How we tested and chose these travel potties
Our Mother&Baby Awards are renowned in the industry for being one of the most highly respected product awards for baby and parenting products, and every year, we arrange for thousands of independent mum reviewers to test the latest products on the market.
Once we’ve recruited our pool of testers, we ask them to consider four areas while testing, including usability, design, quality, and value for money. They also are asked to provide feedback on their experience with the product and whether they would make any changes to improve it.
Find out more about how we test and what considerations we take into account in our testing process.
Our independent mums review products based on their usability, design, quality, and value for money. Reviewers give us qualitative feedback on their experience with the product, which our team of journalists review to decide our recommended products.
From all this work, the best travel potties are chosen and listed below, along with the review comments that we thought would be most useful. We've also selected a number of the best travel potties based on the reviews of people who bought and used them, so you can be confident that you're getting the best options out there.
Our editorial team is also constantly updating our best-of articles and looking for new travel potties to test so that we can help you find the best – be that a cheaper product that we want to test for value for money or the latest models.
The best travel potties and seats 2024
Best overall travel potty
This lightweight and compact portable potty is a great way to make potty training fun, with its cute animal design, which our dad tester Tim said: "is more fun than any other products out there." Our parent testers loved the integrated handle, which made it easy to carry, and parents found that the product is so light that even children can carry it themselves. M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "This travel potty is inspired, as it really engages children with their potty training. My daughter loved this penguin design and was happy to use it on trips out and about; it made it more of an adventure that she was part of, not just a chore that Mummy wanted her to do. It's easy to use, and despite not having a spout, it was easy to empty and straightforward to clean. The button is reassuringly tight to open and close, so there was no worry about leaks. I'd recommend this to anyone potty training on-the-go."
The twist button makes it easy to open in an emergency, but it is difficult for children to open, which one mum felt was a bonus as it avoided accidents; however, another mum tester felt it would be improved by having a lock that children could open to encourage independence.
It's small enough to go under a pushchair for days out, and parents were grateful for the anti-leak feature, which mum tester Emma described as "amazing". The bowl has a splash guard, and you can seal it back up to prevent leaks and nasty odours, which our tester Katie appreciated, saying: "It locks and seals shut so you carry it without any fear of spillage, and the smell doesn’t waft out at all."
Another of our testers, Nicola, liked "the deep bowl; it means it can be used a few times while you're out before it needs emptying."
We tested this travel potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2024, where it won Gold for Best Potty Training Product.

- Lightweight and compact, so it fits under most buggies or can be hung from the handles
- Leak-proof and odour-proof, so no nasty smells
- The colourful animal design makes potty training more fun
- The deep bowl means it can be used a few times before being emptied
Cons
- One mum felt it would be better if children could open the lock
- Integrated handle and a twist button
- Splash guard
- Anti-leak feature
- Deep Bowl
Best adjustable potty
The Potette Plus 2-in-1 can be used at home or on the go. It can stand alone as a travel potty, using liner bags, but it can also be converted to fit on top of a toilet when your little one is ready to move on to the big toilet. Our mum testers liked this versatility, with Rachel saying she liked "how you can use it on normal adult toilets and also use it as a potty when away from loos." The plastic outer shell is easy to wipe clean, and the disposable bags make it easy to dispose of the contents of the potty after it's been used. M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "The Potette Plus is handy as a travel potty as it's so easy to click into place and use, then fold down again. I definitely recommend this travel potty for holidays and days out - it's useful to keep in the car, so it's on hand for any trips or outings. The liners are easy to use - it's just a plastic bag, and you loop the handles around the legs." The bags are an additional cost, so that's something to bear in mind.
Parents liked that it folded down, which made it easy to transport and take out and about, with mum tester Shelley recommending it "because it is easy to fold up and a nice size, which means I am able to pop it into my changing bag."
Folding the legs out and using this as a training seat on the big toilet gives this additional long-lasting usage; Sophie said: "It's great that you can use this as a toilet training seat as well, which is so handy for public loos - it means your little one it's going to plop into the large toilet bowl while they're still training. It's easy to click the legs into place and fold them up again."
We tested this travel potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2017, where it was Shortlisted for the Best Potty Training Product.

