Testing the Cosatto Waffle 2
I love the Cosatto patterns, particularly their new designs and colourways such as Bobtail and Bureau, I’m also a big fan of the decorative arts and crafts style of Foxford Hall – so when I discovered Cosatto do highchairs in this colourway I was thrilled! I’d been looking into the Scandi-style highchairs but the ability to store the highchair away was also important to me, as I didn’t necessarily want it to be out all the time, so when I looked into the Waffle 2 I thought it looked ideal, it perfectly combines the stylish Scandi look with the practicality of being able to fold it away.
When I first received the highchair and opened up the box I did feel a bit overwhelmed at how many parts it arrived in, I had hoped since it was foldable that it would be pretty much assembled, however there were lots of pieces! Perhaps since it is partly wooden and other parts are metal this would be too tricky to do prior to delivery. Luckily we had some friends visiting the weekend it was delivered, so my husband and his friend got to assembling it for me. It took them over an hour and they did struggle with it at times so I was glad I didn’t end up having to do it, and very grateful for the help!
Once assembled it immediately felt very sturdy and I was very pleased with the final outcome. The dark wood looks very smart and the combination of that with the blue just softens it a little. I love the details, with the fox on the sides matching the fox pattern, and the orange harness also perfectly matching the patterned cushion covers. It is bright and colourful but in a way that fits perfectly into our kitchen.
I have it set up for a 6 month old, but the clever thing about this highchair is that it’s adjustable to grow with your child and fit their needs for longer than the weaning stage. You can easily remove and reposition the seat height and footrest, completely remove the front bar and harness once they don’t need that additional support, and easily remove the tray as well, for when you’re just using it to have baby sitting at the table.
So it’s easier to see the harness in the photos I’ve hooked it over the back of the highchair, but normally of course this would be fitted over the child’s shoulders. The harness is a bit stiff to use at the moment, but I think this will loosen up a bit with use. It's not magnetic so it can be a bit fiddly to get all the parts into place but once you get the hang of where to slot everything it's ok.
There are two different settings for the tray, so that it can be closer to baby, or a bit further away once they get bigger, and the tray can also be stored on the back of the highchair, making storage even easier. The clips for fitting the seat and footrest are really simple to use, once in they feel very sturdy, but they’re also so easy to remove and reset.
The plastic tray can be removed from the wood for easy cleaning, so when they’ve really gone to town making a mess of their meal you can just pop it off and put it in the sink and give it a thorough wash (it’s also dishwasher safe). I have seen other reviews which mentioned that their tray got bent out of shape when putting it in the dishwasher but this is not something I've personally experienced. The padded seat and back cover can also be removed for washing, they’re secured with Velcro straps. The material is soft and padded, and made from recycled plastic bottles. It’s recommended to wipe it down and hand wash only, so an improvement could be making this machine washable for ease.
One thing that is really great about this highchair is that everything is included, the padded seat covers, the harness, the removable dishwasher safe tray – similar highchairs from other brands often have these as additional extras. The amount of adjustability this seat provides, and the ease with which it can be transitioned from highchair to toddler chair is brilliant. I think for the price, the longevity and quality of the product is excellent.
I tried this out with my niece and a friend’s baby and both seemed quite content in here – my niece in particular I think felt very grown up to be in this, as it resembles more of a grown up’s seat than her usual highchair and she’s getting to the age where she has opinions on these sorts of things!
When the highchair is not in use, since the back leg folds in it creates quite a flat product to store away, I’ve taken to putting it in our cupboard under the stairs, but it also tucks away nicely next to our fridge. It’s ideal if you’re short on space or simply don’t want to have the highchair out all the time.
"You can tell they’ve really considered how to make life easier for parents"
I really can’t fault the Waffle 2 on much, it’s a great highchair and you can tell they’ve really considered the design and how to make life easier for parents with regards to storage, how you can fold it away and also have somewhere to store the tray table when not in use. The only things I thought could be improved were less assembly required upon delivery, and being able to machine wash the covers.
I’d love to see more colourways for this highchair – it’s currently available in Foxford Hall, Unicorn Garden and Old MacDonald.
