Choosing the right baby playpen can make a world of difference when it comes to keeping your little one safe and secure.
When your baby begins to move independently, you'll soon realise that a simple stair gate might not be enough to prevent them from wandering into a potentially dangerous situation. That's where a well-designed playpen can be a lifesaver, offering not only safety, but also an engaging environment for your baby. Once inside they can play freely and explore. Plus, they're the perfect place to set up a playmat or gym for endless entertainment.
Dr Amanda Gummer, a renowned neuropsychologist, child development specialist, and founder of The Good Play Guide strongly advocates the use of playpens. She explains, “A baby playpen provides a safe, enclosed space where your baby can explore independently, which is crucial for building confidence and fostering early motor skills. Having a designated space for play promotes a sense of routine, which is beneficial for emotional and cognitive development.”

How we choose and tested the best baby playpens
Like all our product recommendations, the best baby playpens are chosen based on a combination of real-world testing from our burgeoning army of mum testers and our experienced editorial team and product specialists. Where we can, we also consult experts who specialise in that field, to ensure you get the right advice along with the right product.
At times when we can’t get our hands on something personally, we’ll select products only from reputable brands, scouring reviews, forums and real parent experience to ensure all products are fit for use and deserve a space in your home.
When selecting the best baby playpens, we considered several key factors to ensure you find a reliable and effective option for your child's playtime. We asked our parents testers to assess how quickly and easily each playpen could be assembled and disassembled, and how easy it is to fold up and store away. Toddlers then used the playpen and parents tested and rated the product across several categories.
Additional factors and features we considered included toys, padded floors, and adjustable sides were examined for their added value. Value for money was determined by the playpen’s features and durability relative to its price. Sturdiness was crucial to ensure the playpen remained strong and stable during active play. Portability was important for those who needed to move or transport the playpen frequently. Safety was a top priority, focusing on how well the playpen keeps your baby secure. We also considered practicality, how well the playpen fits into various home spaces and lifestyles.
The Venture All Stars Joy Baby Playpen stands out as our top choice due to its portability and ease of setup, making it ideal for different living situations. For families with more space, the Venture All Stars Duo Foldaway Playpen is perfect, offering a spacious and permanent play area for larger rooms. The Joie Cheer Playpen delivers the best value for money, featuring excellent add-ons at a reasonable price. It is particularly suitable for smaller spaces with its detachable plush toys that toddlers love.

The best baby playpens in 2024
Best overall baby playpen
The Venture All Stars Joy Baby Playpen is a top choice for parents seeking a spacious and convenient play area for their little ones. Its large design offers ample room for babies to play, and it easily collapses for quick storage, making it perfect for families with limited space. The playpen is durable and wipe-clean, ensuring it can handle even the most energetic playtimes.
If you prefer a more compact model, the Venture All Stars Joy Square playpen is a better option than the hexagon design. It takes up less floor space and fits neatly into a corner of the room, making it easier to tidy up your little one's toys at the end of the day.
Mum tester Breige Swift praises its practicality: "This model is foldable and comes with a handy carry bag, which makes it a viable option for us living in a flat with limited storage." She also appreciates the netted sides, which allow for easy visibility, and the zip-open side panel, which offers additional flexibility. The understated grey colour makes it aesthetically pleasing and suitable for any interior, even though it’s a bit bulky and heavy at 15kg.
However, Breige notes that the base could use more padding, especially if you plan to use the playpen on hard surfaces or outdoors. Despite this, the removable and washable fabric covers provide peace of mind, making sure the playpen stays clean and hygienic.
Breige advises parents to consider purchasing this playpen early to maximise its use: "For parents considering a playpen, I would recommend buying this as early as possible to get the maximum value and use for the investment."
Overall, the Venture All Stars Joy Baby Playpen combines practicality, safety, and ease of use, making it a standout option for creating a secure play space for your baby. This playpen earned the Gold award for Best Safety Product at the Mother&Baby Awards 2023.

