The best splash pads to keep toddlers cool in the heat

Whenever there's a bout of good weather in the UK, it's like there's a bat signal in the sky shaped like a paddling pool. They're a must-have. As well as a way to cool the kids (and adults) down on hot days, they can keep the little ones entertained for hours at a time - and who doesn't want that? That's where the best splash pads come in...

While paddling pools are brilliant, they can take some time to inflate, fill, and empty, they can damage your grass, and aren't always suited to all ages in your household, so if you're looking for an alternative, let us introduce you to splash pads. You get all the hydration of a paddling pool but with a real energy-burning twist - sprinklers!

Not only are they quick and easy to set up, but they're also fun, feature educational patterns on them, and are easy to put away and store. It's a win-win.

To help you find the splash pad that's right for your family, we've rounded up the best-rated out there.

The best splash pads 2024

Best splash pad overall

Featuring numbers and animals, this large sprinkler pad comes with five repair patches as a bonus. One reviewer who bought this as they wanted a quick setup rather than having to wait for the pool to fill up said, "Worked out great! It's also quite quick to empty and put away! My son loves it. He puts his slide at one end and slides into and through it onto the grass. The sprinklers managed to get to around 50-60cm." They also said the seller was good, that they had a query about the adapter and they responded quickly – that's always a good sign!

Another customer said, "I bought this with little expectation as looked flimsy. It's the total opposite and my two kids love it! They had so much fun trying to cover up all the water holes. The hose attachment is very easy to set up and didn't leak. It collects water quickly. Providing a small water pool once the hose is turned off."

You may notice a slight odour when first opened, however, the product is safe and non-toxic. Just place in the vent, the smell will be scattered.

Best splash pad for easy setup

This bright and colourful mat features a cute design and provides plenty of room for at least two to three kids. It's been praised by parents for being nice and easy to set-up and install. One reviewer said, "With the weather so hot I thought this would be a great treat for the kids but seems even the adults loved it! It's very well made and was easy to install the hosepipe to it." They said they were surprised at the quality, and had thought it would be "extremely sloppy with water on it too but didn't seem that way at all." They said it was a great edition to the summer season and highly recommended it. You'll need to ventilate for a couple of days before use to allow the initial smell to air out.

Best square splash pad

SOKA Large Square Sprinkle Splash Pad
Price: £11.99

Most splash pads are circular, but this one is square-shaped, which makes it stand out from the rest, perhaps offering a little bit more space to place and making the most of space in your garden. We love the fact that is comes with seven patches in case you need to make repairs - that should last you a while! They recommend using it as a sand pit, ball pit or even a small pool, as well as a splash pad, but the recommended age is from 5years, so this may not be suitable for toddlers when wet. One reviewer said, "Does tend to get bit slippy but nothing that you wouldn't expect."

Customers found it easy to assemble and a good size. One customer said, "The mat is bigger than I imagined which is good. The part which is disappointing is the height of the flow of water and on one side the holes flow out over rather than inwards." however, they did like that it holds water, which they said was ideal for their dog and toddler to play in without there being "too much" water.

Pros

  • Even more repair patches (seven) for peace of mind
  • Can be used as a sand pit, ball pit, or even a small paddling pool

Cons

  • Only suitable for older kids aged 5 to 14 years
  • Doesn't flow as high as displayed
Dimensions:168 cm x 168 cm

Best educational splash pad

Price: £19.99

Featuring a fun, educational map of the world design, this splash pad comes with an extra thick durable bottom which makes it safer and better able to withstand water pressure. You can also adjust the hieght and direction of the spray, and it folds up easily for taking on-the-go or storing. One reviewer said, "It's much bigger than others I've seen at just under 6ft x 5ft but it's so simple to set up and the kids have great fun playing in it." The customer says to bear in mind that it does use constant water flow, which is worth a mention here as it's not as deep as some of the others on the market, which means it'll fill up faster and flow over onto your lawn.

  • Folds up for easy storage and transport
  • Adjustable spray height and direction

Are splash pads safe?

Yes, splash pads are perfectly safe if you inflate them properly. You make sure children are supervised to play with the mat safely. As with most water toys, there's always the safety concern of slippery surfaces, especially if excitable tots are running about. To minimise the risk, we recommend picking an option with a non-slip bottom. Make sure the water pressure isn't too high - this can usually be adjusted using the hose tap.

Are splash pads sanitary?

Yes, inflatable splash pads that you use at home are sanitary as you're using the same, completely clean water that you receive within the home. However, they can get a little dirty as kids hop on and off the grass, so you should make sure to clean the mat after every playtime to prevent diseases and germs.
