What to wear in the winter when pregnant?

Material

Of course, the main factor when looking for maternity wear in winter is clothes that will keep you warm. It's especially important for pregnant women to keep well during winter as they're more vulnerable to the effects of cold weather.

Consider materials that will retain heat such as knitted fabrics. Thick jumpers, fluffy socks and lined coats are a must. Layer up with thermals underneath your clothes and don't forget tights, gloves (or pram muffs!) hats and scarves too.

Function

It goes without saying, but you'll want to buy clothes you're actually going to get some wear out of. It may be useful to select clothes you'll be able to wear postpartum, too. There are plenty of breastfeeding and nursing clothing options out there that can make feeding times easier.

When it comes to winter maternity clothes, just be sure to select warmer options, like sweatshirts or hoodies with popper openings, for easier access during feeds. A baby-wearing coat gives you the option to carry baby along with you while keeping both you and baby warm.

Fit

Another factor you'll definitely want to consider is comfort. Anything restrictive is not going to feel comfortable around your bump. Thankfully, maternity wear is often generous around the stomach to allow for growth. If necessary, you may even want to go up a size to ensure you and your bump have plenty of room.

Whether petite or plus size, there are maternity clothes to fit all of the wonderful body shapes out there.

Style

If style is important to you, then you might want to keep eye on current trends or even have fun making up your own. Don't be scared to experiment with different prints, colours and textures to find what works with your changing body. Be true to yourself and what you're most comfortable in.

Being pregnant doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your own personal style, so be sure to dress in whatever reflects you if this is something you enjoy doing. But let's be realistic here, people. If you want nothing more than to throw on a pair of pyjamas, who's to say that can't be stylish too?