Best baby playpen for small spaces

The Joie Cheer Playpen is a versatile and stylish option designed for smaller spaces where safety and comfort are priorities. Its square design is not only practical but also visually appealing, featuring a unique mountainside scene and detachable plush toys that engage your baby. This playpen is ideal for creating a secure environment for playtime and even naptime, making it a valuable addition to any home.
Mum tester Zoe Ward appreciates the playpen's thoughtful features: "The breathable mesh sides are perfect for keeping baby cool, and the zipper allows Aubrey to crawl in and out easily, which is great for both play and supervision. The removable mattress is comfy and doubles as a play surface or napping spot, adding to its versatility."
The playpen folds easily into a compact rectangular tube, making it highly portable. This feature is particularly useful for families who travel frequently or need to store the playpen in tight spaces. The included carry handle further enhances its portability, making it a practical choice for trips to visit family or overnight stays.
Despite its many benefits, the playpen is somewhat heavy when folded, which might make it challenging for some parents to carry. However, its size and features justify the weight, especially if you have a vehicle with adequate storage space. Zoe notes that while the playpen fits well in her car boot, it may be cumbersome for some.
Overall, the Joie Cheer Playpen combines safety, comfort, and a charming design at a reasonable price. Best spacious baby playpen
The Venture All Stars Duo Plastic Playpen is a popular option for parents looking for a spacious and secure area for their little ones. Its size is one of its biggest advantages, offering ample space for babies and toddlers to play safely. Mum tester Jasmine highlighted, “This playpen is fantastic. It's very large, so my toddler can play inside it safely with a lot of her toys in there as well. It’s also a handy place to store her toys at the end of the day, which keeps everything tidy.”
Assembling the playpen is straightforward, thanks to the click-together design of the plastic panels. However, the playpen is best suited for use on hard floors, where the suction cups on the feet can stick securely. Dad tester Ben Clarke shared his experience: “The panels are very light, and if the base isn’t stuck down, a determined little one will be able to move it around the room by pushing."
While the Venture All Stars Duo Playpen is practical for those who plan to keep it up permanently, it’s not ideal for parents who need something more portable. Ben mentioned, “If you don’t have the space to leave the playpen up permanently, this might not be the best fit. It’s too bulky to store away easily, and setting it up multiple times would get monotonous quickly.” He also noted the playpen’s limitations for outdoor use: “We would have liked to use it outside, but the suction cup design of the feet and the fact it doesn’t fold up easily mean this isn’t possible.”
In terms of safety, the playpen is generally secure, but there are some concerns to be aware of. “The activity panel features star-shaped buttons that squeak when you push them. My daughter managed to remove one of the stars, which gave her access to the squeaker inside—a choking hazard,” Ben warned.
"I contacted Venture, who said they hadn’t seen this issue before and immediately sent out a replacement panel. The second panel was completely fine, so I would assume they had a manufacturing fault with the first. Looking at customer reviews online, no one else has reported similar, so I must have been unlucky."
Overall, the Venture All Stars Duo Playpen is a solid choice for parents who have the space to keep it set up permanently. Mum tester Jessica said: "I would definitely recommend this playpen to any parent/carer. My baby automatically goes in as he recognises it as his safe, playing space."
This playpen earned the Bronze award for Best Safety Product at the Mother&Baby Awards 2022.

Best portable baby playpen
This Hadwin Foldable playpen is portable and folds into a compact travel bag, meaning it's great for taking with you on holiday or for playdates. It has a weather-resistant canvas floor, so it's great for use outdoors too. There is no door or gate opening, so you will have to lift your baby in and out - bear this in mind if you've had a C-section and it's still tricky to lift your baby.
We like the mesh sides on this playpen, making it easy to see your child playing; one review said: "My little one has recently started crawling and pulling everything down. I couldn't leave the room but didn't want to put him in a small place in which he couldn't move around much. This playpen is a fantastic size; he has all his toys in there and still has a lot of room to crawl and move around. It is easy to put up and take down, which means you could easily take it with you to a friend's house, to the beach, etc. It folds down to a very small size and is easily carried and put in the car. My baby enjoys being in it; there have been no troubles so far."
The steel frame is very sturdy, but it’s surprisingly simple to set up and collapse; there is also padding on the connections to prevent bumps. You can choose from two sizes: one with six panels or one with eight panels, depending on how much room you have. The eight-panel option is great if you have the room; it provides plenty of room if you have twins, or want to have a friend over for a toddler playdate.

