Testing the Naturalmat Quilted Latex Mat

I am a mum to a 2.5 year old daughter and 2 month old son. Having adjusted (somewhat!) to being a family of four we decided it would be a good time to move our daughter into a toddler bed, before her little brother needs to move into her old cotbed in a few months’ time.

We tested this mattress in our daughter’s toddler bed. Initially when she moved into the bed we used her old cotbed mattress and then switched to the naturalmat mattress a couple of weeks later, meaning we were able to make some assessment of whether the mattress affected her sleep quality. Our daughter is daytime potty trained but still occasionally has accidents during naps. Therefore an easily removable, waterproof and washable mattress protector was important to us. Her bedroom also gets quite warm in hot weather so we were looking for whether the mattress’ breathability enabled her to stay cool during warm nights.

I really enjoyed unpacking this product. Everything felt thoughtfully done, from recyclable and/or compostable packaging materials to easy-to-follow instructions on caring for the mattress and hand-written notes explaining the care/warning labels. I unzipped the outer and inner covers and was impressed with how well-made it felt and liked that you can see exactly what the mattress is made of.

The mattress fits very snuggly in our toddler bed (although I think this is partly a feature of the bed as our old mattress was also a snug fit). The waterproof mattress protector is held in place with elasticated straps and has a soft natural feel to it. The mattress feels firm with a bit of give and comfortable across the whole surface. There was a mild smell of wool (the instructions suggested airing the mattress for a few hours before first use). I quite like the smell of wool and after a couple of days didn’t notice it anyway. Our daughter didn’t seem to notice it at all.

Our daughter has slept very well on the mattress. During the testing period there were a couple of nights where her bedroom reached 26-27C so she slept in just a sleeveless vest and nappy and seemed to stay cool enough. We had one small accident during the testing period which the mattress protector coped with well and it still fitted the mattress well after washing. (Note: I have not yet tried washing the outer cover of the mattress - the instructions suggest this can be a little tricky to put back on after washing so I should probably try it out at some point).

Budget

It’s expensive, so not great if you’re on a tight budget, but if you’re able and prepared to pay more for a product that’s sustainably handmade from natural materials then this is decent value (from a bit of research I think they are a fair bit more expensive than the little green sheep mattresses, which I believe are a similar product but without as many sustainability credentials)

Comfort

● Does your child sleep better or worse than usual on this mattress? Hard to say, if anything slightly better but she’s a good sleeper anyway so not much room for improvement!

● Do you think the mattress feels comfortable? Yes

● What does the fabric feel like? Soft? Scratchy? Crinkly? It feels soft, firm but a bit spongy.

Support

● Do you feel that this is supportive enough for your child’s body? i.e. does it sag anywhere? Yes, but note that my child is very petite - she only weighs 10kg.

● Does it offer the same support throughout or do any areas feel less supportive?

Ease of cleaning

● Does it have a cover? Is it waterproof? Comes with mattress protector by default. Has withstood a small leak

● Is the cover removable and machine washable? yes

● Did you have to clean it during the testing period? only the mattress protector

● Did it clean well? yes

Durability

● Do you feel this is well made? Yes

● Do the seams look secure?

● If it has springs, do they seem strong, as if they’ll last well? N/a
