How Mother&Baby tested and selected the best prams and pushchairs on the market in 2025.
Here at Mother&Baby, we know how important it is to choose the right pram or pushchair. As mums ourselves, we've been in your position, looking at a huge array of choices and wondering which one to buy. That's why we aim to test every product with parents like you. Using our knowledge of the baby market, and our experience as mums, we're able to guide you through the choices and give you honest feedback, so you can make the right decision for you.
Who carried out the testing?
All 18 of the pram and pushchairs featured in this buying guide were tested by real parent testers including myself for over a month.
How were the products tested?
Parents tested them with their 3-month to 3-year-old children to assess durability in everyday life. This included everything from supermarket trips and school runs to holidays abroad and some were even tested on planes.
Read more about how we test.
What were the products tested for?
We asked our testers to evaluate the following:
-
Brake effectiveness: How quickly, smoothly, and securely the pram's brakes engage to prevent movement.
-
Portability: How easy the pram is to carry or transport when not in use.
-
Weight: The weight of pram itself, impacting how easy it is to lift, carry, and manoeuvre.
-
Safety: If they meet the requirements of BS EN 1888, the British and European safety standard for all prams and pushchairs.
-
Age suitability: The age range of children for which the pram is safely designed and appropriate.
-
Size: The overall dimensions of the pram when open and when folded, affecting its navigability in tight spaces.
-
Budget: The price of the pram and whether it offers good value for money relative to its features, quality, and typical market prices.
-
Adjustability: The range and ease with which parts of the pram can be altered, such as handle height, seat recline as well as footrest position.
-
Storage capacity: The amount of storage space available in the under-seat basket for carrying essentials like nappies, bags, or shopping.
-
Foldability: How easily and compactly the pram can be folded down for storage or transport, including the mechanism.
Our ratings
Each product was then scored out of 5 in the following categories: ease of use, assembly, folding, storage, durability, stability, manoeuvrability, comfort and overall design. From this we were able to give each product an overall rating. Here's what they mean:
⭐ 1/5 — Poor: Didn’t meet expectations in this area at all. Major drawbacks or uncomfortable design made it hard to recommend.
⭐ 2/5 — Fair: Some useful features but significant issues. Might work for some, but we found better options.
⭐ 3/5 — Good: Did the job reasonably well, with a few flaws. Solid choice for the basics but didn’t stand out.
⭐ 4/5 — Very good: Impressive performance with only minor drawbacks. A reliable, high-quality option.
⭐ 5/5 — Excellent: Outstanding in this category. Comfortable, supportive, and well-made — the best we tested.

Pram and pushchair comparison table.
As a mum of three I know my way around prams and pushchairs, but I still remember that overwhelming feeling when faced with so many options. When I had my third baby, I quickly remembered how a reliable pram can become your favourite wheeled companion (aside from the car, of course!), especially as you're likely to be pushing it around almost every day.
In this article:
What's the difference between a pushchair, pram, buggy and stroller?
While they look similar and ultimately do the same thing, they each have their own use and specific features.
Pram: Designed for newborns and features a bassinet or carrycot so the baby can lie flat. It often comes as a travel system that combines the pram and car seat using the same base. Some prams also come with a stroller seat (for 6 month+ babies) which grows with your child making it a great investment.
Pushchair: Mainly used for older babies who have mastered the art of sitting up and while they don’t always lie flat, children can sit in an upright or reclined position - ideal for curious little minds. They sometimes offer both parent/rear and forward facing positions.
Buggy: Similar to a travel stroller, this typically refers to a lightweight pushchair that's easy to fold and offers a more compact size making it ideal when travelling with kids.
Regardless of what you go for, it ultimately needs to be safe, comfortable and have the features you need to make your life easier - whether that's the size, weight, travel seat compatibility or easy fold. As with everything baby-related, there are so many to choose from and all at different price points, so it's important to know what each offers and if it's the right choice for you.

