Testing the Axkid One 3
As new parents to our 7 month old girl, car seat safety, convenience and practicality are of primary concern. The Axkid One 3 car seat aims to satisfy these requirements and more. With unique rear-facing capability for children up to 23kg/125cm, the One 3 promises to be a potentially invaluable option for busy parents looking for a long-term solution.
We were drawn to the Axkid One 3 because of it’s Swedish Plus Test rating for car seat safety, along with the ‘30 second installation guarantee’. The balance of safety and convenience was paramount for us when considering our options.
Build
The seat is so quick and easy to install. 30 seconds is a push, but within just 2 minutes I had been able to set up the seat in the correct way for our baby’s size and install into the back of our 4x4. That said, the seat is bulky and cumbersome when manoeuvring and finding the best position in the car. It is not heavy, just bulky and awkward to hold.
Multiple adjustments are available, including the 5-point harness, rebound bar position, legroom, headrest, and reclining angle. This allows for many adjustments to provide the perfect fit. We particularly liked this and the flexibility of the seat compared to others we have tried.
The liner inserts provided add another layer of adaptability to encourage a snug fit from birth onwards. We found that the newborn liner was still useful for our baby even at 7 months old, and the build quality of all removable parts feels outstanding. I have no doubt this seat will last our family a very long time.
Usability
Despite the seat not having a 360 base, the built-in ISOFIX base keeps life simple when swapping seats between cars regularly, as we do. A simple click-in/out system allows you to quickly remove the seat, and making adjustments as described previously is very easy when changing cars.
Putting baby into the car seat as she grows will be challenging. The lack of 360 spin makes it an awkward manoeuvre to lift growing children into the car seat, particularly due to limited legroom with the rear facing aspect.
The removable liner is machine washable and feels like a tough fabric – very important for keeping up with messy children.
Performance
We certainly felt our baby was safe once in the car seat, and after the first few days, we worked out how best to lift her in and out with minimal fuss. Do be aware however that this was fitted in our large 4x4, and yet legroom and space was still limited. I'd advise checking the Axkid website for information on compatible cars. With the above in mind, I expect we will be using the car seat for at least 3-4 years before potentially upgrading when our little one is bigger.
Final verdict
The Axkid One 3 is an extremely well-built car seat best suited to those looking to prioritise safety and practicality. The 7 year lifespan of this seat is excellent and completely unique to this brand and model. We have not come across any other comparative options offering the same suitability.
We loved the multiple adjustment points available, and felt full trust in the car seat to perform as needed.
We didn’t love the lack of a 360 spin option, which would be highly beneficial as our daughter continues to grow.
On the whole, an extremely well designed/built piece of equipment with many safety-related pros, with some limitations relating to usability as baby grows.
