Step 2 Crabbie Sandbox

Suitable from 12 months, this holds lots of sand and includes a weatherproof cover. The front claws and back legs act as seats, leaving lots of room for burying toes and building sandcastles.

All the children loved this one, but our testers felt other sandpits offered better value for money.

Tested by Leanne, 32, mum to Darcie, 18 months, and Harrison, five. She says:

I have mixed feelings about this one: it looks really good, holds lots of sand and feels well made and not at all flimsy, unlike some of the other sandpits tested.

But it takes up a considerable amount of patio space and doesn’t offer great value for money. It’s expensive, and there’s nothing to hold the lid in position, which is an oversight.

Tested by Sarah, 33, mum to Emma, two, and Daniel, three, and expecting her third baby. She says:

Super-quick to set up – just pour in the sand and you're ready to play – and it has a lovely large play area that holds lots of sand.

It’s watertight and the lid stays put. The children loved sitting on the claws to bury their feet, but this one seems overpriced compared to another similar design we tested. But aside from that, it gets full marks.

Tested by Jayne, 37, mum to Lily, two, Oliver, nine, and Charlotte, 10. She says:

Beautiful, bright and cheery – Lily’s eyes were like saucers when she saw this! It’s ideal for sharing with siblings or playing in with friends. However, this means it takes up considerable space and requires lots of sand to fill it.

I love it, but the cost is really hard to justify – the Little Tikes Turtle offers a very similar option for a fraction of the price.
