Testing the Stokke Sleep Mini Bed V3

The Stokke Sleepi Bed is one of those baby products that everyone recognises at first sight thanks to its signature oval shape and cosy, nest-like feel. As a result, it was high on my wish list when I became pregnant with my first baby.

Comparing the Stokke Sleepi Mini and Sleep Bed

You have two options when it comes to buying the Stokke Sleepi. The Stokke Sleepi Mini Cot Bed and Sleepi Bed V3 are both designed with flexibility in mind, but they cater to slightly different needs. The Sleepi Mini Cot Bed is ideal for newborns and infants up to six months. Its compact size provides a snug environment that helps soothe newborns, and with its breathable design, it promotes healthy airflow around little ones during sleep.

On the other hand, the Stokke Sleepi Bed starts as a crib and extends the usability of the Mini by growing with the child up to five years old. The Sleepi Bed offers four adjustable mattress heights and can transform into a toddler bed, providing excellent value for long-term use as well as offering a smooth transition as the baby grows into early childhood.

Both models are made from sustainable beechwood and are Greenguard Gold certified, ensuring low chemical emissions for a safer sleep environment. There are numerous different accessories you can purchase additionally  for the Stokke Sleepi including an internal mesh lining that helps keep your babies arms and legs inside the cot and a drape rod plus light, transparent canopy. However it’s worth keeping in mind safe sleep recommendations which advise keeping baby’s cot clear.

Assembly

The assembly of the Stokke Sleepi Mini cot was very simple. The curved cot sides are joined by an angled piece of wood on either end and a few screw-in fixings. The brackets for the base can then be attached and the base sits on top and is secured with a few more screws. You can then attach the wheels should you wish.

Design

Like the Sleepi Bed, the Sleepy Mini features a sleek, modern design with an oval shape that provides a cosy, enclosed space for newborns. The cot's minimalist look is enhanced by its sustainable beechwood construction, giving it both durability and aesthetic appeal. Designed to promote airflow, the cot ensures your baby sleeps comfortably and safely. I really feel like the timeless design would seamlessly blend into any nursery, no matter what theme. The cot comes with lockable swivel wheels, allowing for easy movement between rooms and can also be used to help rock your little one to help them fall asleep.

As a parent, you tend to look for products that will last with your child as they grow. But the downside to this when it comes to cots is that your tiny baby usually looks a bit lost. After 9 months in the womb, it’s understandable that infants naturally favourite small, cosy spaces. This was why both Theodore and I loved the size of Sleepi Mini. He had plenty of room to stretch in the crib yet not too much that the space felt unsettling to him. We actually tried our son in the full-size Sleepi Bed when he was a newborn and it just felt too vast, so I loved having the option of the Mini, especially with a young baby. The compact size also makes it perfect for those working with a smaller space in their home.

Price

The Stokke Sleepi Mini is positioned in the market as a premium product with a price that reflects its high-quality craftsmanship and adaptability. While the base cost covers the cot itself, it comes with additional expenses, particularly for mattresses. The Sleepi Mini requires a specific mattress, which is sold separately, adding to the overall cost. Additionally, as your baby grows and should you convert the Mini into the larger Sleepi Bed, you’ll need to purchase an extension kit and a larger mattress. As the bed is a unique shape, you’ll also require specific sheets which are not as widely available as your standard cot sheets. While these add-ons ensure longevity, they do increase the total investment significantly.

Converting the Sleepi Mini

To convert the Stokke Sleepi Mini Cot into the larger Sleepi Bed, you'll need the Sleepi Bed Extension Kit. With this, you remove the side panels and mattress from the Mini then attach the extension parts from the kit to expand the crib frame, and adjust the bed base to one of the four height settings. Finally, you pop in the larger mattress to complete the transition. This setup allows the bed to accommodate children up to five years old.

Final verdict

While my husband and I loved the aesthetic and compactness of the Sleepi Mini, the fact that it’s only suitable up to six months without the extension kit makes it a rather expensive product with limited use.

Although the Mini excels in portability and newborn comfort, you would need to purchase the additional extension kit (costing £282) to be able to use it up to five years. This would make the total cost (not including mattresses) £617 compared to the Sleepi Bed alone which costs £563.

For those looking for a seamless transition from infant to toddler, the Sleepi Bed does seem to be the better investment. However, while you could of course use the Sleepi Bed from birth if you chose to, I don’t think many babies would enjoy being in such a large space and this could actually impact their sleep. So I do believe it’s worth starting with the Sleepi Mini and purchasing the additional extension kit on top. Although more expensive than going straight for the Sleepi Bed, it’s still works out to be a cheaper option than buying a next-to-me crib or bedside crib as well as a cot once baby reaches six months. There's also the benefit of baby staying in the same bed for up to five years, helping keep their environment familiar.

If you have the budget and are looking to invest in your baby products and go onto use them with future babies, the Stokke Sleepi Mini is a great place to start, offering longevity, style and substance.
