Testing The Little Green Sheep Natural Knitted Moses Basket
Moses baskets are a staple in any new parent’s household, and I wanted to make sure I had one that I was confident in using and moving around the house. Picking up a Moses Basket from The Little Green Sheep, I had my hopes set on any easy, but stunning, addition to my home – and I was not disappointed.
I’m a first time mum-to-be and I’ve been getting my house ready for my little one’s arrival later this year, but I’ve wanted to start setting bits up early to get my two dogs used to baby items being around the house. So when I was looking for a Moses Basket, I was after one that would go in my living room and be easily moveable. I live in a three-storey house, so my ideal situation was to have something that I could take down to the bottom floor if I wanted to sit in my dining room with the baby, but for the most part it would stay in the living room. When I tell you that I’m yet to find a baby product that felt as easy to use as this Moses Basket, I’m serious!
If you’re someone who is looking to move around the basket to different places in the house, The Little Green Sheep Moses Basket – specifically with a basket stand – is perfect for you. There are a few options on the website, and while I loved the look of the rocking stand, the basket stand is what makes it so simple to use in my circumstances.
This is something that the baby will be in for about six months, but it’ll be used a LOT during that time. My little one is due about a month before Christmas, and when we stay with family, that basket will not be left behind! Not only is it such a good size, allowing our little one to kick around freely when they need to, but it’s so light-weight that I could put my baby in their carrier, grab the bottom with one hand and the basket with the other.
I have the wheat knit basket, which is breathable and very open, so my little one won’t feel like they’re in too tight of a space. Given the advisories for baby’s age – suitable from birth until approximately six months or until they can sit up unaided – it feels very safe. They won’t be rocking in it, nor will they be able to tip themselves out of it. It’s great!
This is on the pricier end of a Moses Basket at £150, but I would pay that just for the pure ease of movement. I’ve come across a lot of alternatives that need you to unscrew something in order to be able to fold it down. With this, you simply take the basket off and you can instantly fold it in half.
When the instructions came with a ‘25 minute’ guidance, I had some serious doubts. I’m not always the best at putting things together, but I gave it a go. The only difficulty I had was solely me getting mixed up and not looking at the images properly, can I blame the company? Absolutely not. That slowed me down by about 10 minutes, but with my screwdriver in hand I fit in the 25 minute guidelines and I’m six months pregnant – yes, I impressed myself!
The mattress is so soft and comfortable, but I’ve purchased a protector and some additional sheets just to make sure I can keep it in its pristine condition. Given the material, it’s not as simple as a wipe down to keep the basket clean, but with a protector on the mattress there should be no issues.
Overall, I feel confident that I’m putting my baby in a secure space for their short naps, and I’m happy with how much I’ll be able to use this, especially when I’m away from home for a couple of nights.
The Little Green Sheep Moses basket won a silver award in our 2020 Mother&Baby awards for the best cot, crib or Moses basket. Here's what our parent testers thought of it...
How did The Little Green Sheep Natural Knitted Moses Basket product make your life easier?
Alison: As a busy Mum of a baby and toddler, anything that makes life easier is greatly valued. Prior to receiving this The Little Green Sheep Natural Knitted Moses Basket, I already actively used a popular brand of bedside crib upstairs and the pram bassinet downstairs, but to my surprise, as soon as we started testing the Moses Basket it became the preferred place for my daughter to rest. The basket is light, yet feels sturdy and is extremely easy to move between rooms and levels of the house - which is a real bonus in comparison to our wooden bedside crib. I have loved that I can easily take the baby around to where my toddler is without needing to disturb her sleep. It is also a great feature that the wool lining of the basket can be easily removed for laundering, which for me makes this basket stand out from others on the market which does not lend themselves to easy cleaning.
Rebecca: A really lovely Moses basket, good solid base to the basket which provides excellent support for baby. Other baskets I have tried are more flexible at the base and I feel they don't support the baby well enough. But this was not the case here. My baby was very happy to lie in the basket. It had a lovely softcover which was easy to wash, and the quality was excellent.
Sarah: This Moses basket makes my life easier as a mum as I know that I have a safe space I can leave my baby to sleep and rest whilst I get on with everyday life. It is great that I can pick the Moses basket up and take it with me into different rooms so that I can continue my life as normally as possible. It has meant that on my partner going back to work I have been able to shower and continue with household chores whilst watching the baby.
Would you recommend The Little Green Sheep Natural Knitted Moses Basket to other mums?
Hannah: I would recommend this to a fellow mum due to the high quality of the product, the look and how easy it is to move around the house, this means that your baby can come with you. Every new mum wants their baby to be safe and comfortable which these products allows. My little girl loves being in the Moses basket and goes to sleep happily.
Juliette: I love the company's commitment to using natural materials and zero chemicals in the design of their product. Even though the basket has been made with sustainability in mind it doesn't compromise on the quality. The fabric lining is so soft and looks very stylish. It's also very reassuring that the mattress is made with natural fibres. It's also lightweight with a foldable stand, which makes it very portable.
Bérengère: This Moses basket is very easy to assemble. The cable net made of wool looks adorable and makes it a comfortable place for the baby to rest or sleep. It is also easy to clean. I think this product offers a good combination of nice to look at and easy to use, which makes it a good item to own when you have a newborn.
Would you choose this product to win?
Laura: What would make me pick this Moses basket compared to other cots, baskets and cribs is firstly the price. For an item that would only really be of use for the first 6 months, it is approx half the price of other bedside cribs. The classic, simple design would also make me choose it, but the organic materials are a big selling point for me compared to other cots, cribs, and baskets.
Hannah: I would choose this product over any other of the market due to the high quality and comfort that it provided for my baby. I feel that the quality is worth the money and that any new baby would enjoy sleeping it in. I feel that the organic nature of the product is a plus as it allows parents to feel confident that they are providing their baby with the best.
Juliette: I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this product to others and think it is a deserved winner. Mainly for its beautiful quality and the company's commitment to being sustainable with the organic knit liner, and chemical-free mattress, which feels very luxurious! For the quality, I think it is a very good value for money and also looks very stylish too!
What changes would you make to The Little Green Sheep Natural Knitted Moses Basket?
Katharine: I think it should come with a mattress protector as standard. This would mean that it was ready for use immediately and without any ‘hidden’ costs. The cover is available on the website with guidance that it is strongly recommended. The product is otherwise all set up and ready to go which is nice and convenient.
Rachael: I would offer or include a canopy hood affair to dim the light a little. This is not essential but when you have a summer baby the daylight can be quite bright and these may help to make it easier for little ones to settle. This would avoid having to move the basket around with changing the light in the room.
Alison: The only change I would make is to the fixed base supplied, I would prefer a base with a rocking feature and option to give a slight tilt to the basket for babies with reflux. A rocking base would be useful for soothing baby to sleep, but this may be available as an option to purchasers. I would rank these as very minor suggestions for what is an excellent product.
