Testing the Clair de Lune wicker Moses basket

First impressions, the moses basket arrived all made up with the sage lining and cover on the mattress – literally take it out of the plastic bag and it’s ready to use. I love the quality of the sage lining in particular, it’s got cream piping along the edge, the bows tied neatly along the rim of the Moses basket and it feels lovely and soft.

The mattress has a bamboo pattern on it and is firm yet comfortable, it’s nice and thin and fits snugly in the base of the moses basket. The cream cover did seem a little baggy on the mattress but it makes it easier to put on, and it’s great that the mattress cover comes included as this is often an additional purchase.

The mattress cover is really easy to wash, and while I’ve only had to spot clean the Moses basket cover, it is also machine washable. A matress protector cover doesn’t come with it, but is available to buy for only £4.99 from Clair de Lune, which I thought was a pretty good price, and you can also get them in a bundle with some extra sheets too.

clair de lune assembly step 1
©MOTHER&BABY

I ordered the rocking stand along with the moses basket, so there was some assembly required for this. I decided to give it a go myself, it comes with all the screws you need, you simply need to have a Phillips screwdriver.

Assembly was ok, I think I could have done with someone holding it steady for me when I got to the second step as it was hard to keep the cross dowels into the recesses and get the screw in to secure these at the same time. I managed though, so solo assembly is doable!

I did have to attach the flexible straps as the first time there was far too much room for the Moses basket. It might be worth adding a guide for which size matches which Moses basket, but I appreciate that as they’re made to order out of natural products a guide like this would not be 100 per cent accurate.

Once it was all set up it was easy to fit the moses basket into the top – I made sure the fit was snug. It doesn’t rock much, but it’s enough to give it a bit of movement if baby is grizzly, it doesn’t creak or squeak at all.

The finish of the wood is lovely, unvarnished and natural, and actually I think it looks nicer in person than the pictures I’d seen on the website! The adjustable straps are plastic but they’ve been made a natural colour that blends in with the wicker so you don’t really notice them too much.

My favourite thing about this moses basket are the natural materials, the wicker is beautiful, naturally varnished, and crafted into a lovely pattern that also offers breathability. The fabrics are also all organic and sustainably sourced materials. I think this moses basket is a brilliant combination of traditional skills and modern aesthetic.

Size-wise the stand is a little shorter than I’d expected it to be, but it’s high enough to not have to bend over too much when putting baby in and taking them out, and it’s a good height for when I’m sat on the sofa to keep an eye on baby.

I’ve used the moses basket both upstairs as a safe place to lay baby down while I get dressed, but mostly use it downstairs. I have a dog so I prefer my baby to be out of their reach when they’re trying to nap, as otherwise they just get lots of licks! It’s very lightweight and easy to carry, although it is easier to transport up and down the stairs in two parts.

It tends to live in the living room, but it is compact enough that it doesn’t feel in the way at all. Clair de Lune do also have a folding stand if you were more conscious of the space you have available, but honestly our living room isn’t large, this just lives by the window and it doesn’t feel out of place at all, it’s become just another piece of furniture. We’ve not had to do so yet, but I also think it would be easy enough to take to the grandparents if needed, minus the stand, as a place for baby to nap.

Final thoughts

I would definitely recommend this moses basket, or indeed any from Clair de Lune, I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the product, and I think for the price it’s very fair as well. The fact that the materials are organic, from the wicker basket to the fabrics that line it just adds to the high standard of this product for me.

Having somewhere safe and secure to lay baby down for naps when we’re downstairs is a game-changer, and gives me peace of mind that baby is nearby when I’m pottering around downstairs trying to tick off jobs around the house, I can pop my head in without having to go up and down stairs, or needing to have my baby monitor on non-stop. For me as a pet owner, a baby swing is too accessible, so the fact that this is that bit higher makes it an essential for us.
