Hummus fans, brace yourselves, we’ve got some bad news. Hummus prices have gone up all over the world due to a result of the current chickpea shortage.
According to The Grocer, hummus prices have increased by 12% since January 2017, which means an average 310g tub of hummus will now cost you £1.47, rather than the £1.14 it would have been a year ago.
Tasneem Backhouse, joint Managing Director at EHL Ingredients told Metro: ‘Chickpea prices increased during 2017 and remain high.
Demand is strong from every market and currently there isn’t enough supply to go around. This is driven by poor crops in some of the main producing origin nations over the past 12 months.’
With us Brits consuming around 12,000 tones of hummus a year, the shortage has led to a social media panic, but experts are warning us to stay calm, with plenty of supermarkets already replenishing stock.
Now, where did we leave that hummus recipe?
