When it comes to caring for hair as a black or mixed woman in the UK it's always a great opportunity to support home-grown black-owned hair products.

After many years of struggling to find afro hair care on the UK high streets, often with a very small selection of products that were usually sold out when you finally made it to the store, afro hair care has finally had a light shone firmly on it.

Where can I get black-owned hair products?

A whole host of black owned hair care products and brands have become more visible in stores like Boots, Superdrugand Harrods, alongside well-known hair brands, making it easier for black and mixed women to pick up the right products for their curly, coiled and textured hair. And rightly so.

According to The Black Pound Report 2022, established by Lydia Amoah an award-winning business coach, TV presenter, campaigner and founder of cultural change agency, BACKLIGHT, multi-ethnic consumers are spending £230m every month on health and beauty and yet nearly four in ten Black female shoppers stated it is still not easy to find cosmetics and skincare. Multi-ethnic consumers spend 25 per cent more on health and beauty products than any other consumer. This is due in part to 22 per cent of all multi-ethnic consumers needing to go to specialist shops to get all their health and beauty products – increasing to 30 per cent for black women.

So to make things a little easier on busy mums and women looking to support black-owned hair brands, we've rounded up the best UK black-owned hair products, with affordable black owned hair products and premium ones to choose from...

Best award-winning deep conditioner by black-owned hair products brand

Black-owned brand Dizziak’s award-winning deep conditionerSelfridges

We don’t know where we’d be without Dizziak’s award-winning deep conditioner - not to mention their shampoo and scalp treatments, for that matter! The creamy, lightly-scented products make your curls and coils feel like they are nourished deep down to the root.

One reviewer who bought the shampoo as well as the conditioner said, "Bought this with the Dizziak conditioner. I am incredibly impressed with both even though I already use some very good hair products. I was yet to find a moisturising shampoo that doesn't weigh down my hair. This leaves my hair looking and feeling really clean and smooth. My roots look very clean after using this and the shampoo gives a lifting effect. I'm so glad I bought this. Will definitely be buying it again. Thank you Dizziak."

Another reviewer said: "I absolutely love this deep conditioner! It has made my hair so much healthier. Life post pregnancy, combined with the hormone changes that being a mum throws at you, had left my hair dry and unhealthy. A few weeks into using the deep conditioner, my hair looked so much better! Plus the smell makes me feel like I'm having a mini spa treatment each week - very achievable pampering. I've now bought some for most of my favourite ladies and each of them love it!"

Founder of Dizziak Loretta De Feo, a former beauty journalist, wanted to create a product that would work on all hair types, but in particular Afro hair. Ingredients such as aloe vera, castor oil and shea butter feature across the range which also now include a body conditioner and bonus, we like that the bottles look great on your shelf! One thing to note is that not everyone is a fan of the scent, with one reviewer describing it as a "herbal smell" and another reviewer describing it as "interesting".

Try our Dizziak’s award-winning deep conditioner above!

Pros

  • Deep condition in only 5 minutes
  • Decent sized bottle with 200ml of product
  • Suitable for all hair textures
  • The range also has products for your body
  • No parabens. No sulphates. No silicones. No mineral oil. No cruelty. Vegan.

Cons

  • Not everybody is a fan of the scent

Best Gentle & Nourishing Curly Hair Bundle by black-owned hair products brand

Created for mixed textured hair, FYC For Your Curls offers a bundle of four products: Shampoo, Conditioner, Refresh & Detangle spray, and Leave-In conditioner. All FYC products are vegan-friendly and contain no silicones, sulfates or parabens, which is essential for healthy curls. The range is suitable for all kinds of mixed-textured hair, texture 3A to 3C.

One reviewer who absolutely loved these products said; "The shampoo and conditioner are really gentle on my hair and scalp & leave my hair lovely and soft. The tangle spray is an absolute god send, I use this after washing before combing through, and on non wash days to refresh my curls. The leave-in conditioner doesn’t leave your hair tacky or crispy but because my hair is fine I don’t use a lot: I won’t use anything else on my hair now, after 48 years of battling with curly hair products and wasting a lot of money I’ve finally found good value products that work perfectly for me. The only problem is my daughter now won’t use anything else in her hair either, so I have to buy her some too!"

FYC co-founder Rob Binns, a black dad from Preston who struggled to find something that worked on his mixed-race daughter's hair: "Mixed Afro-European hair is unique in its texture. Afro products are often too heavy, and European products too light. We’ve created a range that’s bespoke for this texture of hair, with products that can be used on their own, layered on top of each other, or watered down, dependent on your texture. With mixed-curls, one size never fits all!”

We like that customers have said the product, though thick, are surprisingly lightweight when applied to wet hair, and they rinse out easily. However, some mentioned the leave-in conditioner is a bit drying and that they weren't keen on the smell of the product.

Try out the FYC Gentle & Nourishing Bundle for Curly Hair above. It includes 4 x 250ml Curly Hair Products - Curly Hair Shampoo and Conditioner, Refresh & Detangle Spray and Leave In Conditioner!

Pros

  • Vegan-friendly and contains no silicones, sulfates or parabens
  • Products are quite thick but surprisingly lightweight adn easy to rinse out
  • The shampoo doesn't feel like it strips the hair
  • Leave-in conditioner doesn’t leave your hair tacky or crispy
  • The detangler spray makes a great kids detangler spray to help comb out knots

Cons

  • Some buyers weren't keen on the smell
  • Some have said the leave-in conditioner is a bit drying

What is post-partum hair loss?

Black and mixed women will know all about the amount of hair that can be shed during wash day. Collecting the mounds of hair from the plug so you don’t block the shower and rolling it into a huge ball is kind of satisfying but also can be slightly worrying when there is more one week to another.

Shedding is totally normal as your hair goes through a cycle of growth and then sheds. When you fall pregnant, however, your hair stops this cycle and just grows due to high levels of estrogen and progesterone. This is why some expectant mums will suddenly report new baby hairs along their hairline or their hair just feels really luscious and thick.

After the baby is born, post-partum hair loss happens. As your hormone levels begin to even out you may experience excessive shedding. It is recommended to seek advice from your doctor if you start to experience bald patches or more excessive than you feel comfortable with.

How to care for your hair post-partum

Dr Adaku Jennifer Agwunobi, the founder of hairgoals, which has a collection of gorgeous oils and hair care products, says taking care of your hair during pregnancy and post-partum with products like castor oil will help re-growth.

“I know hair loss is also a big problem for expecting/mums too as post-partum shedding is real! Our Hairgoals premium castor oil really helps to promote hair growth.”

Keeping your hair in loose styles will help prevent any tension loss, particularly those sensitive edges. Consider twists and loose buns that won’t pull on your scalp, and of course conditioning, not only your hair but oiling your scalp will also help.

Sleeping with a bonnet and/or a silk pillowcase has always been part of caring for your afro, textured, or coiled hair and will reduce friction on your locks.

As well as just being kind to yourself post-partum and caring for your own health, Afrocenchix recommend washing your hair more regularly: “Contrary to popular belief, washing your hair less will not help with postpartum hair loss. Instead try to keep to a simple hair routine of cleansing, moisturising and simply styling your hair. Make sure you use a mild shampoo and conditioner and please avoid chemicals and heat! Why? Well, heat, chemical straighteners or dyes can leave your mane even dry and more prone to damage.”