The Bugaboo Butterfly is a celebrity favourite and a top choice for parents seeking a cabin-approved pram that combines style and convenience. Perfect for city living and frequent travellers, this ultra-compact stroller arrives pre-assembled, requiring only the seat in-lay to be attached. Suitable from six months, it can accommodate newborns with the addition of adaptors and a compatible car seat (sold separately).
What we love
Our tester was impressed by the lightweight design, which makes it effortless to push and steer on various terrains. Despite its small wheels, the Butterfly performed well on bumpy surfaces like cobblestones and steps. The brake system, while requiring some force to engage, is centrally located and secure. The standout feature of this stroller is its simple fold mechanism: a quick push of two buttons collapses it into an ultra-compact form, making it easy to store and perfect for fitting in aeroplane overhead lockers. The spacious seat offers comfort and durability and is also IATA-approved so can neatly fit into the overhead locker on a plane (but check with your airline before flying). Despite its compact size, the under-seat basket is surprisingly large, holding up to 8kg of essentials “The flexible rear opening made it easy to pop things in and out,” said our tester. Our tester found the extended sun canopy with a mesh ventilation panel provided ample shade and improved visibility. If you are looking for more features from birth, you might want to consider the Bugaboo Bee 5 or Bugaboo Dragonfly, both offering extra features and suitable for newborns.
What we don't love
The seat reclines comfortably, though not fully flat but is still handy for naps and unfortunately the handlebar doesn't adjust.

The UPPAbaby Vista V2 is a parent favourite, offering a classic pram look with modern durability. Designed to grow with your family, it’s a versatile choice for first-time parents and those planning for more children.
What we love
With luxurious fabrics, leather detailing, and adjustable handles, it’s as stylish as it is practical. The spacious under-seat storage holds essentials, and the item comes complete with a carrycot which can double up as an overnight sleep solution which makes it brilliant value for money compared to others on the market. "This was extremely useful when staying away from home, as we didn’t have to worry about taking additional cots," shared mum tester Daniella. "Really easy to push, and the larger wheels make bumpy terrain a breeze," noted one tester. Plus, the front wheel locks have a handy visual indicator that displays red or green. The secure five-point harness keeps little ones snug and upright. The large storage basket can take up to 13 kg in weight which is impressive and lastly, the pushchair is compatible with various car seats using multiple adaptors and featuring accessories like the PiggyBack ride-along for older siblings. Plus, it’s customisable and you can choose from seven different colour hoods. All in all and despite its higher price, the Vista V2’s premium build, practical features, and ability to adapt as your family grows make it a solid investment.
What we don't love
"The Vista V2 is wider, which is perfect for me, but I appreciate not everyone will have a car boot large enough," Daniella added.

Thule Spring
For active parents seeking a sturdy stroller that can handle all terrains, built for movement, whether it’s a walk in the woods, navigating narrow streets, or strolling through the park or beach.
What we love
Its lightweight design and exceptional manoeuvrability. Our mum tester Katie, was was particularly impressed "The three wheels make mobility great, whether you're pushing the stroller across the grass at the park or navigating narrow aisles in a shop." The foam-filled wheels absorb bumps, providing a smoother ride that’s perfect for naps. The reclining seat is easy to adjust, helping you find the best position for your child. Parents also appreciated the extendable canopy, which offers excellent sun protection and can be adjusted for extra coverage when needed. Katie found this feature especially convenient, “If you're caught unprepared in the rain, you can simply unzip and extend the canopy further.” The one-hand fold is another standout feature, making it easy to store and transport. Katie said “Its compact size is ideal – I can even fit it in the back of the car alongside my Golden Retriever with ease!” Other practical features include a mesh panel for quick child monitoring, an adjustable handlebar for better posture (ideal for taller parents like our 5'7" tall tester Katie), and a foot lock system with a double-locking feature for added safety on inclines. The five-point harness ensures your child stays secure.
What we don't love
Katie had one minor preference, “The only thing I would have liked is for the bumper bar to be included, as many strollers come with one.”

Graco Myavo Compact Stroller
The Graco Myavo Compact Stroller earned silver in the Mother&Baby Awards 2025 for Best Lightweight Buggy
The Myavo offers great value if you're looking for an affordable option from birth. It also features the choice of a three-or five-point harness system for added security and a detachable bumper bar for easy access.
What we love
I tested this one myself with my daughter and found she was happy to sit in it, as she usually tries to climb out - that alone speaks volumes about the comfort and design. The back reclined to a laying flat position and I found the stroller’s frame so lightweight - it's only weighs 5.8 kg. The handle height id also ideal handle. We’ve taken it everywhere from the zoo to the beach to grassy fields, without any problems. I did notice that my daughter slid down slightly in the seat, but the harness kept her secure and comfortable. I loved that it fit easily into car boots, leaving ample space for other essentials and while some testers found that the mechanism for the one-handed fold can be tricky, I found it a breeze and that alone was enough to impress me. One standout feature is the 360-degree swivel wheels, making it easy to steer on various terrains like gravel, grass, and pavement.
What we don't love
Some parents pointed out that without the brake engaged, a strong gust of wind could move the stroller.

