Choosing the best baby carriers can make all the difference in comfort, safety, and convenience for parents and babies alike. I vividly remember carrying my children for hours on end in our baby carrier – I used it almost every single day, and still regard it as the best purchase we made for our baby. For many parents, babywearing (the "official" name for carrying your baby in a wrap or sling) not only offers an easy way to keep your little one close (and enjoy hours of cuddles), but it also keeps your hands free as you go about your day.
There are many different types of baby carrier out there, ranging from simple baby slings and wraps to more structured baby carrier backpacks. They are easy to put on, take off, and adjust, and comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time – perfect for when you're heading out and about. Many will also let you carry your baby in a variety of positions, so you can work out which one you both like best.
They're also comfortable for your baby, and designed to provide ergonomic support for both you and your child. This includes making sure that your baby's hips and back are in the right position as they snuggle into you. The best baby carriers are also built to last, using durable materials that ensure you can keep using them on a regular basis, even as your child grows.
The best baby carriers at a glance:
Do I Need a Baby Carrier?
Of course, you don't need a baby carrier, in the same way that you don't need a doughnut. It isn't essential to life, but it can definitely make your life better. Here are just a few of the reasons why having a baby carrier is such a sensible investment:
Calming effect
As anyone who's had a baby will tell you, baby's cry. A lot. Carrying your baby close to you can prove incredibly calming for both the baby, and you. That physical closeness helps release Oxytocin, often described as the love hormone, and can help soothe a distressed little one. The warmth and movement of being next to you in a baby carrier can also mimic some of the sensations of being in the womb, which can also help get your baby to sleep.
Convenience
One of the greatest benefits of a baby carrier is how simple they are to use. That convenience can be enormously helpful, for example when you're going out and about. Sometimes it's easier than using an umbrella stroller, which you might have to fold and unfold, for example.
Many carriers simply slip over your arms, clip around your back and waist, and you're good to go. It's also often easier than carrying your child in your arms. And if you want to go off-road, for example into the woods, or up a hill, a baby carrier is a lot easier than pushing a pram!
If you have multiple children with you, having one in a baby carrier means your hands are free to push a stroller, or hold a toddler's hand. You can even pair your baby carrier with a baby wearing coat or a baby wearing hoodie, which allows you to dress for the weather, without restricting your movement.
When you're at home, a baby carrier can let you get on with any jobs that need doing, while keeping your baby safe and settled, and close by you.
Hands-free breastfeeding
Breastfeeding in public isn't always straightforward, for a variety of reasons. But it is possible to breastfeed in a sling or baby carrier, especially if you want to feed on demand. It's ideal for those times when there isn't necessarily a handy place to sit down, and can also offer you plenty of privacy when you're in public. In addition, it's great for when you're in the middle of a job, and stopping to feed might be less than ideal.
Build strong bonds
Perhaps above all, baby carriers can be a great way to strengthen your bond with your infant. There are plenty of benefits to skin-to-skin contact with your baby. As we've already mentioned, that physical closeness can help release oxytocin, the hormone that helps parents to bond with their babies. Some studies suggest that parents with higher levels of oxytocin may also be more responsive to the needs of their offspring.
And the best news is that this isn't limited to the mother of the child. For any co-parent or caregiver, a baby carrier can be a great way to build your connection to that child. Plus, it means mums can have a bit of a break from time to time, too!
How we chose and tested the best baby carriers
Over the years, Mother&Baby has tested hundreds of baby carriers. Whether those are simple slings and wraps that are great for newborns, baby carrier backpacks, which are superb as they start to grow, or something else entirely, there isn't much we haven't come across.
Like all our product recommendations, the best baby carriers are chosen based on a combination of real-world testing from our army of parent testers, alongside our experienced editorial team and product specialists. Where we can, we also consult experts who specialise in that field, to ensure you get the right advice along with the right product.
If we can’t get our hands on something personally, we select products only from reputable brands, scouring reviews, forums and real parent experience to ensure all products are fit for use and deserve a space in your home.
When choosing which products made it onto our shortlist, our testers considered six main criteria: safety, comfort (for both baby and parent), durability, adjustability, ease of use, and value for money. Many of these products made it onto our Mother&Baby Awards shortlist, and were reviewed by parent testers, who reported back to us on their findings.

