To help make your potty training journey a little easier, we've called on our team of mum testers to try out a selection of the best potty training toilets with their toddlers, and trawled the reviews for any we haven't tested yet, to find the best potty that will take the stress out of toilet training.

After potty training two children, I've picked up my share of tips along the way and one of the key things I learnt is to listen to the experts! With that in mind, we've drawn on the expertise of Amanda Jenner, toilet training expert and founder of My Carry Potty, to find out what you should look for when you're choosing the best potty for your toddler.

How we chose and tested these potties

As parents, we know that choosing a potty can be a big decision - you'll want to be sure it's stable, easy to clean, and the right size for your tot. But your toddler will also have an opinion, so you may also be choosing a potty based on its comfort or whether it has a fun and engaging design that's going to tempt them to use it.

With this in mind, we asked our team of mum testers to consider all these factors when they were testing the potties with their toddlers. They looked at price, how easy it was to use and clean, the design and whether their toddler was happy to use the potty. They also considered factors like portability and whether it could double up as a travel potty.

By using the potties with their own child in their home, our testers were able to give honest feedback based on their firsthand experience of using it in a real-world setting. This has allowed us to create a list of the best potties as well as pinpointing who these might be best for, for instance, the best potty for boys or the best travel potty.

A number of the potties are still in testing, so we've also trawled the reviews to present a balanced guide based on real parents' feedback and will update these as soon as our testers return their verdicts. You can find out more about how we test products for Mother&Baby by visiting our How We Test page.

Getting your toddler to engage in toilet training will be even easier with this potty, which is styled like a real mini toilet. It has a pretend flusher to get them used to practising - although it’s obviously not plumbed in - and it has a handy storage area for a pack of wipes.

This potty isn’t just about practicality but also getting your toddler to feel grown up, and get used to how things work - just on a small scale; mum tester Hannah said: "This potty is great as it looks and sounds like a real-life-size toilet. It is easy to empty and clean and even sounds like a real toilet with a flush button. My little boy had a traditional potty that he would not go near for some reason, and now loves going to the potty like a big boy. It comes in three different colours and is the perfect size for toddlers." It even features a flip-up lid for even more realism.

Despite looking more complicated than a regular potty, we’re pleased to report it’s still pretty easy to keep clean and sanitary; one mum said: “I wasn’t keen on the lights and flushing sound, as I was worried it would seem more like a toy, but my little girl loved it and it got her used to sitting on a toilet just on a much smaller size. I think it’s a great invention.”

We tested this potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2023, where it won Gold for Best Potty Training Product.

Developed by toilet training expert Amanda Jenner, My Carry Potty contains all the step-by-step instructions you need to guide you and your toddler through your potty training journey.

One of the reasons so many parents swear by this potty is its leakproof claim, and we’re happy to hear that all testers seem to agree with this. No one wants a leaky potty after all; our mum tester said: "I loved that it did what it said and was leakproof. I tested it with water first and not a drip came out. It has been amazing in situations where it's not easy to empty immediately, such as when we were at the park without a toilet, we could just use it in a discreet place and then shut it and empty it at home."

It’s easy to use this potty in the house and also on the go, as it’s really portable and easy to carry wherever you go. No, it might not be discreet, but what portable potty is? Being able to use it at home and away means your toddler will have consistency in their training; one mum said: “My toddler likes using this at home and when we go out, and it’s great that he can practise with the same thing wherever we go so there’s no anxiety.”

It's available in a range of fun designs and colours so your tot can help to choose their favourite.

We tested this potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2023, where it won Silver for Best Potty Training Product.

Eco Pourty Potty
The Eco Pourty Potty
Pourty Potty
Price: $15.15 (was £16.83)

www.onbuy.com

The Eco Pourty potty is a classic with a simple but effective design that lends itself to easy cleaning and no fuss potty training. It might not have the noises or colourful design of other potties on our list, but it's a sturdy, long-lasting potty that has won plenty of fans, including Mother&Baby's Rebecca Lancaster who used it with both of her children. She said, "this potty is no frills but it's incredibly easy to clean and you can pour the waste down the toilet efficiently. It's so strong and well made that it's currently being used by its fourth child and is still in near new condition."

Our other mum testers agreed that the Pourty Potty is easy to use, and praised the easy pour element which reduces mess. One mum noted that this has the added benefit of stopping the potty being 'suctioned' onto the bottom - "the channel at the back of the Potty removed the issue with other potties of them forming a seal when used, and lifting off the floor when my little one stood up."