- It has a weather-resistant canvas floor

Best baby playpen with wall fitting
One of the most recognisable and well-loved playpens for years, this BabyDan playpen is functional with an emphasis on safety over style. That doesn't mean it won’t suit everyone’s tastes, however.
It’s a basic design with steel railings, and a padded, washable playmat; one side is a door opening, and the playpen can be attached to the wall or used as a room divider.
It’s not the easiest or quickest to assemble, but that’s down to its serious practicality; one reviewer said: "The pen wasn't particularly easy to assemble. However, this is because it is such a sturdy and safe structure once it is built up that it's understandable that it takes a bit of elbow grease to put it together. The mat has cushioned many a tumble, and it has been through the wash a few times now and come out fine. It's really helpful to be able to pop baby in here to play for a short period just to give us a chance to get on with little jobs. She has also helped with her strength as she is supporting herself by holding the bars as she practices standing up."
This brand has been making safety products for babies and children for more than 75 years, so if you’re looking for peace of mind with a safe playpen, this is the one for you.
Pros
- Very safe and sturdy construction
- The soft playmat is washable
- It can be used as a room divider
Cons
- Not the most stylish playpen
- It takes a while to assemble
Dimensions: | 360 x 3 x 71cm |
Material: | Metal with cushioned playmat |
Foldable: | No |
- Extra-wide door opening
- Includes machine washable playmat
Best baby playpen for travel
SAVE 31%
This playpen is easy to assemble or collapse, making it great for travelling on holiday or simply on playdates to friends’ houses; one parent tester said: "Assembly... or rather 'put up' is extremely easy.. just pull out the bars and lift the cross bars. To pack away, the unit easily pushes together and folds up very small (like a small pram).”
It’s blue, making it different from most other playpens, which are generally grey, but no other colours are available. The floor is water-resistant, meaning it’s a great option if you want to place it outdoors. Like most mesh playpens, there’s a zipped door for the baby to use, and it’s easy to fold up into the travel bag.
The price is on the high side, especially given it doesn’t have any additional features.
Pros
- It's water-resistant, which means it's harder to stain
- Easy to put up and down thanks to the click design
- Mechanisms are hidden away under the padded top to prevent bumps
Cons
- Limited colour choice

Best foldaway baby playpen
A perfect playpen if your house is styled with Scandi decor - it's simple and stylish but also super practical. It is really easy to fold away and store when your baby isn't playing in it or moving the sides into different shapes.
The playpen is available with three colours of connector but with just one style of railings; this playpen stands out from all others we’ve tested as it’s made from wood rather than metal or plastic; one reviewer said: "The playpen is very high quality, the colour is beautiful. It is also really practical because it can be folded up and stowed away or set up elsewhere so super quickly."
The structure is flexible, as you can use it as a room divider instead of a playpen; it’s easy to dismantle, fold up and store - although it takes up more room for storage than most others.
Pros