What we love
Our parent testers found the Didofy Stargazer simple to assemble, taking just 10 minutes to attach the wheels and set the seat direction. The one-hand fold is particularly useful especially when holding a child as mum tester Anne found "I felt the Didofy Stargazer was an excellent stroller, especially coming as part of an 11-piece bundle. I think it is very reasonably priced. The one-handed fold and easy manoeuvrability were excellent features, and the fact that it is made out of recycled bottles is a great addition for those who are more eco-conscious." Another nifty feature is the extendable handlebar up to 110cm and can be driven both world and parent-facing. The UPF 50 hood, featuring a peek-a-boo window, extends for full coverage, while the five-point harness is easily adjustable for a secure fit. Parent testers also loved the large shopping basket, which provides plenty of space for essentials.
What we don't love
While the Didofy Stargazer performs best on pavements and smooth grass, it can struggle with potholes and curbs. Some testers also noted that the rain cover doesn’t fully protect the feet of taller children.

Weighing just 6.2kg, it's effortless to carry, easy to assemble, and perfect for air travel. For parents seeking a practical yet stylish option, the Quid² offers a luxurious feel at a mid-range price.
What we love
Our mum tester was impressed with the hassle-free assembly, saying, "pleasantly surprised that the only ‘building’ required was attaching the wheels." With its one-handed fold, our parent testers found it incredibly convenient, allowing them to collapse the stroller while holding their baby. It also folds compactly, standing upright when stored. Another plus point is that it's cabin-approved! One tester shared, "We were able to load it into the overhead locker on the plane with ease, meaning we didn't have the extra stress of waiting for it to be unloaded from the cargo hold once we landed." The smooth manoeuvrability makes it easy to push over different terrains, ensuring a comfortable ride for little ones. "Our little one found it extremely comfortable, and at nap time, she quickly fell asleep once we reclined the pushchair using the simple release mechanism."
What we don't love
While parents loved the extendable UPF 50+ canopy, offering great sun protection. However, one small drawback was the loud velcro on the ventilation window, which could potentially disturb a sleeping baby.

The Joie Litetrax Pro is ideal if you're looking for a pram with a lie-flat position for newborns to sleep comfortably in while you’re out and about. When you’re ready to hit the road, it easily converts into a travel system with Joie’s 0+ car seats, perfect for those busy days when you need to switch from car to pram quickly.
What we love
The all-wheel suspension ensures a smooth, bump-free ride, even if your little one decides to nap during the outing. When it comes to setup, the Litetrax Pro couldn’t be easier. Our parent tester, Jim, had no trouble getting it ready straight out of the box, no complicated instructions or fuss, just simple assembly. Folding and storing the pram is a breeze too. It’s light enough to lift and there’s no need to remove the wheels for storage. It’s packed with handy features like an adjustable leg rest for your little one’s comfort, a large hood with a ventilated panel to keep them cool on warmer days, and a rain cover. Another standout feature is the canopy, which includes a neat ‘peekaboo’ flap that you can peel back to keep an eye on your baby as you walk, perfect for checking on them without interrupting your stroll. The swivel wheels make steering smooth and easy, and you can lock them for extra control when you’re on uneven surfaces.
What we don't love
Our dad tester did mention one improvement he'd like to see saying, "I'd like to be able to pull the handle out more toward me - to help prevent my feet from catching the back wheels occasionally."
While the wheels can handle everyday paths, it’s not as well-suited to rougher terrain. The under storage basket is handy but if you have a larger changing bag, it might not fit as comfortably, but we're just nit picking!