Mums also felt it was more comfortable for their children than others they'd tried, saying "This potty is easy to use and love that the rim of the seat is quite wide and much more comfortable for her to sit on. It doesn’t leave too much of a red mark on her legs as she loves to sit on it and watch TV.".

The potty is made of recycled packaging and is recyclable at the end of its life (though as our writer found, it's so durable, it can be passed on once you've finished with it) which our mum testers appreciated, saying "I also loved the companies ethos and reduced environmental impact the potty has. Something I never considered before having this potty is what happens at the end of its life cycle." The only downside our mum testers found was the lack of colour options.

Pros

  • Channel at the back makes it easy to pour out waste
  • Simple design makes it easy to clean - no crevices
  • Durable and strong material
  • Made of recycled material and is recyclable at the end of its life
  • High splash guard
  • Comfortable, wide seat

Cons

  • Eco option only has one colour, though the normal design has a range of colour choices

The Potette Max

Best 3-in-1 potty

Expert rating:
3.5
Potette PlusMOTHER&BABY/Laura Healy

The Potette Max has a 3-in-1 design, giving you the most practicality of all the potties we’ve tested. You can use it with the hard bowl at home to empty down the toilet; as a travel potty, you can use it with biodegradable liners and a travel bag; and lastly, you can fold it down and use it as a seat on top of the normal toilet. This saves you money as you only have to buy one potty, rather than three; tester Sikha said: "As the mum of a recently potty trained toddler, and a slightly older child too, this product is brilliant. We use it primarily as a child seat for the toilet when we're out and about, and both kids find it comfy and ready to use. It is ready to clean and packs up really small. The carry bag is useful. We have also used it as an emergency potty when we've been caught short and had to pull over while driving."

When purchasing this potty, you’ll get three liners, with more potty liners available at an additional cost. Our Commercial Content Writer, Laura Healy, says, "This is a great travel potty, used with either the disposable liners or reusable liner for when you are out and about, and it saved us a few times when we were too far from a public toilet. It is also useful at home as a toilet seat, and we sometimes used it as a seat in particularly unpleasant public toilets, especially as my daughter had a tendency to hold onto the seat. It is easy to clean and extremely lightweight; I could even fit it in my nappy bag when folded."

We tested this potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2021, where it was Shortlisted for the Best Potty Training Product.

This potty is very similar to the Pote Plus My First WC, tested above; it’s another miniature toilet-style potty with a flushing sound, so your toddler can imitate you going on the big toilet. There’s a storage space for a pack of wipes at the back of the potty; our mum tester Sally said: "This potty really is amazing! It is such a lovely addition to any bathroom/living room or wherever in your house a potty needs to be! It looks very comfortable, and my little one was very happy with it. The flushing is a great feature and such a fun thing for the children to be able to do as a reward after they do their business, just like a big person!"

Our Commercial Content Writer, Laura Healy, says, "This is a great potty which really does look like a mini toilet, so it's ideal to help avoid any fear around using a toilet. I love the storage space at the back from wipes, and of course, the sound effects are extremely fun. It is quite big, though, so it takes up space and is not portable."

SA Products Kids Potty Training Toilet Seat with Splash Guard

Best potty for fun design

Trying out the SA Potty with its toilet roll holder
Mother&Baby

One more mini-toilet potty for you to consider, this time with a cheery character face to make it even more appealing to children. As our tester found, this cute design made her two year old very keen to use it, "The potty has a very fun cheery face design which delighted my little girl no end. She helped me unbox it and immediately wanted to sit on it."

Our tester also liked the height of the toilet which she found more comfortable for her daughter. "The potties she had been using were quite low in comparison and required a much deeper squatting position which sometimes proved difficult and as she backs on to it, she has occasionally missed the seat. However this potty has a brilliant height to it and it means she can sit comfortably and at a 90 degree angle just like a normal toilet."

There’s a pretend flush handle though our tester noted this doesn't move. She did rate the retractable toilet roll holder which means you can always have toilet roll to hand, but can retract it if not needed. Unlike the others on our list, this one doesn’t have storage space for a pack of wipes.

The seat can be used separately on top of a normal toilet when your child is ready to transition from the potty to using the big toilet. The pan itself is also removable and easy to clean though our tester found it a little tricky to take out.

