Taking a family holiday could be just what you need, but if you’ve got little ones in tow, then sometimes the idea of taking a flight with a baby or toddler can be a bit daunting. However, with a cabin approved stroller at hand, it could get a whole lot easier, as you can wheel them right through the terminal, up into the aeroplane, you couldn’t get any closer if you tried.

There are lots of questions about cabin approved strollers and whether or not any compact stroller can be taken on board a plane, so we’ve found 11 strollers that are suitable for taking on board most airlines, and why you might choose to get one, rather than just take your regular stroller on holiday.

What is a cabin approved stroller?

A cabin approved stroller is one that airlines will allow you to take on board an aeroplane. They are lightweight, and fold up to within the dimensions required by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Those dimensions are: 22in (56cm), width of 18in (45cm) and depth of 10in (25cm), however you might find individual airlines have different rules.

Why buy a cabin approved stroller?

As mentioned above some of the advantages of having a cabin approved stroller are that they’re lightweight, they fold up very small, and of course you can go right up into the aircraft, without having to run through the terminal, with a toddler trying their best to keep up with you.

What is a cabin approved stroller?

A cabin approved stroller is one that is especially designed to fold up into the required dimensions, set by the IATA and individual airlines. These types of strollers are the perfect travel companion to a family with young children.

What type of stroller can I bring on a plane?

Your stroller will need to be a cabin approved stroller in order for you to take it on board with you, otherwise it will need to be checked like other large pieces of luggage and put in the hold of the plane. In most cases, checking a stroller, and other baby equipment is free, however it will depend on the airline.

What have the airlines said about cabin approved luggage?

Despite the IATA setting out some rules over the sizes of cabin approved strollers, each airline has their own restrictions, which should be checked before intending to travel. Below are the restrictions on some major airlines.

easyJet

The easyJet website states, that if you wish to bring a stroller on board, ‘They will need to be stowed in the overhead locker, should not exceed 56 x 45 x 25 cm, (including any handles or wheels), and need to be purchased as a ‘large cabin bag’ when you book your flight.’

Jet2.com

Strollers are not allowed in the cabin of Jet2 aircraft, instead the website says, ‘a collapsible pushchair/buggy and/or a car seat and/or a travel cot can be carried in the hold free of charge, as long as the total weight of these items doesn’t exceed 10kg. Anything exceeding this will be charged for in line with our excess baggage policy, subject to space and availability.

'And for your convenience, you can take your collapsible pushchair/buggy all the way to the plane steps/air bridge, where we’ll put it in the hold and you can get it back at baggage reclaim.’

British Airways

British Airways' website states, 'You’ll find generous baggage allowances with free carry-ons, children over 2 are given the same allowance as adults and essentials such as child seats and pushchairs are included.'

However, the website also states that pushchairs within certain larger dimensions can be taken up to the aircraft door. There they must then be handed over to be placed in the hold. In certain destinations it will then be returned to the aircraft door on arrival.

To take advantage of this service, 'It must be a single piece, slimline, fully collapsible pushchair,' and 'Maximum dimension size including wheels: Height 38cm, Length 117cm, Depth 38cm.'

Emirates

For travellers with Emirates, it is dependent on the space in the aeroplane as the website says passengers are, ‘Permitted to bring one carry‑cot or one fully collapsible stroller into the cabin if there is room. If there is no space for these items in the cabin, they will have to be checked.’

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic state: ‘Pushchairs that are a maximum of 23 x 36 x 56cm (9 x 14 x 22 inches) when folded are permitted in the cabin with you as your hand baggage.’

However, it also says: 'Please note pushchairs carried onboard are part of your hand baggage allowance, not an additional item. If your buggy does not fit in the baggage sizer at check in or at the boarding gate, the pushchair will be tagged by ground staff and checked in either at check in or the boarding gate. You must be able to place your foldable pushchair in the overhead bins unaided.'

Ryanair

Ryanair's website reads, 'You can bring 2 items of carry-on baby equipment for free.

'This can include a pushchair/buggy, car seat, booster seat or travel cot. These will need to be tagged at the check-in desk or at the boarding gate. You will be able to use your pushchair/buggy until you get to the steps of the aircraft. Depending on your arrival airport you may find it at the steps of the aircraft or in the arrival's baggage hall. Check with the ground staff as you disembark the aircraft.'

However, it is also understood that passengers may take a stroller on board for free, if it is within the hand luggage dimensions (55 x 40 x 20cm), and there is space on board.

TUI

With the same dimensions for hand luggage as Ryanair, TUI will allow passengers to take on board buggies that are within those dimensions. The website says, 'You can take 1 piece of hand luggage per person (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg and with maximum dimensions of 55x40x20cm on a TUI Airways flight.

'You must be able to lift your hand luggage into the overhead storage compartments yourself.

'You can take your pushchair or buggy through security, right up until you get on the plane, where we’ll put it into the luggage hold for you. You won’t usually get access to the buggy again until you get to the baggage reclaim area in your destination.'

All the information is correct at the time of writing, but we advise checking the airline you are flying with as their luggage restrictions may change.
