We’ve all been there—it’s the end of the day, you’re ready for some quiet time with your little one, but the minute you pick up a book, your one-year-old is off crawling around or wiggling away. Sound familiar? Don’t worry! Reading to a one-year-old can be challenging, but it’s one of the best things you can do for their growth and development. So, don’t give up just yet!

Reading to your baby introduces them to new words, helps their language skills grow, and strengthens the bond between you. A study found that children whose parents read them five books a day hear about 1.4 million more words by the time they start kindergarten compared to children who aren't read to at all.

According to infant bonding and communication expert Crystal Miles, “A baby’s brain grows fast in the first three years, making a million new connections every second. Adding a few short books into your daily routine is amazing for your baby’s growth—it helps with language, imagination, intelligence, and builds a strong bond between you and your little one.”

Plus, babies who are read to from around six months old can have 40% more words in their vocabulary by the time they’re 18 months.

It’s never too late to start reading with your baby! Below, we’ve rounded up the best books for one-year-olds, along with tips on how to choose the right ones and build a simple reading routine.

How to make reading fun for a one-year-old

“When choosing books for your one-year-old, go for ones that are short, fun, and tough enough for little hands to handle,” says Crystal. She recommends books with bright pictures, rhymes, or flaps to lift.

“Some great choices include Dear Zoo, the That’s Not My... series, and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes. These kinds of books get babies involved—they can help turn pages, touch the textures, and point at pictures.”

Choosing age-appropriate books with themes your baby loves can make reading time fun and engaging. Here are some ideas:

Bright, bold books

Babies love bright colours and simple pictures. These books hold their attention and help them learn new words.

Sound books

Interactive books with sounds let your little one push buttons and hear noises—just pick a tune you can tolerate!

Interactive books

Touch-and-feel books, flaps, and pull-tabs keep babies entertained while helping with fine motor skills.

Indestructible books

Chew-proof and rip-proof, these are perfect for toddlers still learning how to handle books.

Photo books

Real-life images of trucks, animals, or food help babies connect words with real objects and expand their vocabulary.

Bath books

Waterproof books are perfect for reading during bath time or messy play.

Short stories

It’s normal for toddlers to not finish a whole story. Start with short ones and follow their lead—make it fun, not stressful!

Tips for building a reading routine

  1. Keep books accessible: Store them where your child can reach so they can ask for a story.

  2. Read during quiet moments: Slip in a few minutes of reading before bed, during meals, or even at bath time.

  3. Make it consistent: Just 10-15 minutes a day can make a huge difference!

  4. Create a cosy reading spot: Designate a special chair or area for reading to help your child associate that space with storytime.

  5. Let them choose: Allow your child to pick their favourite book. Repetition is important for their learning.

  6. Cuddle while reading: Hold your baby close for comfort. Engage them by discussing pictures, pointing out animals, and using interactive features.

  7. Stay persistent: If your little one is restless, keep encouraging them to join you. Continue reading even if they wander off—they may come back when they see you enjoying the book!

Why start early?

Reading to babies not only boosts language development but also strengthens your bond. In fact, children who are read to at least three times a week are almost twice as likely to recognise letters by age five.