- It can be used as a room divider

When to start using a baby playpen
You can introduce a playpen once your baby can sit up and move around, typically around 6 to 8 months old. Dr Amanda advises limiting playpen time to short, supervised sessions of 15 to 30 minutes a few times a day. This approach supports independent play while ensuring your baby remains engaged with you and has plenty of opportunities for exploration outside the playpen.
Choosing the right playpen for you
A baby playpen gives your baby a safe place to play, while always under your watchful eye. The self-contained units are usually made from wood, plastic, or metal. Most baby playpens are lightweight, so they can be easily carried around the house and stored.
In order to find the best playpen for you and your baby, the first thing you need to think about is how much floor space you have.
There's no point in buying something that doesn't fit in your front room. Next, look for something with a strong construction, but that is lightweight with foldable features for easy storage or wheels for easy transportation.
Some playpens come with a breathable mesh side, whereas others will have bars. You will need to consider the gap sizes and whether you would prefer that there were no gaps, so your little one can't get their arm or leg stuck.
There's plenty to think about when it comes to both the style and the design too. You may prefer a wooden playpen or a material like metal for aesthetic and durability reasons, or a plastic playpen may be preferable as it's often lighter and easier to move and clean.
Playpen safety
Here are some important things to note about playpen safety to avoid accidents and injury.
• Only buy a playpen with the BS EN 12227:1997, 1999, or 2010 safety mark
• Similar to baby walker safety, never leave children alone and unsupervised in a playpen (even if they're strapped into a bouncer or rocker)
• Keep the playpen clean
• Make sure there are no large items inside the playpen that your baby can step on to and use to climb out
• Never leave a playpen near an open fire or other heat sources
• Don't tie anything across the top of a playpen, as this is a strangulation hazard
• Never leave a playpen near doors or windows that can be opened
• Keep playpens away from any dangling cords or cables
• Make sure that the playpen is in good condition with no holes or broken pieces of wood or plastic
Types of playpens
Traditional wooden baby playpens
This type is usually more spacious and can easily match your décor. They provide plenty of room for your baby to play safely.
Coloured plastic baby playpens
These are eye-catching and fun for babies but are usually large and harder to move from room to room. So make sure you have enough space for them.
Metal structured and fabric-sided baby playpens
These are better for smaller spaces and are very easy to keep clean. These tend to be durable, which is great if you're planning to have more than one child.
Do I need a baby playpen?
As much as you might want to cuddle your baby 24/7, it's pretty much impossible with so many other things to do, and while a baby play gym or mat is great, once your baby starts to move it becomes trickier.
A baby playpen will not only make your life easier but will also give your baby some sense of independence at an early age. To use, simply set up your chosen playpen on a flat floor surface, fill it with toys, and watch them play while you do something else on your hefty to-do list (or maybe just have a coffee).
How to create an engaging and stimulating environment in the playpen
To transform the playpen into a space that fosters learning and development, Dr Amanda advises including a range of age-appropriate toys that encourage exploration. She recommends, “Use soft blocks, sensory balls, and interactive toys that light up or make sounds to keep your baby engaged. Rotating toys regularly will maintain their interest. Incorporating books with bright pictures and various textures can also stimulate your baby's senses and support early language development.”
Dr Amanda also suggests, “Placing a mirror at your baby’s eye level provides entertainment and helps develop self-awareness. Interact with your baby during playpen time by pointing out colours, shapes, and sounds to reinforce learning.”
Potential downsides of using a playpen and how to avoid them
Dr Amanda cautions about the potential downsides of overusing a playpen: “While playpens are useful, excessive use can limit physical activity and reduce interactions with caregivers, which are crucial for development.” To mitigate these risks, she advises that the playpen should be just one part of your baby’s daily routine. “Ensure that your baby engages in varied activities, including tummy time, floor play, and outdoor exploration. Always supervise your baby in the playpen and check that it is free from hazards like loose parts or small objects that could pose a choking risk.” By using the playpen in moderation and balancing it with other forms of play, you can support your baby’s overall growth and development effectively.
How much does a baby playpen cost?
A basic model will set you back about £30, while some of the fancier ones can cost well over £100, depending on the type that you choose.
The average price for a good playpen is about £50-£60.
Important: Avoid buying a used playpen if possible, as several popular baby playpens have been recalled over the years. It's better to buy a new one to keep your baby completely safe or at least research the second-hand model you are buying to make sure that they are still deemed safe for use.
