As a bit of context to this review, I was keen to test this pillow because I have neck pain from a wonky spine and I’ve found it’s been helped immensely by using a memory foam pillow. My daughter has recently started complaining about having a sore neck in the mornings so I was hoping that using a similar toddler pillow might help her too.
First impressions
The pillow is nicely packaged in a cardboard box, though the pillow itself is in a plastic bag. There’s very little smell, which you sometimes get with memory foam, so I felt confident using it straight out of the packaging (though I did leave it to air for a day).
Looking at the material, I was expecting a ‘Bamboo’ memory foam pillow to have more bamboo as part of its materials, but it is actually just 70% of the outer cover. The inner cover is 100% polyester and the pillow itself is 100% visco memory foam. However, it is certified to Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® so I can be confident there aren’t any harmful substances, and it’s CertiPUR Certified to ensure that the memory foam is of the highest standard.
It is a smaller size than most pillows so while you could put it in a pillowcase to match the rest of your bedding, it might end up having a lot of excess fabric, and you’d lose the softness and sweat-wicking, hypoallergenic qualities of the bamboo cover. My daughter really loved the panda motif on the pillowcase so it’s not an issue for us that the pillow doesn’t match her bedding, but it might be something to consider if you have a set colour scheme or design.
Testing the Panda London Kids Bamboo Memory Foam Pillow
My daughter slept on this pillow for a couple of weeks before I wrote this review and she’s been very happy to go to bed every night. She says it’s very comfortable and loves how soft the cover feels. She’s also needed to be woken every morning, and while I wouldn’t guarantee that it’s a result of the pillow, she is certainly sleeping very well at the moment.
The bamboo cover is Hypoallergenic which is great for my daughter’s sensitive skin and I’ve not noticed any reaction to the cover, even without washing it first. She often gets red patches or itchy skin if we sleep in bedding that’s not been washed with sensitive laundry liquid, so the fact that she’s not reacted to this is reassuring. It’s also thermoregulating and I certainly noticed that it feels pleasantly cool to the touch.
The cover is washable and unzips easily so you can slide it off the pillow and pop it in the wash.
Depending how quickly you can dry it, you might find it beneficial to have a spare cover, which would push up the price – at the time of writing spare covers are £9.95. We’ve been ok so far to simply dry it on the line as it’s been sunny, but it is possible to tumble dry it on low so if you have a tumble dryer you could probably get away without a spare cover.
The pillow seems durable and well-made. It also comes with a 10-year guarantee which is a real selling point as it gives me confidence that it should last well and stay supportive.
Final Verdict
The Panda London Kids Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow is an excellent pillow, regardless of whether your child complains of neck pain or not. It’s enticingly comfortable (and who doesn’t want their child to be encouraged to actually go to bed?!) and stays supportive but soft throughout the night. The cover seems to stay cool and my daughter has slept very well since using it. There’s no denying it’s more expensive than a normal pillow, but I’d expect this to last longer than most and the 10 year guarantee seems to suggest it should have a good lifespan that makes it better value for money.