There’s an integrated splash guard at the front, which, while useful, can get in the way when your toddler sits on it and our tester thought it might be less hygienic. "The only down side I can see to this is the fact that you have to move the splash guard into position before the child uses the potty and then return it to its original positions or the lid will not close properly. I feel that this could be a little unhygienic and might mean that you have to clean this at the same time as the tray. It is very easily removed though so I do not think this would be too much of a problem." For this reason, this potty may be better for girls than boys.

Best easy-clean potty

Expert rating:

Mi pottyAmazon

The surface of the mi-potty is said to reduce the growth of germs by up to 99.9% – that's a world first for potties, apparently, and there’s nothing we like better than a hygienic potty. It's also 100% recyclable, which makes it a great choice for eco-conscious parents.

It’s a good-sized potty that is relatively easy to take out and about; our mum tester Chelsea said: “It is a good size to take anywhere, easy for my son to use by himself and has a good size 'bucket' part, so it can handle if my son does big wee etc. It is an easy material to keep clean and is suitable for travel. It is lightweight so if my son doesn't like where I put it, he can move it to wherever suits him at that moment in time."

The design is meant to make it comfortable for your toddler to sit upon, with back support and feet to stabilise it - although we have never noticed a toddler sit on a potty long enough to worry about their back being comfortable.

We tested this potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2022, where it won Gold for the Best Potty Training Product.

Pros

  • Very hygienic with anti-bacterial properties
  • Comfortable to sit upon
  • It's one of the cheaper potties

Cons

  • It might be too big to fit into regular bathroom sinks for cleaning

When should you start potty training?

If you're on the hunt for the best potty, it's likely you've already noticed that your child is ready for potty training. Amanda Jenner tells us this is one of the first things you need when starting potty training. "Check if your little one is showing signs of readiness first." She also advises that you "talk to your little one 2 weeks before you start potty training as this will give them a better understanding of what they are about to do". Timing is also important, so "choose your time wisely and do not start if you have moved house, been poorly, changed nursery, or a new family member has arrived."

If you have spotted signs of being ready for potty training, for example, they're stopping in their tracks, hiding whenever they need to go, or taking more of an interest in the toilet, then they're ready for a potty. Amanda advises you "ditch the nappy/pull-ups and go to potty training pants as this will get them potty trained quicker" and there are also lots of potty training products that will make the journey easier.

Choosing the right potty for your toddler and you

While you're potty training, the potty is going to go everywhere with you; to friends and family's homes, to the shops, on walks in the woods, and to cafes. That's why you'll want to consider everything from how easy the potty is to empty, the size, how simple it is to transport and how easy it is to clean.

Amanda says when it comes to choosing a potty for your child, it's also "important that your little one has a connection with their potty as they will be the one that is using it."

With that in mind, why not show them a couple before you buy and see what they think. "The rule is to get your children involved and pick their own potty and potty training pants to make it fun, and it also encourages them to want to use it if they are involved from the offset," explains Amanda.

Finally, she adds, "Purchase your potty one month before they start so they can practice and get used to it."

Types of Potties: Which one is best for your child?

Potty training toilet seat – If you're keen to get them used to using the real toilet and getting to grips with the bathroom space, then a potty training toilet seat could be a good way to start. These make the seat smaller for little bottoms but you'll also need a small step stool so they can get on independently.

Plastic potty – The most basic form of a potty you're probably most familiar with and often the most affordable. If you're keen to have a few potties around the home, then a budget plastic potty might be the best option for you.

Travel potty – Whether you're planning a family holiday or you're always on the road with your toddler, a potty that you can easily travel with is a must-have. It will also make park visits easier and avoids stress if you can't find a toilet in the shopping centre for instance.

Removable bowl potty – With multiple parts, these potties have a removable bowl which you can take out and clean. Some have a separate which can sit over the toilet for when they get a bit older.

How to choose a potty for your toddler

If you've read this far you'll have realised there's a huge range of potty types and styles out there. The one you choose is likely to depend on your lifestyle and your child. For instance, if you spend most of your days at the park, you'll want to find a travel potty that you can pop into the pram and use on the go. If you often visit friends' houses, a portable toilet seat could be useful. But if your little one will mostly be toilet training in your house, you could opt for one of the larger and more toilet-like potties.

