Testing the Purflo Pregnancy pillow
Here's what our pregnant mum tester Beth thought of the Purflo Pregnancy pillow...
I have [pelvic girdle pain]{href='https://www.motherandbaby.com/pregnancy/health/beat-pregnancy-back-pain' }(PGP) and must sleep with my knees separated, the Purflo Breathe pillow is firm and keeps my legs aligned with my hips so I don’t wake up in pain. It’s long enough for me move my legs around while still maintaining a comfortable position, unlike other pregnancy pillows which keep you stuck in one position.
I would recommend this, especially for women suffering with PGP or hip pain. It’s a bonus that it’s so pretty and the cover is easy to remove to wash. It’s easy to move around the bed if you want to change sides and it’s not too big so my 3-year-old can still squeeze in for cuddles too!
I have tried other pillows, one softer and one flatter that fits around my whole body (and takes up the whole bed), it took a little while to get used to the Purflo Breathe due to how firm it is, but now it’s a game-changer, I wake up well-rested and without pain in my hips.
The only change I would make is that it would be nice to have some support under my bump, it’s too wide and firm to fit underneath. I also need to use an additional pillow behind my back, but it’s still worth it for how well it supports my hips. I find it a bit too firm to use as back support and I think it will be a bit big to use for tummy time, but we shall see!
Here's what our first-time pregnant tester Laura thought of the Purflo Pregnancy pillow...
I’m a first-time expectant mum who has just reached the half-way mark in my pregnancy. After developing pelvic girdle pain (PGP) at the end of my first trimester, finding a product to help relieve pressure on my pelvis and provide comfort during the night has been essential.
I’d tried a cheaper pregnancy pillow which wasn’t doing the trick and decided to give the Purflo Breathe Pregnancy Pillow a go. Whilst the price is more mid-range in the market, the difference in quality is notable when compared with the pillow I’d originally tried. One of the key discomforts I have found suffering with PGP is that I can’t sleep on one side for too long or I start to get discomfort in my hips. Because of this, the manoeuvrability and flexibility of the pillow during the night is a really important factor for me. The previous pillow I’d tried was a rigid horseshoe shape which made it quite difficult to turn, whereas the Purflo Breathe Pregnancy Pillow is more versatile in shape and moves with your body. The pillow itself is quite dense – almost memory foam-like – which offers good support for the leg and bump when in use. This does however make it heavier to more around in the night than your average pillow.
The thick stuffing is great for providing hip and pelvis support, as your leg doesn’t sink down into the pillow. I’d say this is a great option for women who move around a lot in the night. Minimal effort is required to put this to use. The pillow was nicely packaged in a protective zipped storage bag and ready for immediate use when taken out. The pillowcase was already applied and it smelled really fresh and clean.
Versatile and comfortable, the flexible design and memory foam-like padding makes it super comfortable in any sleeping position. There is a mesh section of fabric in the middle of the pillow which the website suggests is for breathability under the bump as you grow. The rest of the pillow is a jersey fabric which is super soft and comfortable. I haven’t found the mesh section to offer any additional comfort for my bump area and think the pillow would work just as well if it were all jersey.
The pillowcase is easy to remove and washes well – no discolouration, bobbling or general wear and tear from going through the washing machine. The product has been used for quite a while and not bent in shape, proving its durability to last throughout an entire pregnancy.
The only flaw I have found is that unlike more rigid horseshoe shaped pregnancy pillows, it doesn’t stop you from rolling onto your back which is important in the second half of your pregnancy. Having said that, this pregnancy pillow is very easy to use and would be suited to women of all shapes and sizes.
Final verdict
Whilst there is no miracle cure for a solid night’s sleep during pregnancy, the purflo breathe pillow goes a long way in easing aches and maximising comfort without breaking the bank. If you’re looking for a good quality, versatile pregnancy pillow that will bend with you and provide full support, look no further.
