Testing the VTech RM7764HD

The setup was very quick and straightforward which was a relief as we wanted something that we could basically get straight out of the box and use. We set up the camera and used it for our six-month-old's nap straight away. We were so impressed with the picture quality and that both my husband and I could check in on the app. It looks great, as well as performing really well and we've come to really rely on the quality of it.

The screen is a great size, we mostly used the screen during the night and our phones to check in on the app during the day whilst pottering around the house instead of having to carry the screen around. We didn't use the noises (birds tweeting, crickets...) as we rely on white noise to help her sleep so these would've been distracting and seemed more like an extra gimmick than a necessity.

On the plus side, the temperature gauge was really accurate and was very helpful during a previous heatwave, and the app gives a more specific decimal reading so we could tell if it was getting cooler or not and could open the windows or door. It was useful being able to set a temperature maximum and getting an alert for this, I didn't think we'd use this feature as our house stays quite cool but recently in the 35+ weather, our daughter's room got up to 28 whilst she was asleep and I'm really glad we knew as we could go in to help cool it down and change what she was wearing.

We recently used our previous monitor (a very popular model on the market without an app feature) and were surprised at the difference in picture quality when comparing them side by side, little things that reassure you like clearly seeing her breathing and shuffling around are so helpful to anxious first-time parents!

I found it really helpful to be able to change the colour and dim/switch off the nightlight on the camera. Our previous monitor had an amber light all the time which our baby used to stare at, but we were able to switch this one off or if we needed to pop into the room whilst she was sleeping, we could remotely switch it on on a low dim to check in on her and leave again.

Final thoughts

There isn't really anything I wish this monitor did that it doesn't already do and I'm not sure how I would improve it. We live in an old house with thick stone walls so I was worried about the connection but it changes between wifi and a direct connection to the monitor (whichever is stronger) which is great.

Sometimes the app can take a little while to connect and update the image which is sometimes a little frustrating, and there is a feature to have full-colour night vision which doesn't seem to work unless there is a little bit of light in the room, so it wasn't something that worked for us.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the RM7764HD, and if something happened to this monitor or we had another baby and needed another, we wouldn't think twice about buying another.
