The best pram hand muffs to keep you warm during winter

When it's cold outside, pushing a pram or buggy means your hands turn to ice very quickly, so you might benefit from a pair of pram hand muffs. They help to keep those hands nice and toasty, and stop your fingers from turning blue as you’re pushing your newborn around the block for the third time in a day, trying to get them to drift off to sleep before you lose a finger to frostbite.

Just like buggy liners and sunshades, a pram hand muff is a useful accessory for your pushchair. It's basically a big glove that covers both your hands while you push your pram. It attaches to the handles of the pram and keeps you toasty warm. Once you’ve tried a hand muff in the depths of winter, you’ll wonder how you ever coped without one.

So, why not just wear gloves? Using pram hand muffs means your hands are instantly free to help baby, rather than wrestling to get gloves off to grab a dummy or wipe away a tear. Plus, you won’t lose your gloves on a walk when you’ve got a hand muff. (Top tip: they’re also pretty good for supermarket trolleys – but we can’t guarantee you won’t get a few funny looks).

Best sheepskin pram hand muffs

Looking for a muff alternative? These mittens from Stokke individually attach to your pushchair handle. They have super soft sheepskin trims and a fleece lining. They’re water repellent too, so your hands will stay dry if there’s a sudden shower. As they’re mittens, not a muff, they are a little more fiddly to get your hands out of than the others on our list, but not a lot. They are the most expensive on our list by far, but you are paying for real sheepskin - that's the big difference; one customer review said: "I bought them for my son and daughter-in-law! They are very happy with them."

These are a great investment if you have a Stokke stroller, as they’ll match well; indeed, if you have other Stokke products already, you’ll know how reliable the brand is and how they insist on high-quality materials. They’ll last for years, and you’ll be able to pass them on to family or friends once you’re past the pushchair stage. They fit Stokke strollers but also most other brands of pushchair, too.

The only downside is if you’re vegan, as these mittens are made from sheepskin.

Pros

  • They are PFC-free and water-repellent, keeping your hands dry
  • Made with high-quality materials offering comfort and warmth
  • These are individually attached to the stroller handle

Cons

  • Some parents may not feel comfortable with having real sheepskin trims
  • Slightly more fiddly to take your hands out than a muff
  • Sheepskin trim
  • Fleece lining
  • Water repellant

Best affordable pram hand muffs

A brand that we know and love, these Maxi-Cosi hand muffs are a winter must-have. There are separate slots for each hand, and the lining is soft and warm; one customer review said: "Omg so lovely and warm. I’m so pleased I purchased them."

This muff is easy to fit on to the handle of your pushchair; wrap it around and secure using the poppers; we found them easy to use, however some customer reviews said there were a few too many poppers which made it a little complicated to fit; one customer review said: “Keeps your hand warm! Love the idea downside there’s lots of press buttons it gets confusing! Keeps my hands warm and it’s soft inside - 10 out of 10!”

Pros

  • This muff can be machine-washed
  • The lining is warm and soft, providing comfort in colder weathers
  • Easily attached to the handle of your pram by wrapping around the securing the poppers

  • Check compatibility with your pushchair if it's not Maxi-Cosi
  • Machine washable
  • One-size fits all

Best pram mittens with poppers

This pushchair muff is one of the cheapest we’ve tested, and it’s definitely value for money. The muff attaches to your stroller with poppers, and it’s universal so fits all brands of pram and pushchair. The lining is made from extra-thick fleece, meaning your hands will stay warm throughout a long winter walk; plus, the outer material is waterproof so it’s ideal for rainy days too; one customer review said: "I absolutely love these especially for the price. I have a single handlebar pushchair and a double handle stroller and they work perfectly with both! Lovely and cosy too! So happy I don’t have to keep fiddling around taking gloves on and off all the time on a walk."

The only real downside to this muff is that the fleecy lining might be too thick – beware a sweaty hot hand. They’re a one-size-fits-all design, meaning no adjustment is needed if other people take baby for a walk; one dad reviewer said: “Bought as a present for my wife and she's very happy with them. Easy to fit and nice and warm/soft inside. We just leave them on the pram, makes life easy, just have to be a bit careful when folding it down for the car. I have big hands and can use them too.”

You can buy a larger size, which might be suitable if you’re in extremely cold climates and need to wear gloves inside the muff.

Pros

  • They offer a universal fit for all pushchairs, prams and strollers
  • One of the cheapest muffs we've tested
  • Available in two sizes

Cons

  • Double lining might be too warm for some
  • Waterproof outer layer
  • Double fleece lining

FAQs

How can I keep my baby warm in the pram during winter?

As well as looking for ways to keep yourself warm during those frosty, cold weather walks, you need to make sure your baby stays nice and toasty inside their pram. Here are some tips, with a little help from NCT, on how to keep your baby warm in the pram during winter.

Use a multi-layered approach: If you're going to be nipping in and out of houses, shops or cafés while on your walk, then adding and removing layers is the way to go to regular their temperature. Check what you are wearing and put your little one in one more layer than yourself. So, if you're in a shirt, jumper and jacket, your baby might need a vest, sleepsuit, jumper and a winter coat. Remember, just as it's important to layer up to go outside, you also need to layer down inside as it's important to make sure your baby doesn't overheat.

Cover heads and hands: It's especially important to keep your baby's head warm in winter, so be sure to dress them in a wholly or insulated hat. The ones that cover their ears and cheeks are a great idea for maximum warmth and adorability. Mittens for hands are good too, although you may have trouble getting your baby to keep them on. It's worth persevering, but remember, little hands can also be tucked under blankets. The most important thing is that your baby's body and head are wrapped up well to keep the warmth from escaping.

Keep it natural: Baby clothes with natural fibres, like cotton and wool, are great for winter and help to maintain body heat. They're comfy, warm, gentle on the skin, and let the skin breathe.

Keep them comfy: Choose clothes that allow your baby to move their arms and legs as easily as possible. And watch for potentially annoying zips right up by their neck. Your little one might prefer a couple of soft, lined cardigans rather than a big stiff coat.

Ensure they stay dry: Rain covers for buggies and strollers are invaluable in winter – not only do they keep your baby nice and dry, but they also provide extra warmth. If you’re using a sling or carrier, a good-sized umbrella will do the trick nicely too.
