Why holidaying in the great outdoors is good for children’s mental health
Psychologist Marianne Trent and Jerry Rebbeck from Wheelwrights share how outdoor holidays can really help with kids’ mental health. With autumn on the way, it’s a great time to encourage your children to spend more time outside. Not only does outdoor play get them moving, but it also sparks their imaginations and helps reduce stress.
Taking a holiday in one of the UK’s beautiful national parks, like the Lake District, is a fantastic way for families to reconnect with nature. It gives everyone a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, which can improve both mental and physical health. While these trips are great for adults, they’re especially beneficial for kids!
1. Encourage movement to reduce stress
“Playing outside naturally gets kids moving, which is really important for their health. This movement releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones, and helps reduce stress. Activities like running, climbing, and just playing in nature can boost their mood, help them focus, and lessen anxiety,” says Marianne.
“If you have particularly energetic little ones, look out for holiday cottages with gardens and outdoor spaces, so even if you fancy a morning in with a cup of tea, you can still send them out into the outdoors!” suggests Jerry.
2. Helps with creativity and imagination
“Nature offers endless possibilities for creative play. Sticks and branches can become houses, bugs can be the audience, and mud can turn into hot chocolate! Being playful and creative helps kids use different parts of their brains, which is important for their growth and emotional development,” explains Marianne.
3. Exposure to awe
“Experiencing awe is really important for our well-being, and it’s easy to feel amazed when you’re outdoors. Whether it’s tall trees or stunning sunsets, kids who experience these awe-inspiring moments can gain lasting benefits for their development and happiness. Awe can also boost creativity, improve emotional health, and foster kindness in kids,” Marianne shares.
“When choosing a UK holiday destination, look for places that can provide your child with those awe moments. For example, Grizedale Forest in the Lake District has endless trails and fun sculptures for kids to explore. The beautiful views in Langdale Valley are also sure to leave them in awe,” Jerry recommends.
4. Help manage symptoms of ADHD
“Studies suggest that kids with ADHD can benefit even more from being in nature. The natural world gives them a great way to use their energy, helps them focus, and can even improve their impulse control. With all the screens around us, nature offers a calm and focused alternative,” Marianne says.
5. Provide a sense of mastery
“Doing activities like hiking, trekking, or trying out water sports can really boost kids’ confidence and give them a sense of accomplishment. These experiences help them learn problem-solving skills and build resilience, which are super important for their growth,” Marianne explains.
“The UK has amazing national parks that are perfect for introducing kids to fun and adventurous activities. Look for family-friendly hikes and water sports, as many local clubs offer weekend and holiday programs,” Jerry adds.