Some features to consider when choosing a potty:

Weight – Some potties are much heavier than others, such as the Pote Plus My First WC. If you want your child to be able to carry their potty independently, then opt for a lighter option. Alternatively, if you want to leave the lifting of the potty to the grown-ups (it's understandable why), then you might be better off going for a heavier potty.

Size – As potties will most likely be used when your toddler is around the age of two, it's important to make sure it's small enough for them to use in terms of the seat. You'll also want to consider how much space you have for a potty as some take up more space than others.

Comfort – No toddler will sit somewhere they aren't comfortable. Especially when it comes to having a number two, it's important for your toddler to want to sit for a while.

Ease of use – There are so many designs on the market but it's worth thinking about what is going to be easiest for your little one to use.

Cleaning – With the more basic potties, you simply need to pour out the waste and clean the bowl, which you can do in minutes. These smaller potties are fine if they're sit down well, but if you're potty training a boy, you may prefer a potty with a splash guard to avoid any messy accidents.

Toddler appeal – It's important that your toddler gets excited about their potty. Amanda says, "having fun characters that little one can relate to is key to successful potty training." From cute designs to the added reward of being able to flush and feel very grown up, finding a potty they're excited to use is essential.

Portability – Whether you're always travelling or your tot spends a lot of time at their grandparents, keeping portability in mind is important. You might also want to opt for a second potty to live at caregivers' homes, or use a travel potty such as the My Carry Potty.

How to make potty training easier for you and your toddler

Potty training can be one of the biggest milestones you go through with your tot in the early years and while it can be daunting, there are a ways to make it less stressful.

• Do your research. There are some excellent potty training books that are full of tips for potty training

• Try to learn their schedule so you have a rough idea of how often they go to the toilet and when

• Encourage independence. For instance, let them have a say in the potty you choose, help flush the toilet and wash their hands themselves

• Establish a consistent routine. Encourage them to try to sit on the potty as soon as they wake up, after mealtimes and before bed

• Don't stress about accidents or setbacks, just clean them up calmly and try not to get frustrated

• Use positive reinforcement such as a potty training reward chart. Amanda adds, "Set up a good reward system that is easy to understand make it fun and be sure to take it with you when you venture out as well."

Common potty training challenges & how to overcome them

While the best potty can make your life easier as a parent, and can help your little one to get used to being a big kid and learning how to use the toilet, there are likely to be some setbacks along the way. “Toilet training takes from a few weeks to a month on average to master but all children are different," says Amanda, so the chances are you'll have a few setbacks which could include:

• Not wanting to sit on the toilet: It may be that they're not ready. Wait a few weeks and try again. Remember that turning potty training into a battle isn't going to be fun for either of you. Try some reward charts to tempt them into sitting on the potty and keep books or toys near the potty so they're more inclined to sit for longer. Above all else, praise them when they do sit down or go for a wee or poo in the potty.

• Being dry for a while but then wetting themselves: The NHS notes that this could be a sign of a bladder infection, constipation, or type 1 diabetes so speak to your GP. There could also be an emotional reason for potty training regression, for instance a big life change like a new baby sibling. Try to be sympathetic, stay calm and keep reminding them to use the potty.

• Having accidents: Unfortunately it's very likely your tot will have a few accidents. As our potty training expert, Amanda Jenner tells us, it’s easy to get frustrated if your child has an accident but try to keep calm, even if you don’t feel it. “You wouldn’t be normal if you didn’t get upset when they stand in front of you and poo. But rather than say ‘don’t worry, it’s okay’ be firm and say ‘that’s not where the poo goes is it, that’s not right”. Pick up the poo in their pants, pop it in the potty and take it to the toilet so they can see where it should go. It’s much better to say this is right and this is wrong than ‘never mind’. But give them lots of praise and attention when they do get it right.”

Best potty: Frequently Asked Questions

Why use a potty instead of a toilet?

As a small child, the toilet can look like a very big place. Not only is it hard to climb up on, but the seat is often far too large for little bottoms, and the seat can also feel quite cold and uncomfortable at first. Until they're confident on the potty and know how to flush without getting frightened by the loud noise, then it's a good idea to stick to a potty.

What is the most effective potty training method?

There are a number of potty training method but they won't all work for you and your toddler as much of it comes down to the time you have, whether your tot is at nursery, and even whether you have carpets or hard floors! From elimination communication to the 3-day potty training rule, and potty training in a week, it's worth asking friends for recommendations, or borrowing some potty training books from the library beforehand to see what might work for your lifestyle.