Nuna CUDL
Best overall baby carrier
Winner of the Best Baby Carrier/ Sling or Back Carrier in the 2023 Mother&Baby Awards, this carrier offers ease and security for parent and baby, allowing you to keep your little one close while keeping your hands free.
Suitable for babies aged 0-3 years, the Nuna CUDL is designed to grow with your child, featuring an integrated infant booster for newborns that easily adjusts as your baby grows. Whether you prefer baby facing in for those intimate snuggles or facing out to explore the world, or even backpack mode for long walks outside, the CUDL has you covered. Parents also love the range of stylish colours it comes in, with something to suit everyone.
We know comfort is key when it comes to baby carriers, and the CUDL ensures maximum comfort with its padded shoulder straps and waistband, which are made using breathable fabric for warmer months. The magnetic buckles make taking your little one in and out of their carrier a breeze, while the zip-open storage pocket on the waistband provides convenient storage for your essentials. Our mum tester Evie found taking her sleeping baby out very easy; “It’s very easy to put on and fit, and we love that you can easily undo the buckles quietly to transfer a sleeping baby out of the sling," she said.
It also comes with a sun hood for brighter days and organic cotton bibs, making it a must-have for on-the-go families who just need everything in one. Our parent tester particularly loved this feature, "The bib attachment to the front of the CUDL is great for forward facing, especially as little ones like to suck on the front of the sling. We love how easy it is to then remove the bib and wash it without needing to wash the entire thing."

Best Budget Baby Carrier
The RYLOOBABY Sling was awarded Silver for Best Baby Carrier/ Sling or Back Carrier at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024.
The RYLOOBABY Sling offers little ones a safe, comfy and calming space with good airflow to keep them cool. It's also one of the most budget-friendly baby carriers on our list.
Made from durable materials – 95 per cent cotton and 5 per cent spandex, the sling is practical as well as comfortable. Our dad tester, Tim Ferid, describes the sling as "incredibly soft", and he thought the packaging was lovely; "a cute touch when receiving the wrap". He also said the baby sling is "lightweight and all rolls up into a small bag for easy transport." Tim recommends this baby sling due to how user-friendly it is and how comfortable he said it felt for both him and Otis, his son.
As for mum, we think you'll love the grey-green colour, it's a soft neutral that'll go with anything you have in your wardrobe and, being a one-size-fits-all, all mums can wear it. You'll find the clear pictorial instructions useful, which Tim found easy to follow, not to mention the video link if you really do find yourself tangled up! Our mum tester, who had never used a wrap sling before, also found it easy to follow the instructions.
She goes on to express how much she loved the material of this wrap, describing it as thick, soft and luxurious. The comfort factor of this product was also tested against the mum's c-section scar that wasn't healing. She found that everything rubbed, but the soft material of the Ryloobaby Sling genuinely helped to keep discomfort at bay. In reviews, mums also love this sling for relieving back and shoulder pain. Indeed, the sling is described as a “hip-healthy” product by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI).
The versatility of the Ryloobaby Sling is what reviewers appreciate most, not just allowing for different carrying positions - front and back, but also being suitable for newborns. Many mums commented on how they enjoy being close to little ones and experience that sense of connection while staying hands-free to get on with everyday life chores and activities. Our mum tester describes how this has minimised stress for her so that she can carry on as normal, whilst attending to her newborn baby's needs too.

Best lightweight baby carrier
This soft and cosy cotton wrap is designed to provide your newborn with the comforting sensation of being in the womb. Offering four different carrying positions to accommodate your baby, the Dreamgenii® SnuggleRoo Baby Carrier is designed to be suitable from birth to 12 months.
Made from 100% cotton, the SnuggleRoo is gentle on both your baby's delicate skin and yours, leaving no red marks behind. Its simple design promotes that all-important bonding experience between parent and child while allowing for hands-free parenting, ideal for busy mums and dads on the go.
During testing, parents found the carrier comfortable and convenient, especially during the newborn stage. “I loved how high and close it held baby to me, so he felt reassured at all times too,” commented our mum tester Rosemary. Although some parents found the instructions a bit tricky to follow initially, with mum Natalie saying, “they weren’t very clear on how to wear it,” parents eventually praised the carrier's soft material and absence of complicated buckles or mechanisms.
