Testing the Obaby Reclining Glider Nursing Chair

As a first time Mum to my little girl Margot, it is essential to have a calm space within our home where we can both relax and unwind together. Margot is 6 months old now and enjoys a story before drifting off to sleep at night. My partner and I were able to test this chair and stool during our nighttime routine with our daughter. After trying a couple of alternative nursing chairs without foot stools which quickly became uncomfortable particularly around our back, we were looking for a chair and stool combination that would provide a comfortable and supportive space to unwind for the evening.

This product lends itself to mums who are looking for a comfortable solution for nighttime feeds and cuddles. I would also recommend it to pregnant mothers as a comfortable place to take the weight off your feet and rest. Due to its dimensions, the chair and stool also fit nicely into most reasonable sized nurseries, not taking up too much space for your other essentials.

We assembled the chair and stool following the instruction manual provided. However we found that this was not clear enough, particularly when trying to attach the arm cover cushions. The poppers did not easily attach to the chair as it was not clear enough how to attach them or even where to attach them.

Putting the arms onto the chair was also challenging as the nuts were a different height to the bolt which meant they did not come together well.

With the various reclining positions available with this chair, we expected it to be easy to find a comfortable and relaxing position to settle Margot and read her a story before bed. This is particularly important for us. Ensuring Margot is relaxed ready for her night’s sleep is imperative towards the quality of sleep we all get. However, we found the chair difficult to lock into your chosen reclined position and the arms felt flimsy and were very easily moved and manipulated out of position.

We found the gliding motion to be particularly soothing and relaxing for both us and baby. The foot stool is a great addition to the chair, allowing us to have that all important time to put our feet up. The cushioning material was especially supportive around our backs where we had previously felt discomfort after a short while in alternative nursing chairs. The product was well packaged, there was no damage upon arrival. The cushions are also very comfortable and an easily wipeable material.

The handy side pocket was excellent to keep essentials close by such as a muslin and comforter and a place to put a bottle when feeding had finished. We found this to be a good space saving solution, meaning there was no need for a side table or to clutter the windowsill.

The design of the chair means that you can see the mechanisms which we found to not be as aesthetically pleasing as other chairs. However, this was easily overlooked by the level of comfort it provided. The white colour of the wood meant that it matched perfectly with our neutral colour scheme as well as the light grey colour of the cushions.

Final verdict

We felt this chair was not particularly good value for money due to the product lacking durability and ease of use. However, the comfort the stool and chair combination provide as well as the space saving quality of the side pockets are definite positive factors. The product provides everything you need in one. The chair and stool combination create a very comfortable space for relaxing and soothing your baby which is the products core function. We would suggest adding more material to cover the mechanisms of the chair and make it slightly more aesthetically pleasing when compared to other nursing chairs on the market. Furthermore, the attachment of the arm cushions needs to be clearer and easier as we were not able to do this. Lastly the usability of the reclining feature would need to improve.
