Testing the Mother&Baby Pure Gold Anti-Allergy Coir Pocket Cot Bed Mattress

I am the mum of a 16-month-old boy, and allergies are definitely an area of concern in our household: I suffer with hay fever, while my husband has psoriasis and asthma. Therefore, anything we can do to lower our son’s contact with allergens gets a big tick. While he’s too young for us to know if he might have inherited any allergies from us, it brings me a sense of relief to know he’s now using a mattress that should lessen the effects of dust or hair (especially when our house is embarrassingly dusty – honestly, who has time to dust?!)

It has Purotex ® technology which is entirely natural and organic, and reduces dust mite allergens by 93.7 per cent, dog hair allergens by 66.7 per cent and cat hair allergens by 92.8 per cent. As cat owners, we were particularly pleased about that (now all we have to do is stop the cat from sleeping in the cot – he won’t be discouraged!)

We immediately swapped it for my son’s previous mattress – it didn’t require anything doing to it beforehand and was easy to unpack. I was pleased to see it had an outer cover that can be removed via a zip for speedy washing. It fits his cot (which is a standard 140x70cm) without gaps, and seems supportive but comfy.

It has a moveable waterproof membrane that gives the mattress a slightly squeaky texture when pushed (but not enough to creak in the night and wake baby, thankfully.) I did wonder if this layer might make the mattress feel a bit hot, but testing coincided with some really warm nights and he’s been absolutely fine on it, including for hot afternoon naps. It also means you don’t need a waterproof sheet, which I imagine will be more useful to us during the potty training years (the mattress can be used from birth up to five).

At £119 it’s not the cheapest on the market, but there are certainly more expensive models. If your baby is a good sleeper and naps at home too, they are racking up quite a few hours on their mattress, so it seems like a reasonable investment if you can stretch to it. A cot mattress should last three to five years (as long as it has no visible wear and tear), so potentially, it’s a one-off cost per child. I personally feel the Mother+Baby Pure Gold Anti-Allergy Coir Pocket Cot Bed Mattress is worth the money. It seems well-made and I have no concerns about its durability.

Final verdict

As a mum who went through IVF, I’d previously done a lot of research on everyday harmful chemicals in order to be in the best possible shape for each round, and it’s hard not to carry that slight militancy through into motherhood, especially when baby skin is so vulnerable. Therefore I have found the idea of a natural, organic mattress to be very appealing. It’s hard to say how bothered my son is – he certainly sleeps well on it – but it’s really me who has benefitted from additional peace of mind about allergens. Plus, it’s easy to clean and waterproof. The only downside is that slightly crinkly texture under the cover, in terms of being slightly noisy and also my concern it might be slightly warmer than mattresses without a waterproof layer (but of course that has its own problems!) That said, it does claim to be very breathable, and as mentioned, it has been tested on hot nights and found to be perfectly comfy.