The SnuggleRoo's lightweight and compact design make it easy to store away and carry, fitting neatly into your baby bag or stroller without being bulky. Our mum tester Georgia said, “it is lightweight, so can easily be folded up into your change back, popped underneath the pushchair or packed in a suitcase, without taking up too much space.” Parents also appreciated its versatility and comfort, making it a go-to choice for outings and busy schedules.
Our testers also found it very easy to adjust as baby grows, with mum tester Sooha commenting, “It’s easy to adjust which saves valuable time.” They also agreed that the fact it was machine washable was brilliant after an accident, making it very easy to keep clean.

Best baby carrier for breastfeeding
Offering both complete carrying freedom and close bonding with your baby, the Izmi Wrap is made from luxuriously soft two-way stretch bamboo material, providing a snug and supportive position for your baby, which is recognised by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. With two carrying positions - front carry and hip carry - and the added option for breastfeeding support, this wrap offers some extra comfort for babies and easier breastfeeding for mums, just like our mum tester Sam who said, “I've even been able to breastfeed whilst walking the dog and no one noticed! An absolute must-have for any mum. I love babywearing for the bond it gives me with my baby.”
Some parents would have liked some improvements, such as increasing the weight limit for older babies, as our mum tester Carys found, commenting, “I did not use it for breastfeeding as my baby was a bit too big to get the positioning right, but I could see it would be a big benefit to use for younger and smaller babies. However, there is a limited timeframe on how long the wrap can be used for, which might not make it suitable for all if budgets were tight.” They would have also liked a more simplified wrapping process, as Carys also found, “Without having the videos to hand, putting the wrap on is a bit difficult, so if this could be simplified, then I think that would be a big benefit.”
Overall, our parent testers loved its durability and versatility, making it a preferred choice over structured carriers for the close bond it fosters between parent and baby, as well as the breastfeeding benefits.
Won a Bronze Award in the 2021 M&B Awards in the Best Baby Carrier/Sling.

Best baby carrier for older babies and toddlers
najell.com
Designed by the Swedish brand Najell, this baby carrier is a modern twist on a classic baby carrier, both feeling and looking the part. The Original Volume 2 will see you from newborn to 3 years with just one carrier making it much better value for money compared to other carriers with less longevity.
Our mum testers also love how environmentally friendly this carrier also is as it’s made from recycled fabrics. The magnetic clips ensure quick and easy usage, while the extra pouch adds convenience for carrying essentials. Our mum tester, Ria, agreed with how easy it is to use, commenting, “The magnetic clip system is so quick and secure that it means I can put our little one in without assistance. It takes a matter of seconds to strap in our little one and we’ve actually ditched the pram for small dog walks and use the Najell baby carrier as it’s so easy to put her in.” It’s easy adjustability also make it ideal for both parents to use.
As well as feeling soft and having a trendy design, the padded waistband and shoulder straps provide an added layer of comfort particularly for postpartum recovery when you need it most. Our mum tester Ria said, “The carrier has a padded waistband and shoulder straps that make it very comfy to wear (even with a post-partum belly and c-section scar), and I imagine this will be particularly helpful as she gets bigger and we are carrying that little bit more weight.”
The carrier is also machine-washable, adding further to its convenience, allowing for easy cleaning after any spills. “A big bonus is that it's machine washable meaning that I don’t have to worry about any milk dribble or reflux that might get on the carrier.” Ria said.

Our mum tester Kirsty particularly loved how easy it was to use; “The carrier is easy to put on and the magnets make it easy to get baby in and out by myself. Mum Sarah found it very easy to use even with another little one in tow; “The auto click buckle is absolutely amazing and can even be done one-handed, which is an absolute godsend, especially when juggling more than one child. Safety Considerations for Baby Carriers
When it comes to baby carriers, there are a few safety tips you need to keep in mind before using one with your baby so we spoke to expert Rosie Dodds, NCT's senior policy adviser, to ask her all about safety when it comes to keeping your baby secure in a baby carrier.
Don't use loose fabrics
While you might think that loose fabric on a sling would be comfortable for your baby, it can "allow your baby to slump down, which can hinder his breathing," says Rosie. Instead, make sure you can always see your baby's face when you glance down. Check that the sling is tight enough to hug them close.
Check the weight guidelines
Double-check the weight guidelines on each sling you consider buying, as it's not a case of one-size-fits-all. Then adjust it every time you wear it, especially if other people are wearing the sling too.
