Testing the Avionaut Cosmo 2.0

What I love about Avionaut car seats is that even though they're made of high-quality materials and meet the highest safety standards, they're so lightweight. The Cosmo isn't as light as the Pixel PRO (read our full Pixel PRO 2.0 review here), but it's still a meagre 3.2kg, making it a delight to transport. Once you've experienced a car seat so easy to manoeuvre and carry around, it's hard to imagine using anything else.

I really like the look and feel of this car seat, specifically the breathable, skin-friendly upholstery, protective canopy, and sleek main body build. There are six attractive colours to choose from, and it comes with a clever insert to ensure your baby sits in an ergonomic position.

The Cosmo 2.0 can be fitted using seatbelts or the IQ 2.0 Isofix base (sold separately), giving you the option to do what's best for your family. The base is heavy, but it easily slots into the Isofix fixing points in my car and has a succinct light and sound signal to let you know if it's installed properly. It couldn't be simpler to line up the seat, click it into place and check the indicator, and certainly makes life easier than using the seatbelt each time. Unlatching the seat is also simple, thanks to the clear grey lever at the front.

The innovative insert has been developed in partnership with physiotherapists to take care of the baby's back and ensure the healthy development of their spine. It isn't quite as comprehensive as the Pixel PRO's insert, which has more individual elements, but it offers newborns a comfortable, cosy and supportive fit compared to others on the market.

My newborn sits snugly in the car seat and looks very comfortable, snoozing happily on most journeys. The covered button to release the harness straps is easy to use, and the belts are tightened by pulling the remaining strap at the bottom of the seat. The only minor negatives are that the buckle button is quite stiff, so requires a bit of force to release the straps, and the clip is a bit fiddly to use. I can imagine it being quite frustrating with a wriggly child. I'm hoping that the buckle will loosen up a bit over time, and muscle memory will help me grasp putting the clips together efficiently.

Final verdict

If you're looking for a car seat that will provide a comfortable fit for your baby, plus make life easier when you're out and about, all for a reasonable price, the lightweight Cosmo 2.0 is a brilliant option. It fits into the Isofix base with ease or can be used with a seatbelt (the money-saving option), and the light and sound system takes the guesswork out of knowing if it's fitted correctly.

The upholstery is lovely, the smooth, UV-safe canopy keeps your baby safe from the sun and the insert gives you peace of mind that you're getting a great fit to keep baby feeling snug and also support their spine health.

It will only last until your child is around 18 months old (13kg/87cm), but it's at a great price point compared to similar, lightweight options on the market.
