Baby showers may be a fairly recent introduction to the UK, but they're proving increasingly popular so it's likely you'll be invited to one at some point. While fairly new on this side of the pond, it's safe to say the Americans have baby shower planning down to a fine art. When I lived in the US, my friends went all out and threw a truly incredible Stateside-style baby shower; games, decorations, afternoon tea, the lot. But on this side of the pond? We're arguably still getting to grips with the protocol of a baby shower.
And that extends to the guests. You've bought the perfect baby shower gift and found an adorable card but now what? You know what to write in a birthday card and Christmas cards are a breeze, but what to write in a baby shower card? Fear not! Our team at Mother&Baby have either been guests at, or guest of honour at, our fair share of baby showers so we've got plenty of ideas, whether it's a co-worker's baby shower, a close friend, someone with a keen sense of humour, or everything else in between!
What to write in a baby shower card
When you're planning what to write in a baby shower card, there are a few things to consider first.
1. Do you know the gender of the baby? Tailoring it to a baby boy or girl can be thoughtful, but if they don't know the gender yet (or haven't made it public knowledge!) then stick to gender neutral language.
2. While the mum is obviously (and rightly) the centre of attention at a baby shower, when writing in the baby shower card, it's nice to acknowledge the rest of the family. So for instance, include the father or other half, and any other children in your baby shower greetings.
3. Consider your relationship. If it's your best friend, your tone will be more personal than if you're writing a baby shower card message for a co-worker - we've got ideas for both so keep reading.
4. If you have children already, maybe add some personal words of wisdom or something you know you would have wanted to hear in the mama-to-be's position.