Don't zip up your coat over your baby
Even when it's cold out, refrain from zipping up your coat to cover your baby, as it can put them at risk of suffocating. Providing they're wearing enough clothing, they'll be cosy enough – and your own body heat will keep them warm. Alternatively, you may want to consider a baby wearing coat for the winter.
Wear your baby high up
The higher up on the body your baby is, the easier the sling will be on your back. Similarly, the closer they are to your face, the better you can monitor their behaviour and wellbeing.
Don't forget their head
A newborn baby's head always needs support. Whether you're carrying them or wearing your baby in a sling, make sure to support the head and keep an eye on it. Don't let your baby slump. While babies will naturally gravitate towards a slight C shape in a sling, try and keep their spine as straight as possible. "Carrying them upright with their hips and legs in the 'M' position is likely to be safest. It is most suitable for their developing hips and spine," Rosie from NCT explains.
Make sure baby is wearing the right kind of clothes
Could your baby be too hot? Think about the sort of clothes your baby is wearing as the weather gets warmer. You wouldn't like being stuffed up and swaddled inside excess fabrics either. If you're hot, chances are your baby is too. If it's one of those days when it's a bit warmer but raining a baby carrier cover may be more suitable.
Don't let your baby's legs dangle
Your baby could be at risk of developing hip dysplasia if their legs dangle. Instead, they should be in a frog stance where their bottom and hamstrings are supported by the sling. Also, look out for products that are endorsed by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute .
Find the right one for you
If your baby is resisting the one you've bought, it might just mean that you'll need to try a different type. Thankfully there are plenty of options.
Find the correct position
Safety experts recommend that the baby is facing the parents in a carrier from newborn to six months. When your baby can hold their head up, they can then be moved to the forward-facing position. This position is great for development. This allows babies to explore the world and be stimulated by their surroundings.
Don't keep a newborn in a carrier too long
You may be wondering how long you should carry your baby in their baby carrier, and just as you wouldn't like to be stuck in the same position for hours, newborns should have their positions changed often. Regularly check that your baby's hips, head, neck, and back are well-supported. Plus, you should keep an eye on that their arms and legs can move freely.
Avoid bag style slings
Bag slings are unsafe for small babies as they can put your baby in a dangerous position (chin-to-chest) and could risk asphyxiation with fabric covering their face. Make sure to choose alternatives like those on this list.
Types of baby carriers
There are three main types of baby carriers that parents swear by:
Traditional baby carriers: A "traditional" baby carrier will have a structured waist and padded shoulder straps. They're typically more structured than a wrap, and less rigid than a backpack carrier. You should expect one of these to have a structured waist, padded shoulders, and often buckles or straps to secure your infant. Often, they'll also allow you to carry your child on your chest, hip, or back.
Sling baby carriers: These are the simplest type of baby carrier in design terms, because they are made from very long pieces of fabric, which you wrap around yourself and the baby. Many are made from natural materials such as bamboo or cotton, and are extremely comfortable for keeping little ones close to you. They're great for newborns and very young babies.
The process of putting these wraps on can be a little more complicated than with a more structured baby carrier.
Backpack baby carriers: At the other end of the spectrum are backpack carriers. As the name suggests, they're structured like a hiker's backpack, so they offer superb support for your back, and are great for going off on adventures. They're ideal for hiking, long walks, and sightseeing, for example. Because of their structure, these are more suitable for babies from six months and upwards.
How to Choose a Baby Carrier
When you're choosing a baby carrier, there is plenty to consider. But we'd suggest focusing on the following:
How old is your child?
If you're child is already over six months, then a wrap may not provide enough support, so a more structured baby carrier might be more suitable.
You might also want to think about whether a baby carrier is needed just while your baby is under six months, or if you want one that will grow with them until they're a few years older.
How often do you plan to use it?
If it's just for occasional use, then something cheaper and less durable will probably do the job. But, if you plan to use it every day, or for hours at a time, then it's worth considering spending a bit more to make sure you've got something that's going to be hard-wearing, and also comfortable for both you and your child.
What will you use it for?
Is it just for a quick trip to the shops? Or are you planning on going trekking across hills and dales? More rugged backpack baby carriers will likely be more suited to more adventurous pastimes, while more leisurely activities will be fine with something a little less structured.