The Bugaboo Donkey 5 is a great option if you have an older child and a baby. It's basically a convertible 2-in-1 pram and can easily switch between a single stroller and a double stroller with just a two clicks. With multiple configurations, it’s compatible with various car seats, making life easier for parents on the go.
What we love
One of the standout features is how easy it is to convert the Donkey 5 to a double stroller. Our tester, dad-of-two Joe, mentioned that "At no stage did I doubt the strength of any part, harness, wheels, frame, everything feels premium." This pram is built to last and can handle the rough and tumble that comes with active kids, so you can feel confident that it will stand up to frequent use. If you’re using it in mono (single) mode, you’ll appreciate the handy side basket making it easy to access items like dummies or bottles. It’s these thoughtful details that make the pram practical for busy parents. When it comes to getting around, the Donkey 5 shines with its large wheels and high ground clearance, which make it perfect for both city streets and more rugged paths. Joe shared, "The sturdy, single-style wheels twist and turn over bumps and uneven terrain, allowing us to take the scenic route without worry." Despite its larger size, it’s still easy to handle and manoeuvre, even in tight spots. There are plenty of benefits to the Donkey 5, like its height-adjustable handles, spacious design, and smooth steering. It’s also easy to fold down and feels really well-built.
What we don't love
It’s not without its downsides: the pram doesn’t fold very well with the seats attached, which could be a bit frustrating if you’re in a rush to store it. Plus, in double mode with the hoods on, it can be a tight squeeze to fit both seats. And, it doesn’t come with a foot muff, which is something you may need to purchase separately in winter.

Joolz Geo3
Best eco-friendly pushchair
www.naturalbabyshower.co.uk
What we love
The pushchair arrives in fully recyclable packaging, with a fun cut-out template for kids to play with. Assembly was straightforward, requiring only wheel attachment and cot expansion, and although there was some initial difficulty with unclear diagrams, the demo video on the Joolz website was very useful. It also comes with the cot making it a solid investment and a range of stylish colours. We also love that the pram is made using recycled plastic bottles. Performance-wise, the Geo3 handles various terrains well, though it felt bumpier on uneven pavements. “It feels lightweight to push and easy to manoeuvre one-handed but also heavy enough for my baby to feel safe and secure in the cot” one of our mum testers commented. Folding and unfolding is effortless after a bit of practice, and the compact size makes it easy to store and transport. The spacious cot and adjustable seat height were appreciated, as was the large under-seat basket for shopping, and ticked pretty much all of our boxes. Safety features include a sturdy chassis, reflective wheel strips, a supportive bumper bar, and an extendable handlebar for users of different heights. Its puncture-proof XL wheels and 5-point safety harness ensure smooth navigation and secure rides over various terrains. The washable fabrics and good ventilation make it practical for any hot weather.

This versatile stroller is a popular choice for parents. It's incredibly easy to navigate city streets and transport, from the underground to buses and even aeroplanes, fitting neatly into overhead lockers. Plus, you can add a newborn pack, making this sturdy, compact frame a reliable option from day one.
What we love
The YOYO2 can fold down to cabin baggage friendly dimensions, while retaining its sturdy frame – as parents, this is one of the biggest selling points. This stroller weighs 6.2kg keeping it within the range of one of the lightest strollers in the world. Group Editor for M&B, Maria Martin tested it out with her 2 year old and was impressed that you had a ready assembled pram to go as soon as you pull it out the box and it's been a breeze ever since "From day trips in London to the morning nursery runs and ample car journeys, the YOYO2 has slotted into our life with ease." She also loved the compact size "The YOYO2 entering my life instantly made me feel like I’d decluttered a seriously messy wardrobe." The stroller has a 'soft drive' system which makes it glide well on even terrain. The YOYO2 boasts plush, anti-UV, water-repellent fabric and a sleek, easy-fit harness that comfortably seats toddlers. It offers multiple recline positions but doesn't lie flat. Handy features include a canopy window and zipped pocket also worth mentioning, exceptionally stable on the move, its high-end aluminium and reinforced plastics ensure durability and recyclability.
What we don't love
Maria noted a few things she's like to change "One update I’d like to see in the future, is to have an extendable handlebar, to make it easier to use things like the wheeled board and for taller parents. It would also be favourable to have a lie-flat seat unit to aid with things like nap times on-the-go."

The carrycot received rave reviews, with testers praising its sun shield for offering excellent shade and air ventilation, plus the magnetic fastening, which they found clever and neat. The mattress in the carrycot was noted for being padded and comfortable. Our parent tester Margo appreciated the pushchair’s design and usability, saying it felt like a “high-quality product that would grow with their child.” Meanwhile, Emily loved the "stylish appearance, quality materials, and the comfortable leather-look handle." Another tester Pip also admired the small details, such as the phone pouch and the padded memory foam, which added comfort for the baby. The big tyres and easy-to-remove base were also praised for their practicality and durability.
What we don't love
The rain cover won't fit the chair with the seat fully reclined, and hood extended

