is caffeine present in coffee, tea, some fizzy drinks and some chocolate it is now a popular ingredient in many skincare products particularly those associated with brightening and anti-aging to help reduce and tighten eye bags and brighten the skin. The Midwives at My Expert Midwife recommend that due to a lack of good quality research into caffeine in skincare during pregnancy the best thing is to avoid it, however, there are some studies that suggest if the caffeine is at 5% of total product or less then it should be safe to use.

How to check if skincare is pregnancy-safe?

If you are unsure about whether a skincare product is safe to use in pregnancy there are a few things you can do:
• Check the list of ingredients against the list of those to avoid during pregnancy that you can find above
• Book an appointment with a skincare specialist and ask them
• Speak to one of the Midwives at My Expert Midwife who will be more than happy to offer advice as appropriate, your own Midwife, or your Obstetrician
• Download the Yuka app and scan the products you are interested in for an analysis of the health impact of them (although not pregnancy-specific it scores on the quality of the ingredients and gives you an immediate answer – still check for ingredients that are contraindicated above).