Also think about how long your child is likely to be in there for, and look for a baby carrier that's going to be comfortable enough for them, and will give you the support you need. Whether that's just for a few minutes at a time, or a few hours.
Who's going to be using it?
If more than person is likely to wear it, then you may want something that's easy to adjust. Similarly, if you have more than one child that likes to be carried in a carrier, then something that can adjust easily for each of them is worth having.
Try before you buy
We'd also suggest trying them on before you buy one. Try lots of different styles so you get a sense of which ones you like and dislike.
You can also go online and see if there is a sling library in your area. These will loan baby carriers to you for a small fee, so you can test several out before making any bigger purchases.
How to Use a Baby Carrier
There are several baby carrier dos and don'ts. The most important is to follow the T.I.C.K.S rule:
Tight – your carrier should be close fitting, and tight enough to hug your baby. This helps keep your baby safe, as loose fabric could allow you child to slide down into the carrier, which can hinder their breathing.
In view at all times – you should be able to always see your baby's face when you glance down.
Close enough to kiss – your baby should be able to move their head freely, but their head should be close enough to your chin for you to kiss them on the head while they are in the carrier.
Keep chin off the chest – this ensures their airways are open and unobstructed. Make sure there is space of at least one finger's width under your baby's chin.
Supported back – your baby's back should be supported by the baby carrier, and stop them from slumping. You can test this by gently pressing your hand on your baby's back – they shouldn't uncurl, or move closer to you.
Best baby carrier FAQs
What are the disadvantages of a baby carrier?
Carrying a baby around on your body can feel rather heavy, particularly after prolonged periods when recovering from childbirth. Just like carrying a heavy backpack, it can lead to shoulder, neck and back pain. You can help combat this by buying a carrier that evenly distributes the weight across your shoulders to help reduce the chance of muscle strain. And remember, it’s not advised for baby to sit in a carrier for hours on end, so it’s important for both of you to not use the carrier for prolonged periods.
Another downside many parents find is that it can get rather hot when carrying your baby during the summer months or in warmer environments. That’s why it’s a good idea to opt for a carrier with breathable fabric to rest against both your body and your little ones.
Should I get a sling, a traditional baby carrier, or a backpack baby carrier?
This really does depend on your lifestyle and your own personal preferences. While baby slings or wraps are often more comfortable to wear on the body, they can be tricky to get the hand of at first, particularly when you’re sleep-deprived; tying the wrap successfully can be very difficult. There are, however, many guides on successful baby-wearing and how to use a baby wrap.
That’s why we’d recommend a carrier for beginners who might not feel so confident about using a wrap with ease. They’re much easier to fasten and adjust as your baby grows but the downside is that they probably won’t be as comfortable against your body.
Is a front or back baby carrier better?
Again this really does depend on what you and your baby find most comfortable. The most important factor you should consider, however, is your baby’s size and age when it comes to which way they’re happy to face.
As a general safety rule, back carriers are only suitable for babies who can support themselves which tends to be around 4 to 6 months. These can last your little one until your child is 3-4 and often look more like rucksacks, allowing them to have a better view of the world around them.
Front carriers are best for newborns and younger babies as they allow baby to remain closer to you. They come in the form of both carriers and wraps and provide a closer bonding experience for you and your little one.
How long can a baby stay in a baby carrier?
Katherine says: "Officially, there are no standardised time limits; however, it is important to take breaks for your baby to have a change in position and to prevent your baby from becoming too warm, especially in hot weather."
"You will need to check your baby’s position and airway frequently to ensure they continue to be well supported. For hip health, carriers are not recommended for extended periods."
When can a baby face forward in a carrier?
It's important that your baby's neck is strong enough to support their head against your movements before you even consider forward facing. You also want to make sure your baby is big enough that their chin is above the top of the carrier.
For these reasons, the consensus is that your baby would need to be somewhere in the region of 4-5 months old at an absolute minimum (some baby carrier manufacturers suggest 6 months as a minimum). But this will vary from one baby to another.
What should a baby wear in a baby carrier?
As well as being wrapped up in the carrier, your baby will also be pressed up against your body, which helps keep them warm. In many cases, dressing them in whatever they wear indoors will be sufficient, to ensure they don't overheat.
If it is cold outside, then a baby carrier cover will help keep them cosy and protected, whatever the weather.