Best compact pushchair

The Mamas & Papas Ocarro was shortlisted in Mother&Baby Awards 2022 for Best Pushchair
Perfectly suited for families who enjoy exploring both urban and off-road environments, this all-terrain pushchair boasts a large, durable design that delivers both style and practicality.
What we love
Our mum tester, Nicola found the Ocarro to be perfect for nursery drop-offs and pick-ups, and was impressed by its ability to fold down compactly, while still being spacious and comfortable enough for her baby to sleep soundly. The Ocarro’s one-hand fold was particularly appreciated by our testers, especially during rainy days when they had to quickly pack up. Reflective wheel rims allow for safe nighttime walks, and the tough tyres make it versatile for different terrains. Celia, another tester, noted that while the Ocarro is a full-size pram, it’s still easy to store due to its compact fold. She appreciated how the pram doesn’t feel cumbersome to carry when folded and found it easy to manoeuvre. Others praised the extended hood, which offers ample shade, the zipper that allows for ventilation, and the flap for checking on the baby, providing peace of mind.
What we don't love
It doesn't stand up easily when folded and Ooe tester Nicola did note that access to the basket was a bit limited and let the pram down.

Nuna TRIV Next
The Nuna TRIV Next took gold in the Mother&Baby Awards 2025 for Best Pushchair
Compact and easy to handle, the Nuna TRIV fits right into a busy lifestyle – whether that means city walks, quick car trips, or just trying to get your little one out the door without a meltdown.
What we love
It’s lightweight without feeling flimsy and folds with one hand, stands up on its own, and doesn’t require wrestling it to fit into a car boot. Molly, our mum tester, put it together at 40 weeks pregnant, which tells you everything about how simple the setup is. "The seat positions and collapsible carrycot were easy to switch between, and everything felt high-quality. I especially love the stylish black colour scheme with brown leatherette accents on the handle and front bar," she shared. Manoeuvrability is another big plus. One parent tester was surprised at how well it handled tight corners and crowded spaces, and even mentioned that her little one, who usually fights naps “drifted off quickly and comfortably” in the TRIV Next. That’s the kind of magic parents dream about.
Let's not forget the small stuff that makes a big difference: the reversible seat, and the collapsible carrycot that stores easily when it’s not in use. Molly found it perfect for her post-birth recovery, saying, "I own two pushchairs, but I always grab this one as my go-to because it’s so much lighter." Larger wheels improve handling, though it’s not as rugged as the MIXX Next or DEMI Grow.
What we don't love
Some testers felt the suspension could be better, especially on bumpier terrain.

Best pushchair for versatility

www.pramworld.co.uk
The Silver Cross Tide bagged silver award in the Mother&Baby Awards 2024 for Best Pushchair
Impressing parents with its versatility and high-quality design, this three-in-one travel system includes a stylish chassis, a carrycot for newborns, and a reversible, reclining pushchair seat.
What we love
One parent tester said “While testing the Tide, we have been out to supermarkets, shopping centres, and on dog walks, and the wheels didn’t get stuck at all. It’s easy to steer and manoeuvre over both curbs and fields. It’s narrow enough that getting through a busy town or supermarket aisles isn’t an issue.” The pushchair was praised for its balance of function, size, and comfort. Thoughtful features stood out, including the extendable hood with a ventilation panel and the magnetic-style buckle, which one reviewer found "so much easier than other major pram brands I have used." However, some felt it was a pricier option compared to others on the market including the Graco Myavo Compact Stroller. Another favourite feature was the zip pocket on the back of the pushchair seat, which offers easy access to essentials. One tester noted, "I found it a lot easier than having to keep bending down to the basket, and it was large enough to fit my phone and keys." Let's not forget that it also folds down compactly without needing to remove the seat, making it a great space-saver for busy parents.
What we don't love
One tester who lived in a rural area did say "I was hoping for something to tackle this terrain and whilst the buggy managed, it wasn’t effortless and the wheels, although don’t puncture, are too narrow for the soft ground."

