Testing the Obaby Orla Furniture Set

As a first-time mum I wanted a furniture set that provides safety, durability and longevity for our daughter during her first years. I really liked the look of the Orla Room set, which includes a cotbed, wardrobe and changing drawer unit.

Build

I think it’s important to note that you definitely need lots of space to build this furniture set. It arrived in nine very large boxes that filled my whole hallway. Although this was difficult to organise, it is a positive because each furniture piece was very well packaged and clearly labelled, so you know exactly where to start.

The product was really easy to build as the material is well-made and everything slotted into place really easily. I have built a lot of flat pack furniture in my time and this has been the best quality I have seen.

The instructions were helpful as they were step by step, clear and used simple images for reference. For safety reasons, the set requires two people to build, which makes sense as a lot of pieces are quite heavy to hold on your own, especially when building the wardrobe.

You don’t need many tools at all to build the set, and I managed to build the whole set with just the turning key included in the set and my own Phillips screwdriver.

Usability

The set has some versatility as the cot can be turned into a toddler bed and the drawers have a removable changing top. The wardrobe has a shelf and two clothes rails, however, these are already drilled in a fixed position, which doesn’t give you any versatility.

The two rails in the wardrobe are handy at first, but for 12-18 month clothing it does hang over the bottom rail but you're able to remove the bottom rail to make space as they get older.

The drawers and doors are easy to open and the wardrobe doors have a magnetic catch to keep them securely closed between use. The drawers and wardrobe are also fitted with wall fasteners which are recommended to stop these items from tipping over if climbed, which I think it’s such a great feature to have.

Performance

The material the wardrobe is made from seems to be good quality and reasonably heavy meaning it does feel very stable when built. I can see this furniture lasting the test of time and potentially being used by a second child as well!

I think that the Orla set feels like it has been designed around what parents actually need and will make life easier.

As someone who is tall, the changing table is at a really good height, making it perfect for changing my daughter comfortably. I also found it easy to adjust the levels on the cot, and the fact that it can be lowered or raised is really useful.

Final verdict

Overall, I am really pleased with this set. I love the design and how safe and sturdy it feels. It feels great quality and I expect the set to stand the test of time.

I think this product is great value for money, even though the mattress is not included. It doesn’t cost too much to order separately, and I would recommend this product.

If I were to try and improve this product, I would add more versatility to the setup within the wardrobe by being able to position the shelf in multiple positions, otherwise, I think this is a great first furniture set.
