best toddler puddlesuits

Toddlers are drawn to muddy puddles which is fun for them, but as parents, we struggle to keep them warm and dry! Even the best winter coats for children only do a good job of keeping their upper body dry, but with the best toddler puddlesuits, you'll never have to worry about soggy trousers again.

After a rainy day, you might dread heading out of the house on a walk because you know your child will want to splash in every puddle they see, but that's not the problem, after all, it is great to see our little ones having fun. The problem is you know they'll end up with wet clothes, and unless they have a good pair toddler of wellies on, wet socks too, which, when they have finished puddle jumping, will cause upset and moaning.

However, with a good toddler puddlesuit, you won't have to worry about wet clothes or your child complaining about their wet clothes. Like a footless baby grow, a puddlesuit is made from waterproof material to keep your little one fully dry and they can wear it over their clothes for full body coverage, which paired with a great pair of toddler wellies means they can have as much puddle splashing fun as they want.

Our favourite toddler puddlesuits shortlist 2023:

Forest Leader Insulated PU Splashsuit: Buy here at Spotty Otter
EcoLight Puddle Suit: Buy here at Kidly
Waterproof Shell Fleece Lined Overall: Buy here at Polarn O Pyret

You can get puddlesuits that are thin enough for summer and even fleece-lined ones for winter. Some even come with hoods attached and foot-loops to prevent the legs rolling up, and most are machine washable. A toddler puddlesuit really does add to the fun of puddle-splashing and rainy day walks, which means you can let your toddler play in even the muddiest puddle, and going out in the rain is much more comfortable, for your little one at least. Below we have selected some great puddlesuits we think you will love!

Review: "Beautiful print, excellent quality and fit, very warm with fleece layer on top and double waterproof layer at the bottom. The zip is well-made too. My son was wearing it for a couple of months now, still looks like new. I bought one size up, thinking of double or triple layering for colder weather, but I could’ve gone for the true to age size - there’s plenty of room even for slightly bigger kids. Trespass is a well-known brand when it comes to adults' outdoors clothing and equipment, so it makes sense that their children's gear is quality too. The Waterproof Drip Drop Outdoor Rain Suit is available in a range of bright colours and is fleece-lined, with elasticated cuffs and ankles.

Our review: "I bought this for my son Eli, who's three, when we arrived on holiday in Wales earlier this year to realise a) it would be raining every day and b) someone had forgotten to pack his existing puddlesuit. We tried going for a walk with Eli in just a coat, but it only lasted half an hour before he looked like a drowned rat. I immediately logged on to the internet and found this on Amazon, and luckily it could be delivered the next day - which was an absolute must. It's warm with the fleece lining, as well as keeping him nicely dry underneath; the elasticated cuffs and ankles are essential for keeping tight around wellies and gloves to keep as much rainwater out as possible."

Does my child need a puddlesuit?

It might seem like an extra thing to buy when your child already has a coat, but puddlesuits are great for young children. The full-length suits help to protect little ones' legs, body, arms and heads from the wet weather. You can buy waterproof trousers for your little one and pair them with a waterproof coat, but by buying a puddlesuit you only need to remember one piece of outdoor wear on busy days out!

Even if they aren't splashing in puddles, it will help to keep their clothes dry. If your child sits on wet surfaces too, it'll help to keep their bottom dry.

What do you wear under a puddlesuit?

It depends on the season but your little one can wear their normal toddler outfits under a puddlesuit. During the summer something cool like a t-shirt will be ideal, while during the colder months, you can layer your little one up with a t-shirt and jumper and pull the puddle suit on over the top.

Do puddlesuits go inside or outside wellies?

If the puddlesuit has stirrups then it is best to pull the trousers over the wellies and use the stirrup to keep them in place. This will stop dirt and water from getting into your little one's wellies and making them uncomfortable, or ruining their best socks! If the puddlesuit doesn't fit over the wellies, maybe it has elasticated ankle cuffs, or no stirrups, then you can pull the wellies over the puddlesuit and it will still protect your little one as they have fun jumping in puddles.
