Testing the VTech RM7766HD
This VTECH baby monitor was very easy to set up. I liked how it pairs with both the handheld parent unit as well as with the smartphone app. The connection is reliable with options of connecting via wifi and offline.
We used the product with our three-month-old baby, who at the time of testing, was sleeping in our bedroom. It was mainly used after baby fell asleep in the evening before we went to bed and when using the shower before baby woke up. It gave us reassurance that baby was well whilst not having to disturb his sleep. This was enhanced by being able to actually see baby breathing on the camera. We left the camera on all night to make use of the nightlight feature, including the variable brightness. This enabled us to check on him if he was disturbed in the night as well as change and feed him without turning on a brighter light. This helped me to get back to sleep again more easily after night feeds and helped my partner to stay asleep.
The camera has a wide-angle lens and you can see the whole of the bedroom (we mounted it on the wall). It has an excellent zoom function and when moving the camera it is quite quiet. The pictures on both the parent unit and in the app are very clear, especially during daylight, and even at night, you can see the baby breathing.
The nightlight has multiple modes/colours and brightnesses. The light is of a calming quality that made it easy to sleep in the same room whilst it was on. The multiple brightnesses meant I could increase it to be able to change and feed baby and then reduce it again for sleep.
The ability to use the parent unit and/or the app gives flexibility (it was easier to carry my phone around in my pocket or use it whilst in the bathroom). The picture was bigger on the parent unit which was so useful when sitting on the sofa in the evening. The range on the parent unit is great; it even worked at the bottom of our garden! The temperature reading was accurate and useful.
Final thoughts
Overall this is an excellent baby monitor with many features. Whilst it is fairly expensive, you do get a lot for your money and I would definitely recommend it. It has an easy-to-use parent unit and app and a pleasant nightlight with variable brightness and various colours. I liked the ability to see the temperature and capture pictures/ video of my baby. It has excellent zoom and range plus a clear picture and the ability to talk to baby and play sounds.
For us, the cons we noticed were that motion and sound detection were a bit too sensitive. It picked up noise downstairs which meant repeated notifications on my phone. I had to unplug the camera when not in use as the app would send multiple notifications, even if I had not opened it on my phone.
It's worth mentioning that only one person can be connected to the app at once. We found that my partner became disconnected when I logged on and needed a QR code to reconnect. If he was wanting to use at work, we would have to plan in advance.