Best small potty
This OXO potty is useful for any on-the-go emergencies and, like the Maguari 2-in-1 Potette Plus, it can be both a toilet seat and a travel potty. It fits onto most toilets and comes with disposable bags, absorption pads, and a travel bag. Our mum testers agreed that this versatility was a big selling point, with mum Hannah saying: "This makes potty training easy on the go and at home as it removes confusion as the seat is always the same and makes my little one feel secure as he is learning something new."
It folds up well and is small enough to be easily transported, so it won't take up too much room in your toddler bag; our mum testers liked the hygienic drawstring bag, which made it easier to carry around in their changing bags.
Mum tester Laura felt the grips were particularly useful as they made her children feel more secure. "Other travel toilet seats do not have these and so don't feel as safe when sitting my child on the toilet," she commented.
We tested this travel potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2019, where it was Shortlisted for Best Potty Training Product.

- Travel bag included to keep it hygienic
Cons
- Some reviewers found it tricky to find replacement bags
- Flaps to hold bags in place

Best emptiable potty
This award-winning potty may not technically be a travel potty, but it makes it onto our list for ease of use; the unique pouring spout and handle means you can dispose of the contents easily, which makes it great for travelling and disposal on the go. Our mum tester, Sophie Knight, agreed, saying: "It's very easy to clean too, and lightweight, so OK for carrying when you're out and about. It's not a compact travel potty, but for ease of use, it's great."
There are no seams, joins, or nooks and crannies, so it's easy to clean, and the sturdiness of the larger seat makes it comfortable for growing toddlers; Sophie added: "My daughter used this from nine months old, and it was comfy sitting on this for both pee and poop. It's so easy to use and empty, and we used to pop it inside a bag to carry out if we needed to travel with it despite it not being a travel potty. Would thoroughly recommend."
The updated Pourty Eco Potty was a Silver Award winner in the 2024 Mother&Baby Awards.
We tested this travel potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2014, where it was shortlisted for Best Potty Training Product.

Potette Max
Best potty for travelling
The Potette Max has a unique 3-in-1 design. You can use it as a travel potty with liners, with a hard lining shell that can be emptied and re-used, or with the legs folded flat, as a toilet seat.
The absorbent, biodegradable liners keep mess to a minimum while out and about, and there's a travel bag, too, so you can take it with you on the train, plane, bus, or however you are travelling. The reusable plastic hard liner pops in and out, so you can use it as a normal potty at home. M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "This is an innovation for potty training as it saves you buying three products. It's easy to set up and use and quick for when your little one needs to go - there's never any time to hang around, so it's great that it clicks together quickly. The hard plastic liner makes it easy to transform into a normal potty at home; however, the design means it looks a bit dented from the start. I'm assuming the collapsible design is about saving on postage costs, but once opened out, it doesn't collapse again and looks a bit clumsy. That's really the only downside."
Mums felt the Potette Max made potty training less stressful as it's so convenient and easy to use, with mum tester Sikha saying: "It is one item that can be used as a potty or toilet seat and folds small so is easy to transport." As with the Potette Plus 2-in-1 we reviewed above, mums felt it made the potty training process easier as their children got used to the seat as a potty and could transition to using the seat on the toilet. Mum Emine said her daughter was getting stressed when she had to use different toilets, but with this one, "she got used to it, and she didn’t get any stress while we needed to use some other toilet."
How is this different from the Potette Plus 2-in-1? It's the addition of the hardliner, meaning it can be used as a standard potty at home - the Plus doesn't feature this.
We tested this travel potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2021, where it was Shortlisted for Best Potty Training Product.

