Testing the BM01

More and more parents are turning to WiFi-free tech and when it comes to monitoring your baby’s safety and well-being, the Momcozy 1080P Video Baby Monitor offers the ideal balance of technology and practicality.

You can either attach the camera to the included wall mount or simply stand it somewhere safe where the baby can’t reach the wire.

The monitor comes with a portable parent unit with a 5-inch display, making it easy to carry around and keep an eye on your little one. It also has a flip-out stand should you wish to prop it on a table or other surface. The absence of WiFi ensures enhanced security, preventing potential hacking risks associated with internet-connected devices.

I’ve encountered a lot of parenting tech that is a faff to set up and use but there are none of these issues with the BM01. Well-suited for parents looking for ease of use, the user-friendly setup requires no complicated connections or apps. You simply charge up the parent unit, plug in the camera and switch both on. In less than 5 seconds, the two ‘find’ each other and hey presto, you are watching through the camera.

The monitor provides a 1080P high-definition video feed that allowed us to see every detail of our baby’s environment in real-time. We were so impressed with the clarity of the video although naturally the closer you zoom, the poorer the image quality. The 360-degree field of view means you can have a panoramic vision of your baby although you shouldn't need to use this much if just watching your baby sleep in their cot - unless you have a wiggler that is!

Accessing the settings of the monitor is as simple as setting it up and all done through the parent unit. From here you can change the date, time and language, access the factory settings, play lullabies and more.

The monitor has a two-way audio system which meant we could talk to and soothe our son from another room if we wished. While we didn’t personally use this feature to talk to Theodore as it wasn’t necessary, we enjoyed hearing his little sounds.

The built-in temperature monitoring helps ensure your baby’s room is always at a comfortable level, while the automatic night vision guarantees a clear view even in low-light conditions. The lullabies are a nice touch although many of these are quite short and we personally preferred using our own white noise bear which we have used since our son was born.

The monitor has a reasonable battery life and we found it to be true to Momcozy’s claims of lasting around 11 hours when the display is on and the voice is off. There are ways to extend this, e.g having the display off, but this feels rather pointless in my opinion. You can also adjust the settings so that when your baby gets fussy or cries, you will hear instantly and the screen will automatically light up with the VOX function on. Would I like a longer battery life so I’m not charging the monitor several times a week? Absolutely, but it’s manageable.

The range works well for us and we had no problem using it throughout our townhouse without faltering. While this does mean you wouldn’t be able to check in on baby if you were out on a rare dare night when the grandparents are babysitting, this is to be expected when there’s no WiFi involved. For us personally, this wasn’t a problem but the more nervous parents might prefer a monitor with an app.

Final verdict

Right from setting up the BM01, I knew I was going to like it. Every part of using the baby monitor is just so simple and that’s a huge positive for a parent like myself with a busy brain. The large parent unit is really impressive and I like how easy it is to pan round and zoom in to see my son, especially handy when he’s being particularly wiggly! It's really helpful that you can purchase an extra camera if you went on to have another child as the monitor can be used as a split screen for up to four cameras.

I personally didn’t find it to be a negative that I couldn’t access the monitor while out of the house if someone else was babysitting, as we felt comfortable that those caring for our child had everything under control and didn’t feel the need to check in. And after all, it did us some good to ‘switch off’ for a little while.

Costing £159.99, the monitor sits in the middle of the market. Other similar models offer a few more features such as a nightlight and projections and cost less so I do think the BM01 would benefit from a cheaper price point. That said, I’ve found it a really reliable product that I would recommend to any parent seeking a non-Wifi baby monitor.