If you're an active parent looking for a pram that fits easily into your busy lifestyle, the Out'n'About Nipper Sport v5 could be exactly what you need. It’s built with families who love the outdoors in mind, whether you're navigating muddy trails, cobbled streets, or rushing to catch the train.
What we love
It’s sturdy and versatile, perfect for off-road adventures or smooth jogs in the park. The large 16” air-filled tyres and suspension system ensure a comfortable ride for your little one, no matter the terrain. One of our testers, Hatty, mentioned how impressed she was with how smooth the ride was for both her and her daughter, even on rougher surfaces. It's designed to make outings easier, with features which Hatty liked, "The buggy easily collapses and folds up well, the wheels can be taken off with very little effort and this allows for it to be compact in the car, something which we usually struggle with in our not-so-spacious boot." Once set up, the Nipper Sport v5 became a reliable companion for all sorts of outings, including a family holiday. "We used the OutNAbout Nipper Sport v5 with our daughter on various different outings, including a family holiday to Center Parcs and a 5k run across the tarmac and off-road tracks around Blenheim Palace." The pram's safety features include a five-point harness and a front-wheel brake, giving peace of mind when you’re on the go. Plus, the extendable sunshade with a UV visor and peekaboo window is a nice touch on sunny days.
What we don't love
Hatty said "It did take us about 45 minutes, and we initially had a small hiccup with the front brake pad. The instructions weren’t very clear so they had to call customer service to sort it out. While the fixed front wheel provides stability for jogging, it does make tight indoor turns a little trickier.

Best lightweight pushchair

The Silver Cross Clic stroller earned a Bronze Award in the Mother&Baby Awards 2022 for Best Lightweight Buggy/Stroller
This sleek, compact stroller is ideal for parents who are always on the go, offering a lie-flat seat that’s suitable from birth. It’s the lightest on our list and its easy-to-fold feature that doesn’t sacrifice quality or functionality.
What we love
Our parent tester, Nikki, shared how this stroller has simplified her day-to-day life. She noted, “Getting our full pram in and out of the car is a hassle, and it’s also so bulky, so this lightweight stroller has really helped on both fronts!” She praised how compact the stroller is when folded down, making it easy to store in the car while leaving ample room for other items. The shoulder strap feature also impressed her, as it allowed her to carry the stroller like a hand bag without difficulty, freeing up her arms to manage other tasks. Another M&B tester, Ildiko highlighted the stroller’s quick fold and removable handlebar, making it a great option for those who need a stroller that’s easy to pack away. She also appreciated the top window, which lets you check on your little one without disturbing their nap. “The stroller looks super comfortable,” she commented, “My LO sits happily in there and naps restfully. It uses hardly any space in the car, and being lightweight, it’s easy to pack away.”
What we don't love
The Silver Cross Clic stroller does have a few downsides. The pinch release to sit the baby back up requires both hands, making one-handed operation difficult. Some parents also found the stroller a bit wobbly at first, though it becomes more stable with use. The folding clip can be tricky to unlock with a baby in your arms, and the hood could be larger with an additional window for easier checking on your child.