Pros
- The reusable liner is removable and easy to clean
- It can be used as a potty at home with the liner, as a travel potty with the bags and liners, and as a toilet seat
- Foldable legs for compactness
Cons
- Design isn't very exciting to toddlers
- People may prefer not to use plastic bags
- Both reusable and disposable liners
- Carry bag included
Best toddler toilet seat
This potty toilet seat features non-slip silicone pads on the underside of the seat, which increase the friction between the toilet cover and the potty-training seat so your potty-training toddler can sit securely on the toilet.
Kids will love the cute little froggy design, and parent reviewers loved that it folds up neatly and comes with a storage bag, which makes it easy to carry. One mum reviewer said: "I was really surprised with just how small it folds down, so it's perfect to just pop in the backpack when we go out." It's also easy to clean; just wipe it with a wet cloth or rinse it with water. M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "This is a simple-to-use training seat that's ideal for travel as it folds up so neatly into a little bag. However, because it folds, this means there are gaps that skin can get caught in - be careful using this and watch how your child sits down, as we've had a few instances of legs getting a little caught in the fold gaps."
While it's not a potty, it's ideal for the later stages when your child wants to sit on the toilet but isn't quite big enough for the seat, or you're out and about and don't want them sitting on public toilet seats; Sophie continued: "It's great for when you're ready to transition from a carry potty to this foldable potty seat for when out and about."
Pros
- Budget-friendly potty-training option
- Fits most toilets so great when out and about
- Available in several fun colours and designs
Cons
- Some say it's not the best for wriggly toddlers
- Not a potty, just a seat
- Non-slip silicone pads
- Folds up
- Wipeable
Best disposable potty
Now for something completely different - a disposable, recyclable, eco-friendly potty. The outer potty is made from cardboard with an inner lining bag to catch and dispose of the pee and poop; there's an absorbent pad inside the bag that soaks up to 250ml of liquid.
You might not think a cardboard potty would be strong enough, but the Tron has been tested to hold up to 30kg of weight, so it can easily hold your toddler. M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "I think this is a great idea, perfect for holidays or days out. The potty folds up really small before use, so you can easily keep one in your bag; it's surprisingly strong, and my daughter sat on it safely while peeing. It's then easy to fold up and dispose of. I will always keep one or two of these in the car while on trips and one in my handbag too."
Parents thought this collapsible, portable, and disposable potty was convenient to have in your bag as an emergency potty if you're not out for long. It would also be great for short journeys, camping, or festivals. Parents liked how small and light it is, making it a better option than some of the bulkier travel potties when travelling. Our mum tester, Karen, felt: "You can really forget that you are carrying it around. It can be a permanent feature in your bag without causing extra bulk, meaning one less thing to pack and one less thing to worry about."
The absorbent, biodegradable pad absorbs liquid and keeps odours at bay, and our mum tester, Julie, thought "the liner pad absorbed the wee really quickly", while the clever closing system and handle make it easy to carry for disposal. Another parent reviewer liked that "it's so compact with a handy handle that you can carry it until you find a bin. After it's been used, you can close it again at the top and carry it easily."
We tested this travel potty as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2020, where it was Shortlisted for Best Potty Training Product.

What is a travel potty?
It does what it says on the tin - a potty for when you're out and about to help support your toddler's potty training.
You can find two main types of travel potty: one that is just a training seat support to place on top of a normal toilet, and the other is a potty.
What to look for in a travel potty or seat
Ease of cleaning - Our number one tip is to choose something that's super easy to clean, whether that's with disposable bags or bowls that can be removed and cleaned out.
Size - Think about how easy the travel potty is to carry around. There's no point in having a fantastic, does-everything travel potty if you can't actually fit it in the boot of your car or a luggage rack. Look for one that is lightweight or even small and foldable.
Comfort - Potties aren't the most comfortable of seats, but you'll want something that your little one will be able to sit on for as long as it takes to do their business. Some travel potties have an ergonomic design or even a backrest, which might appeal to you.
How to use a travel potty or seat
Potty training expert Amanda Jenner gave us her top tips on potty training while travelling out and about with one of the best travel potties...
• Take a potty everywhere - either buy a travel potty or pack up the one you're using at home - don't expect your little one to sit on a public toilet.
• Make sure everyone who looks after your child when they are not at home, for example, nursery teachers, childminders, and grandparents, are informed about your potty training plan and what you expect - communication is key.
• Keep giving your little one reminders when out and about - you might be doing it at home, but try to ask your tot if he/she needs to use the bathroom or the toilet every 20 minutes or so.
• Remember everything is easier at home - when a child feels confident using the potty at home is different to when they feel confident out of the house. Use a reward chart to reinforce positive behaviour.
• Overall, when away from home on a short or long trip, it's essential to stick to your routine and to get support where you can.
