When it comes to changing your baby on a changing mat, there comes a time when they start to roll over or even start to wiggle away from you, turning what would normally be a few minutes nappy change into a longer struggle, so you best believe when I heard about the Turning Tot changing mat I needed to know more.

The Turning Tot is designed to give parents and carers the freedom and confidence to go out and about knowing that they can change the baby in the most stress-free way possible.

With plenty of anti-roll changing mats available on the market, I was curious to see how the Turning Tot Changing Mat was different to all these.

Thoroughly safety tested, it’s cushioned for comfort, durable, easy to clean, and has tactile features to keep little hands busy while they are having a change.  The mat is lightweight and perfect for use on the go as it can be rolled or folded to pop in a change bag. It also features a useful pocket for wipes and spare nappies.

Pros

  • It helps keeps children secure
  • Suitable to use from 6 months to 2 years
  • Makes changing time easier

Cons

  • Might not be suitable for everyone

Testing the Turning Tot Changing Mat

As a mum who's been through the wiggly-stage of nappy changes before, I knew all too well what to expect the second time! I was really curious to see if the Turning Tot Changing Mat would help make those nappy changes easier, especially when juggling two children.

Build

When the changing mat arrived I was really impressed with the thickness and the overall size of the mat! Portable changing mats can often feel smaller, and a little flimsy, but this was a really big size, and is perfect for changing bigger babies.

The Velcro is really strong too, so it doesn't pull away easy. The only issue with this is it does trap fluff a lot easier and it's much harder to clean.

Usability

I loved how practical the changing mat was, with space to store nappies, wipes and bags in the pockets of the changing mat, as well as its compact fold. It could be a little large for smaller changing bags if you were to take it on the go, but you could easily just pop it in a shopper bag or under the pram if you needed too.

Aside from the fluff getting trapped in the Velcro, it's super easy to keep it clean and we found it doesn't stain easily as well! A previous portable changing mat we had, we did end up binning after a few weeks due to the fact the material stained so easily, but we haven't had this issue with the Turning Tot mat.

Performance

In terms of a changing mat, it really does do everything you need it to do, whilst also helping to keep your little one secure. The straps are large and soft, and don't dig into skin and there's no worry of it being a hazard due to the size of them. They're really easy to adjust too, so you can have them slightly looser if you needed, and it allows for your little one to grow.

I liked that the straps came across the tummy and the shoulders, as they gave similar support like a baby carrier would, and helped prevent wiggling down the mat too.

Final verdict

Overall, I was incredibly impressed with this changing mat! It's such a simple yet effective design, and even if you don't want to use the straps to secure your wiggly little one when changing them, it's a really good size for changing your child as they get older - so there's no worry of them outgrowing the mat!

At first glance you might think it's a bit pricey for a baby changing mat, however, it's just as effective, if not more so, than your standard changing mats! The big plus to the Turning Tot changing mat is that you can fold it up to take on the go with you too. I would highly recommend it.

Turning Tot Changing Mat FAQs

What is the Turning Tot Changing Mat?

When the founder of Turning Tot's son turned five months old, she also found that it was a constant battle with his rolling and turning, which she also found exhausting, and that she would limit where she would go unless there was help from family or friends.

When her mum expressed a similar strain on changing duties when caring for him, they began searching for a solution to help parents, grandparents, and other childcare providers.

When they couldn’t find anything suitable, they put their heads together and spent three and a half years refining the idea into the Turning Tot Changing Mat: a portable anti-roll changing mat that is a total game changer for keeping those wriggly babies still.

What age is the Turning Tot Changing Mat suitable for?

Suitable for use from six months to two years, it’s so simple to use. It features a unique bamboo insert that stops the rolling and a bodice with Velcro fastenings to keep little ones safely in one place.