Pram and pushchair buying guide
Shopping for my third pushchair hasn't been easy despite having done it before. The options available are endless and they change so quickly with convenient new features to suit parents and little ones needs. However, there are some basics that can help you when looking for a pram or pushchair for your baby.
Age suitability
First, think about your baby’s age. Prams and pushchairs are designed for different stages of growth. If you’re shopping for a newborn, you’ll need a pram that either reclines fully, or has a bassinet-style seat to keep them comfy and safe. You might also want to think about if you want a parent-facing stroller. For babies over six months, you can consider a pushchair that has an adjustable seat so they can sit up comfortably. If you're specifically looking at a running buggy, remember that while they work as regular pushchairs for newborns, you won’t be able to run with them until your baby is at least six months old.
Type of use
Next, consider how you’ll use your pram. If you live in the city and do lots of short trips, a lightweight pushchair with smaller wheels will be perfect for navigating through busy streets and tight spaces. If you’re planning to travel, compact and lightweight travel strollers are a good bet as they don’t take up too much space in the car. On the other hand, if you love the outdoors and plan on taking your baby for walks through the park or the countryside, an all-terrain pram with bigger wheels will handle those bumpy paths with ease.
Weight
Think about how often you’ll need to lift the pram in and out of your car or take it on public transport. If you’re going to be carrying it up stairs or storing it in the car frequently, a lightweight pram will save you a lot of effort. But if you’ll mostly be using it out and about near your home where you don’t need to go up and down stairs or transport in the car, you can focus more on the features and sturdiness of the pram rather than weight.
Budget
Prams and pushchairs come in a range of prices. If you’re on a budget, you can find affordable pram options between £50 and £200, which cover the basics and work perfectly for trips and short daily walks. If you’re willing to spend a little more, in the £200 to £600 range, you’ll get extra features like adjustable seats, better suspension for a smoother ride, and longer-lasting fabrics. If you’re after something more luxurious, high-end prams (costing £700 and up) often offer top-quality materials, a stylish design, and features that will last for many years.
Key features to look for in a pram or pushchair
Safety
All prams, buggies, strollers and pushchairs should meet the British Standard 7409:1996 or BS EN 1888:2003 safety regulations according to the ROSPA guidance (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). If you're buying a second-hand pushchair, always check they comply with the latest regulations. The bigger the base, the more stable the pushchair is but be sure not to hang heavy bags on the handle, this may cause it to tip backwards. Lastly, don't use the pram if your baby exceeds the weight limit.
Seat type
Some toddler stroller seats have the option to be parent-facing or outward facing. Other things to consider with seat type is how flat it can lie for newborns and comfortable recline positions for nap times for older babies and children.
Foldability
Arguably one of the most important features for any pram or pushchair. Whether storing it in a car, on public transport, or at home, you need a quick and effortless fold. While some travel systems may require detaching the seat, lighter strollers often fold compactly, even becoming airline-compatible. This convenience is largely driven by Smart-fold technology, which streamlines collapsing and setting up the pram. Features like one-handed operation, self-standing designs, and automatic locking, or the ability to fold with the seat attached, all make a bulky item user-friendly and portable and a big win for parents!
Storage basket
The storage basket under the pram needs to suit your needs and will come in handy more than you think, especially if you don't have a car.
Wheels and tyres
Suspension and wheel technology are crucial for a pram or pushchair's ride quality and across different terrains. Suspension systems (often spring-based or shock absorbers) are designed to absorb bumps and reduce jolting providing a smoother ride for your child and easier pushing for you. Wheel types also vary: smaller, solid wheels are great for smooth city pavements and compact folds, while larger, air-filled or all-terrain wheels offer superior shock absorption and traction, making them ideal for rougher paths, parks, or off-road adventures. Some models also feature swivel lock wheels for improved manoeuvrability that can be locked for stability on uneven ground.
Eco fabrics
With an increase in demand for sustainable products, you'll notice some of these pushchairs feature eco fabrics made from recycled PET plastic bottles, which divert waste from landfills and oceans. These sustainable elements are very high on the list for a growing number of eco conscious parents and will definitely play a part in their final decision-making.
Accessories
When buying a pushchair, there are several accessories that can enhance convenience, comfort, and functionality. Some are included in the price and some have to be bought separately, so be sure to check. Here are some useful accessories to consider:
Rain cover: Protects your baby from rain, wind, and snow and usually custom-fitted to specific pushchair models
Sunshade or UV cover: Shields your baby from harmful UV rays.
Cup holder: Holds beverages for parents or bottles for the baby. Some pushchairs come with built-in holders, while others offer detachable options.
Snack tray: Provides a surface for your child to keep snacks and drinks. Often includes compartments for easy access.
How much should you spend on a pram or pushchair?
Price point
How much you spend depends on the quality and range of features that you're looking for.
Budget prams: £50 to £200
These are basic models with essentials features such as harness and under basket storage. They do the job without breaking the bank, however they're probably more suitable for occasional use.
Mid-range prams: £200 to £600
Often a better build quality with a more robust frame, these also come with better features such as larger storage space, adjustable handle bars and a better fold system. These are often ideal for everyday use, and also include travel systems.
High-end prams: £600 to £1,200+
These prams and pushchairs often offer more premium materials, advanced suspensions systems as well as a variety of accessories, such as foot muffs, cup holders and sometimes a matching baby bag. They also offer a lot more comfort and durability, and are also quite stylish and streamlined.
Second hand prams: By carefully inspecting and considering the following factors, you can safely use a second-hand pram and potentially save money.
• Ensure the pram meets current safety standards. Check for recalls on the model you are considering.
• Inspect the pram for any damage, such as cracks, fraying straps, or broken parts. Make sure all the mechanisms, like brakes and folding parts, work properly.
• Clean the pram thoroughly before use to remove any dirt, dust, or bacteria. This is particularly important for parts that come into contact with your baby.
• Consider the age of the pram. Newer models often have updated safety features. Excessive wear and tear might compromise safety.
• If possible, get the user manual. This can help you understand how to properly use and maintain the pram.
• Make sure the pram is comfortable for your baby and fits their needs, such as the appropriate size and support for their age.
