Testing the AngelSense Personal GPS Tracker
It seems to be incredibly accurate and lets you see where your child is with regular updates to your phone (although you can reduce these in settings to save the battery). I like that despite it being GPS you can also track indoors because it searches for WiFi signals. We haven’t tested the range other than my daughter going for a walk with family about ten minutes from me in our local area. However, it claims to have nationwide coverage.
The battery does drain quite quickly if you use all the functions, however, because we have not used it for long journeys and we haven’t needed the voice calls, the tracker lasts 24 hours. This is good, but inconvenient that you need to charge it daily. I like that you can set a reminder for each evening that will notify your phone to remind you to charge it when your child is in bed.
I think it is great value for money at £59. It allows you to keep an eye on your child discreetly without giving them access to a phone and the internet. It also reassures them as they venture further from you that they can contact you whenever you need. Although the subscription for GPS tracking is £29.99 per month which I think is expensive. For a cat GPS tracker, it is only £89 for the year, so this seems pricey per month, even for the reassurance it provides.
It is discreet so not obvious to others that your child is wearing a GPS device, however, for safety it provides reassurance and accurate tracking to keep your child safe. I have an iPhone and it has worked really well and is easy to set up. It is easy to set up and the App is quite self-explanatory. That said, Angel Sense, are incredibly helpful and provide excellent customer service if you have any questions. They also have lots of useful ‘how-to’ videos for you to follow. My daughter is only 8 and she understands how it works. It is easy to set up. You simply charge it straight from the box and download the app which directs you through the set-up process.
It is lightweight and very smooth with no sharp corners, so I believe it is comfortable to wear, or to attach to a bag. I haven’t tested if it’s waterproof. It feels robust and looks like it would withstand a rain shower, however, I wouldn’t want to plunge it into water. It feels like it is well made and durable. The loop at the top to add a key chain or clip is extremely robust and I can’t see that it will break. It is very smooth and there are no parts which feel flimsy or at risk of breaking when being thrown around in a child’s school bag.
The buttons on the side for calls, eg, a one-way call, or two-way call are not immediately obvious, and it takes a bit of practice to use them successfully. There is also a message function which means I can type a message on my phone and send it to my daughter and it will play on the tracker. While this is a great idea, there is also a message button on the side of the tracker which allows my daughter to send a message, but it is fiddly to press because it is quite small and we haven’t managed it successfully yet.
Final verdict
The tracker is discreet and lightweight so it won’t bother users, in fact, children wouldn’t notice it in their bag, but it is bulky enough for them to be aware of it clipped to their clothes. That said, it has some great functions to reassure children just starting to gain independence and perhaps walking to school on their own for the first time so you wouldn’t want to keep it hidden from them. I tested it with my 8-year-old daughter, who is not obviously old enough to go anywhere alone but I was able to track her on a family day out when she was with other family members and the device was accurate, even working within buildings if it can pick up a WiFi signal. It has some great functions such as 20way voice call so my daughter can press an easy to reach button in the centre which (perhaps alarmingly) is called the SOS button, and it triggers a call to my phone so she can speak to me immediately. There is also an option for parents to trigger a 1-way call which activates the device so you can hear where your child is and what is happening around them, but they will be unaware you can hear. I liked that you can set a schedule to disable voice calls during certain hours, for example, school hours, so it won’t disturb lessons with any unexpected alarms.
